Sure, there have been plenty of essays about Reagan, the man and his legacy, but the purpose of this one was different. Now if you want to hear useless name dropping listen to Rush’s Monday monologue.

   Peggy gives those of us who love President Reagan a chance to be at the funeral, to overhear the discussions, and to actually take part in the ceremony. I didn’t mind the name dropping, it is an isolated event (over 3 columns).

   Of all the pundits who have written about Reagan since his death she was probably the closest to him. I believe her (I hope temporary) fixation on Reagan’s passing shows that even the best and most articulate of us can lose our perspective at times, especially when it relates to something so near and dear to our hearts. Besides, it was kind of a give-away that she’d be dropping names when she entitled her piece “What I Saw at the Funeral” (IIRC) … and then went ahead and … told us what and who she saw at the funeral. Part 3 wasn’t as strong or as enjoyable as Parts 1 & 2, but of the 30 or so Reagan pieces I’ve read, Noonan’s is among the finest and most heartfelt. Jack Dunphy’s (at NRO) was a delight, as was my main man’s Jay Nordlinger.

    OK, enough rambling from me. Michelle, congrats on your superb blog. Beauty and brains. What a combination.

    It’s not just the name-dropping that bothers me. There is also the way Noonan always has to write about clever remarks that she made, and the appreciative, we-wish-we’d-said-that reaction of everyone who heard her.
