P.C. VS. OLD GLORY
Here’s a quick roundup of stories involving the American flag under attack this holiday weekend:
- A bemused Washington Post reporter attends an American flag-burning protest in Egypt: “The most curious thing about an American flag burning, for an American, is the embarrassingly warm welcome you get here.”
- Boston Red Sox player Keith Foulke was forced to get rid off his baseball cap with an American flag on it. He had added the patch on the hat as a tribute to our troops in Iraq.
- A Virginia speedway banned a driver from flying the American flag, then reversed its decision after race participants threatened a boycott.
- In the Bay Area loony town of Fremont, local officials who didn’t want the American flag to fly alone during the Fourth of July parade surrounded it with flags from 35 other countries. The Boy Scouts pulled out of the parade in protest. And in a bizarre sideshow, the Chinese consulate refused to donate a flag to protest the presence of a Taiwanese flag.
What holiday were we supposed to be celebrating again?
