Heather Mac Donald fan club
If you do not follow the work of Manhattan Institute scholar Heather Mac Donald, shame on you. She is a fearless myth-piercer and intrepid investigative writer who has no patience for p.c. pablum–whether it’s coming from the anti-Patriot Act alarmists, anti-profiling whiners, or anti-police agitators. Her latest article for City Journal eviscerates the open-border Pollyanna fantasy of costless illegal immigration. Read “The Immigrant Gang Plague” here.
An excerpt:
Open-borders apologists dismiss the Hispanic crime threat by observing that black crime rates are even higher. True, but irrelevant: the black population is not growing, whereas Hispanic immigration is reaching virtually every part of the country, sometimes radically changing local demographics. With a felony arrest rate up to triple that of whites, Hispanics can dramatically raise community crime levels.
Many cops and youth workers blame the increase in gang appeal on the disintegration of the Hispanic family. The trends are worsening, especially for U.S.-born Hispanics. In California, 67 percent of children of U.S.-born Hispanic parents lived in an intact family in 1990; by 1999, that number had dropped to 56 percent. The percentage of Hispanic children living with a single mother in California rose from 18 percent in 1990 to 29 percent in 1999. Nationally, single-parent households constituted 25 percent of all Hispanic households with minor children in 1980; by 2000, the proportion had jumped to 34 percent.
The trends in teen parenthoodthe marker of underclass behaviorwill almost certainly affect the crime and gang rate. Hispanics now outrank blacks for teen births; Mexican teens have higher birthrates than Puerto Ricans, previously the most “ghettoized” Hispanic subgroup in terms of welfare use and out-of-wedlock child-rearing. In 2002, there were 83.4 births per 1,000 Hispanic females between ages 15 and 19, compared with 66.6 among blacks, 28.5 among non-Hispanic whites, and 18.3 among Asians. Perhaps these young Hispanic mothers are giving birth as wives? Unlikely. In California, where Latina teens have the highest birthrate of teens in any state, 79 percent of teen births to U.S.-born Latinas in 1999 were to unmarried girls…

Thank GOD for people like you! It’s like this country is on self-destruct if not on auto.
Yours, sincerely,
Ted Frerking
but, but, but isn’t it racist to mention this stuff, even if it’s true?
(sarcasm)
I attended a citizens police academy in the Texas city where I live. The gang unit made a presentation on gang activity in our city. There are 1050 certified gang members. Hispanics gang members are 600+ with about 250+ African American. The rest are white and Oriental. The Hispanic percentages are quite a bit higher than the Hispanic population.
Thank you! I had never heard of or read any of Heather MacDonald’s work so I followed your link and I am impressed. She is very articulate and makes valid arguments.
I will be looking forward to reading more of her work.
See also Victor Davis Hanson’s Mexifornia for a comprehensive analysis of how the Hispanic immigrant community is imploding under the suffocating weight of PC compassion

I’ve been active in this issue for years. I sense the movement is blossoming, but so many don’t know what to do.
These folks are where you can begin.

Good resources, Michelle and Peachy. The ever-opinionated and excitable, but often correct Michael Savage cited the troubling statistic that 30% of FEDERAL prisons population is made up of illegals, and it struck me. So I plan on doing a little number crunching to find out just what that is costing us in tax dollars…but not without first adding in the number of illegals in non-federal prisons and then collecting the TCO, if you will from “bust” to gavel to clink.
Maybe Heather has already done this, which would be terrific.
Speaking of criminals, anyone heard about Sandy Berger, the Clinton National Security Advisor? Watergate II. My dad had Top Security clearance and he couldn’t sneak stuff out without help or some lax security…
I hope I can be that successful in a few years….

I live in a mixed, “gentrifying” part of LA and I see the Mexican families walking down the street, 5 abreast, all pushing at least one baby along…the schoolyards with 100% latin faces…and then I see the demos and numbers like these…it’s very hard not to get the feeling that this city is doomed. What on Earth will it be like in 20 years??
