Berger & a side order of lies
“Inadvertent?” What pure 100 percent FDA-approved B.S.
Instapundit has a good round-up of comments from folks who work with classified documents and are familiar with security procedures at National Archives and other libraries. Jonah Goldberg is getting an avalanche of similar e-mails. John Hinderaker shares his experience doing research at the State Department.
My own aside: Last summer, while doing research at the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, I’ll never forget how scrupulous the staff was with unclassified documents. On my way in, I had to show two forms of identification, store all my bags and backpacks in a locker, relinquish my pen for a library-approved pencil, and submit my notebook for inspection before signing in and entering. On my way out, a staffer inspected every single page of some 100 pages of copied documents that I had made and rifled through my notebook. The young lady was zealous enough that she might have checked my pants…if I hadn’t been five months’ pregnant and pestering her to speed it up so I could waddle to the ladies’ restroom.

Don’t forget, “inadvertent” is Lib-speak for “I got caught”.
Like, “I inadvertently did the intern”??
I really don’t see how one can “accidentally” stuff papers down one’s socks, pants, and briefs. Someone explain that to me, please.
How on earth is stuffing classified documents into your pants and socks (not once, but at least twice) an inadvertent error?
The archive staffers’ marking of documents that later went missing after his later visits really tells all that needs to be told of this story and cements his guilt in my mind.
My question is…what was he trying to either a) hide or b) provide to the Kerry campaign?
But he didn’t inhale…the dox. Like the headline Michelle, great minds think alike. :p I think what is lacking in the press right now is reporting on just what you did here: just how stringent security is in these places. You really have to intend malice to get out with anything. I’m an army brat, my dad had top security clearance (which is lower than the security level of the room Berger King had entered) and it just doesn’t happen by accident.
Tie to that the fact he came back and took the duplicates of some of the documents he picked up on a previous visit, losing those, as well and you have some sort of CYA that HAS to be going on.
For Kerry? For Clinton? For CCP? For his ego? There is a motive here and the motive will get him in hotter water than the felonious deed alone.
Clinton says Berger is just a space cadet… and if that is proven the case, we ALL are lucky to have survived the 90’s.
“Inadvertent” (ha) or not, there is one inescapable fact: John Kerry used Sandy Berger as a consultant for months after the NSA began to be investigated for pilfering classified terrorism documents. This cannot be disputed.
Last night the Kerry campaign said it had only learned of the investigation that day. Unfortunately they didn’t coordinate with Democratic Party hacks on the 9/11 Commission and President Clinton, all of whom said they had known of the investigation for months. So we are either to believe:
1. Clinton and the 9//11 panel Democrats hid this from Kerry; or
2. Kerry knew and possibly got the information from Berger.
If anyone believes (1), please let me be your telemarketer.
Boy, after hearing your description of the hoops you jumped through at the Bancroft Library, maybe it’s time we let a sole-source contract to the American Library Association and let them handle airport security!
I second that for Los Alamos, too! lol
Martin aka Blogbat:
“Clinton says Berger is just a space cadet… and if that is proven the case, we ALL are lucky to have survived the 90’s.”
We may not have survived the 90’s yet. China still has the plans for the W88. N. Korea is stockpiling nukes as we write, and Iran isn’t building long range missiles to make rug deliveries to the West quicker.
Remember when after the first year of the Clinton administration there were still scores of people in the White House handling classified information yet none had undergone a background check or been cleared? I wish I had Lexis-Nexis because some of those articles would be good to help remind people that this started from the very beginning. As is typical I don’t think anyone with any authority to remedy the situation paid attention then either.
Apparently the saga continues.
I hold a higher than TS (Tops Secret) clearance for the USAF and as such am constantly dealing with the regulations dealing with such information. I can not even leave any form of classified material on my desk, and I work in the most secure facility on my base. I am amazed that liberal bureaucrats are releasing the tired battle cry of “this is no big deal.” I have to go through constant checks; before work, after work, during work, how are you handling the classified information. Berger’s act was not an error in judgement; rather an intentional purpose-filled act of deceit. I hope Republicans take a cue from Democrats, by beating this issue into the ground for weeks on end.
“A liberal is someone who sees a 14-year-old performing a live sex act on stage and wonders if she is making the minimum wage.”
Well, I’m sure some idiot will be running up here to defend Sandy Burgler any moment, but in the meantime, what’s funnier?
That another Clinton official get’s caught breaking the law, or….
The idiot Democrats expect us to believe that it was an honest mistake.
Honest mistake is when you accidently close your notebook on a piece of paper (although no outside note books are allowed there). Honest mistake is not stuffing secret documents in your pockets and socks on numerous occasions. Better watch him at the local 7-11, apparently he stuffs all kinds of stuff down his pants without intending to take it and then “forgets” about it.
The crybaby time of leak spin is right up there with “sure I had crack, but the punishment is biased”. When in doubt attack the punishment, not the crime.
No wonder somemany people in this country are so f-ed up.
Watched ‘We Hate America’ (formally ‘Good Morning America’) this morning (the channel was left on from watching the local news) and they were harping not about how Berger stuffed classified documents down his pants and socks but about the timing of this ‘leak’ - 2 days before the 9/11 comission report. Who cares about national security lets all CYA! Disgusted I switched it to FOX.
What do you think would happen if I went to Tiffany’s and ‘inadvertantly’ stuffed some of their merchendise down my pants and socks? I would get five-to-ten (and not at club-fed either).
Quite right, GMAC, Chip. The Republicans need to find the sound bytes that drill over and over the feat Berger had to perform to steal those documents. The public still has no clue (los Al) about what are done with top secret hard drives when not in use and how difficult it is to “lose” them, it is a home run for Republicans to begin educating the public about just how diabolical these sorts of things truly are.
We do know he wasin’t trying to hide the docs since what he had access to were only copies. More likely that he was trying to get that info to someone.
btw, great pic of berger, clinton, cohen, half-bright on my blog c/o michaelsavage.com
Speaking of Bill Cohen, how disgusting is that guy? Every time I see him on T.V. I think $5 trick…
I was once in the U S Army. A Signal Corps friend of mine was denied promotion for 18 months because of two missing documents for which he signed. And these were just SECRET documents. Berger was handling CODEWORD documents. The information stolen supposedly concerned security holes in the U.S.: port security, for instance. Material which would have been very interesting to Al Khaida. Folks, this is not just a Class 1 Felony. This is TREASON. Berger should receive the same penalty as any other spy: life without parole.
This guy is caught stealing national security documents and they send the idiot parade on tv to tell me how minor it really was. I mean, how bad can it be that I took nuclear weapons secrets if they were only copies?
Didn’t this happen at Watergate?
Where’s the big stink now?
Terry McAuliffe and the rest of the DNC hacks could have caught (what do they call Big Macs in Saudi Arabia?) Sandy Berger with five Iranian agents and sarin hidden in his pants and they would still be defending him.
Give us a break, Terence.
That’s how Sandypants got out with the stuff, Michelle, he claimed he was pregnant.
Seriously, Kerry, although too busy to get security breifings from the Administration still had information on which he based his speech slamming the Administration on port security, which those missing documents deal with.
Well, now we know why he didn’t need the security briefing.
He was already getting one.
I heard someone make a comment on the radio yesterday (don’t remember who it was) who said, don’t worry, this is really nothing more than a third rate burglary. I nearly ran off the road I was laughing so hard!
(For you young uns, think Nixon.)
OK, enough is enough, we obviously need to put the world on lockdown until we can straighten this whole mess out. I have a few suggestions to speed up the process:
1. Ship Berger off to Guantanamo Bay for a few months of interrogation.
2. Start beheading terrorists that we have in custody.
3. Blockade the Phillipines, cut off all their communication with the outside world, and round up all their overseas government personel until we win the war and its safe for the kiddies to come out and play again.
4. Go back to executing people convicted of treason.
5. Start putting the hundreds of millions that the GOP has for the campaign to use, ie, beat the Sandy Berger/Kerry didn’t read the reports/Joe Wilson lied issues into the ground.
Keep up the good work Michelle!
I agree, we need to fight the dirty fight. When the enemy wants to fight fair as part of a recognized army (if they can find one) then we’ll fight fair. As soon as they take the gloves off, the gave up their rights to the easy route. They are not even recognized combatants, but insurgents, which are provided no protection under the Geneva convention. I’m not saying we should throw all reserve to the wind (since we do have to win the Propaganda War- something the Soviets forgot about during their go of Afghanistan) but we do need to set some precedents and create some fear deep, abiding fear. I like your idea, Christian, but I might look into another powerful tactic: Execution by firing squad, bullets dipped in pig fat. It’s been tried before and it worked. For all their martyrdom, they know if they die touching a pig, they’re going straight to Hell’s BarBQ. I know, how insensitive. I agree. My sensibilities and my loyalties are only with one side and intend to see that side win.
The problem with Libs is they think War is a game of kickball in school where “everyone has to win or else nobody does”.
I think the Tier 2 Liberals (the sheep) suffer from an as yet undiscovered variety of autism.
I agree with 1, 2 and 4. 60% agreement with a total moron. I’m going to go shoot myself.
Martin, I think he was being a smartass.
When cornered by the truth, accuse the Republicans of over-reacting - Liberal Handbook Section 10.1.1
Jack, if you are refering to my comments, I assure you I am quite serious. It’s high time the gloves come off.
That would then mark one of the only instances a Liberal is compelled to speak the truth.
Christian, I apologize then. I figured anyone I agree with that much must be a smartass. Nuke the pricks.
Why did we ever stop executing people for treason? They should be at the top of the list, just behind pedophiles and rapists.
Gives new meaning to the phrase “classified briefs.”
Good question, Jack. I guess because we wanted to be cool and rotten to the core like they are in Brussels. (But we knew the waffle could not have come out of Belgium by mere chance)
LOL…you all are funny…TY
I am still unable to get past this inadvertant part. I for one ALWAYS know what I stick in my pants and besides he took a leather portfolio out too…What in the world were the guards doing?
“Clinton says Berger is just a space cadet”…..
In Clinton’s admission that Berger is a space cadet, he is also admitting how unserious he was regarding terrorism. Berger was his NSA. Nice. And if Berger is a “space cadet”, which he is, what does it say of Kerry who has had him as an advisor?
The Clintons have a history of loosing/misplacing unflattering files - remember Rose law firm and FBI files - you can bet Berger was their agent in this.
“Clinton says Berger is just a space cadet”…..
Who better for your NSA
If Berger’s a Space Cadet, I’ll bet Kerry wishes he could strap a rocket to his ample posterior and light the fuse…
Clinton probably though they said NASA…
Even now, having just been told it was it was National Security, he’s probably befuddled as to how Sandy wrote and mailed all those checks on time every month. No wonder his desk was such a mess!!!
I heard that Craig Livingston is in charge of security at the National Archives. Apparently another Clinton appointee President Bush just can’t bring himself to can.
As a Ukrainian friend of mine would say, “that ees precisely my point exactly!”
Christian, Martin - right on! I’m tired of fighting by the Marquis’ rules. Can we start with that corpulent commie, Massa Moore?
“…I think he also feels a sense of injustice that after building a reputation as a tireless defender of his country that many Republicans would try to assassinate his character to pursue their own ends.”
I’m just glad I didn’t have breakfast this morning.
Come on folks, I stuff my socks every day! Oh, wait a minute, those are my feet. Sorry. Does anyone think that maybe, just maybe, Mr. Berger assassinated his own character?
Jack Burton,
Nuking the bast**ds does not solve the problem (except for Iran); although those are my sentiments exactly. It would only enrage 1.4 billion poverty-stricken Muslims and cause more jihad worldwide.
How about this approach?
The Saudi Royal family will soon be overthrown/ ousted by internal forces. It is predicted 600,000 troops will be necessary to stabilize the country (read secure the oil infrastructure).
Two problems arise:
1) In light of our position on democracy in Irag, morally the U.S. can no longer support the royals’ regime
2) we don’t have 600,000 troops to spare
But, how smart are we? Only about 5% of our oil is imported from the KSA. The majority of KSA exports go to…the EU, China, Japan and RoK. Combined, they can easily supply 600,000 troops. China has several million, ready for something.
It is in the self-interests of this coalition to secure their oil supply, or millions could starve and the world economy will turn to excrement.
So, let’s have this coalition secure Saudi Arabia, and while we’re at it, quarantine the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. We hold these cities hostage until the terror stops. No more Hajj until the terror stops, plus three years.
After all, this problem is intiated by Islam, and they are responsible for fixing it. The problem today is, that 1.4 billion Muslims can sit on the sidelines, with little or no consequence from the actions of their religious zealots.
We need to send a message to worldwide Islam, short of nukes, and this action might cause the smallest loss of life.
Goeffg for SECDEF!
Brilliant!
