“Shall we finish it off?”

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 22, 2004 06:02 PM

If you haven’t seen the New York Times story posted late this afternoon on the 9/11 report’s account of Flight 93, you are in for another bone-chilling experience. Excerpt:

Of the 33 passengers on the plane who were not hijackers, at least 10, and two crew members, spoke to people on the ground. At least five of the calls included discussion of the World Trade Center. At 9:57, about seven minutes before the end, one of the passengers ended her conversation saying: “Everyone’s running up to first class. I’ve got to go. Bye.”

The report indicates that Mr. Jarrah, at the controls of United 93, did what many airline pilots have fantasized about since the hijackings: tried to maneuver the plane sharply, rolling and pitching, to keep control of the cockpit. It apparently did not work; the plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania.

The report does not clarify whether the hijackers’ goal for Flight 93 was the White House or the Capitol, but indicates that the hijackers tuned a cockpit radio to the frequency of a navigation beacon at National Airport, just across the Potomac River from the capital, erasing any doubt about the region of their intended destination.

At three seconds after 10 a.m., Mr. Jarrah is heard on the cockpit voice recorder saying: “Is that it? Shall we finish it off?”

But another hijacker responds: “No. Not yet. When they all come, we finish it off.”

The voice recorder captured sounds of continued fighting, and Mr. Jarrah pitched the plane up and then down. A passenger is heard to say, “In the cockpit. If we don’t we’ll die!”

Then a passenger yelled “Roll it!” Some aviation experts have speculated that this was a reference to a food cart, being used as a battering ram.

Mr. Jarrah “stopped the violent maneuvers” at 10:01:00, according to the report, and said, “Allah is the greatest! Allah is the greatest!”

Read the whole thing and never forget.

It’s not just the feds though. I think everyone these days is terrified of being sued. We do need to start letting the public know how valuable they are as the front line defense against terrorism, but by the time it makes it through the lawyers, we get brilliant statements like, “ma’am, we know you are 80 and we know they are dentures, but if they can be used against a flight attendant, we will have to keep them. Sorry.”

Why we can’t fully blame the mostly Left-leaning trial lawyers for this environment, they certainly get their points for shutting down the conservative social and political opposition to their agenda.

I think of him and everyone else everytime I cross it – but this country, to honor the memory of those who died, must do much more. We must protect our boarders, we must hunt our enemies down, and we must change the cultures that created men who could do this.

Perhaps Muslims made uncomfortable by the the emphasis on the terrorist’s last words should reflect on the enormity of invoking the Sacred Name in an evil cause, and see to it that their community is first in line to condemn such acts.

One cannot but reflect on the discomfort to millions of Americans on seeing thousands of their fellow citizens murdered by the co-conspirators of the terrorist that uttered those blasphemous last words.

If anything, it is Bush who is not like those Americans. It is Bush that cowered in safety while others answered the call to duty. And it is Bush who exploited the heroism and faith of normal Americans by starting a war unrelated to the attacks of 9/11.

    Kelly,

Amazingly even after the attack on Pearl Harbor people failed to realize that we had been brought into a WORLD WAR. Unfortunately there are still those out there that fail to understand that this has happened again (including the amazing Mr. Kerry who feels the term war is too harsh.)

Was it part of the war on Japan to invade Africa? Your talking points completely deny history and the facts.

The War on Terror involves many fronts, the most prominent of which are:
    – The Economic Homefront – the 9/11 attacks cost the US nearly 1 trillion. The agressive action by the administration turned the recession around (see Alan Greenspan comments 7/21/2004 for confirmation).
    – Afganistan – the agressive action by the administration has liberated millions and disrupted terrorist command and control (see the 9/11 report.)
    – Iraq – the agressive action by the administration has liberated millions and made the US safer (see the 9/11 commission report) as well as caused a vaccuum drawing many terrorists in to fight on our terms rather then on our soil.
    – Reformation of our traditional alliances, trusting those who share our interests rather then those who would rather sell out for their oil vouchers.
    – Continious strengthing of our homeland security.

Oh, and Mr. Kerry’s grandstanding in 1971 following his return – where he lied (knowingly!) and cost the lives of brave Americans is NOT the America I know.

No, Beck, it doesn’t. Primarily because the word ‘hero’ is now used to describe things like getting in and out of ‘Nam in 4 months by stretching and playing the rules around the awarding of medals. It cheapens the word significantly when it is used to describe those who simply went through the motions and performed at minimally acceptable levels.

LA and Rick, don’t try to impress us with military words you just learned at Kerry’s website. Benedict Arnold was a war hero…for awhile. At the end of the day the difference between a war hero and a traitor is where they stand at the end of the war. I think this is common sense to most people, a bit more normal. Otherwise everything you have seemingly done in support of your country was clearly a ruse to win favor and perform your betrayal.

My father too, won the silver and bronze stars. I am named after his best friend who gave his life saving wounded soldiers. But neither my dad nor his best friends family walks around all day telling people what heroes they are. They don’t have to; there is no doubt to dispel.
