What’s the Spanish word for “terrorist”?
Does unfettered illegal immigration from Mexico increased America’s vulnerability to a major terrorist attack on our soil? Or is this argument a red herring cooked up by anti-Latino xenophobes to serve an anti-immigrant agenda, as Virginia Postrel has asserted? Before deciding, consider these recent stories:
Item: Congressman John Culberson (a Republican from Texas) tells the John and Ken show that Middle Eastern men with links to al Qaeda links have been entering the U.S. illegally via the U.S.-Mexico border.
Item: Middle Easterners with possible terrorist ties have been detained after entering the country from Mexico but released for lack of jail space, according to Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz (a Democrat from Texas).
Item: An Iranian man recently convicted of drug trafficking told a former associate that he “may have smuggled two of the hijackers who flew the planes into the towers in New York on September 11, 2001.”
Item: al Qaeda agents are hiding out in Central America.
Item: A suspected al Qaeda agent arrested in April 2004 reveals a scheme to smuggle terrorists across the U.S.-Mexico border.
Lonewacko has some observations on this topic here.
Update: Forgot this item from a news conference by Deputy Attorney General James Comey on suspected al Qaeda “dirty bomb” conspirator Jose Padilla:
Zubaydah’s plan was to use Padilla and his accomplice for Zubaydah’s own operations in the future. But they were so eager, so intent on carrying out an operation in the United States that in March of 2002 he sent them to see Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, even going so far as to write a reference letter to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed about Padilla, giving Padilla and his accomplice money, and urging them to seek out KSM about the dirty bomb plot. Zubaydah separately called Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, told him about the dirty bomb project, and also told him he didn’t think it was practical, but he wanted Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to check it out himself and to evaluate it. He told Khalid Sheikh Mohammed that he was free to use Padilla in his operations in the United States if he wished.
Mohammed did meet with Padilla and his accomplice, and he was, as Zubaydah was, skeptical about the dirty bomb plot. Instead, he suggested to Padilla and his accomplice that they undertake the apartment building operation that had originally been conceived by the now-dead Mohammed Atef, the former military leader of al Qaeda. KSM suggested that they enter the United States by way of Mexico or by way of Puerto Rico, and that once in the country they locate high-rise apartment buildings that had natural gas supplied to all floors, that they rent two apartments in each building, seal those apartments, turn on the gas, and set timers to detonate and destroy the buildings simultaneously at a later time. This was precisely the mission that Padilla and Jafar had trained for, and now Padilla had a new accomplice.

The word you are looking for is:
Unos arenques rojos.
Na, I think what she meant to say was, “Eine rote Fahne”. Avenger, put your cape away, it’s not halloween.
Oh, I know I am just a hateful guy who ruins all the fun for pointing this out, but check out this article:http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2004/2/11/152933.shtml
“Mexicans Chant, ‘Osama, Osama’ at a soccer match with the US”.
Oh, I’m sure I’m racist for citing their actions, which of course were not racist. But wait, what if I am half-hispanic?
Maybe illegal immigration is a way to keep legally immigrated and Patriotic Americans of Mexican decent down, by over saturating the region with third-worlders and preventing assimilations. We report, you decide
I just wanted to say that I have been reading (and enjoying) your work for a while. A liberal friend actually turned me on to you (?!) I was so glad that you were one of the few that investigated the ‘Terror in the Skies’ article. I had an almost identical experience in 1996 on a flight from London to Philly (5 men -not 14), and when I read Ms. Jacobson’s account I felt nauseous. My experience was pre-9/11 so I never even thought about talking to anyone about it –I just thought I was over-reacting after watching that Lindsay Wagner ‘Flight 847′ movie.
Anyway, I have linked you to my site -I hope that is OK.
Have a great night.

From my interview with Tom Tancredo…
http://www.rightwingnews.com/interviews/tancredo.php
Tom Tancredo: There is place (in) Brazil that is referred to as the “Tri-Border Area” — Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. This area is responsible of a huge flow of illegal immigrants into the United States including large numbers of Middle-Easterners. They come into South America, into Brazil, they are kept there for a period time to become a little bit better with the language. Brazil is a country, very eclectic in nature, you cannot look at anybody and say they are Brazilian. You have no idea. They’re black, they’re white, they’re brown, they’re everything. So they’re given Brazillian documents and move them to the United States. We talked to the border patrol not too long ago and they keep numbers on everybody they arrest and their point of origin. For ya know…fifty years the number of people from Brazil coming across has been minimal, but all of a sudden, in the last six months, it has gone off the charts. Well they’re not really Brazilian at all, they’re in fact Middle-Easterners and Asians paying up to $30,000 Mexican cartels operating out of Brazil.
John Hawkins: So you think we have a lot of terrorists coming into the…
Tom Tancredo: Absolutely we do, there are no two ways about it. We have terrorists coming into the country both through our Northern and Southern borders…
But Martin, Mexicans don’t speak German.
Am I missing something, but wouldn’t the problem be even worse with our friends to the north, where border jumping is even easier than from the south? and where we actually have evidence of terrorists trying to sneak through (thankfully and luckily not successfully)?
Not all (or even according to some, most) of all illegal immigrants in this country are hispanic.
That’s a racist assumption, Avenger. But thank you for supplying the fodder
Anybody who wants the border with Mexico to be protected will have to wait for the Republicans to nominate and elect a conservative candidate – instead of a country-club elitist like GWBush.
For Bush, immigration priorities seem to be:
1. Providing cheap labor for business, so businesses can cut costs and increase profits and will give more $$$ in campaign contribtions to GOP and GWBush.
2. Providing cheap labor for his rich country-club buddies (so they can hire cheap gardeners, nannies, etc)
3. Continuting his futile attempt to increase the GOP % of the Hispanic vote by keeping the borders open to illegal immigrants.
As to protecting Americans from terrorism by protecting the border? I suppose Bush might care about this, but if this interferes with items 1-3 above, terrorism is just a risk the GOP is willing to take.
As to things like: The welfare costs of illegal immigrants and their families, the death of the viability of the GOP in the southwest states due to massive increases in Hispanics (who vote 2-1 Democrat over Republicans), increased crime rates, etc….I’d be shocked if Bush even thinks about them. His puppet masters (the rich folks he meets at fundraisers) really don’t care about these issues at all.
Did Berg have the right to be racist before he was decapitated? Did the engineers have a right to be racist before they were mutilated? We have a right to be racist or anything else if we are being attacked. Politically Correct is for politicians, I’m not one.

Well-said, Joel.
Maybe some MEChA member nanny will poison some elite politician’s baby and then they will wake up. Of course, no one wants that, but my point is that it seems they think if its not endangering them in their hallowed halls above the masses, then its not a problem. I think there should be a law which requires officials to live for three weeks somewhere where:
A. That used to be exclusive and the property value has gone to zero
B. They get to hear the wildest music with accordions imaginable at all hours of the night, offset by car alarms
C. They have to have an armed guard to walk down the street
D. There is an environmental meltdown in the works from all the garbage and dilapidation in the works
E. The police are corrupt and want to be everybody’s “friend”
F. They are menaced every time they step outside.
These are all incidents a friend across town here in Dallas, recently related to me.
Maybe we should start writing letters to Vincente Fox, asking him what he would do to help us out if we support his authority in the region… possibly more than the Bush administration is publicly demonstrating right now.
Ediciones legítimas Michelle! (Legitimate issues Michelle)
What is the definition of a Red Herring? Anything mentioned by a conservative that Liberals wish we would just shut up about. Fortunately for us we have freedom of speech. (And so did Annie!)
Actually, a ME terrorist has already been found to have come across the northern border (the LAX millenium bomber) as well as the southern border…
http://www.detnews.com/2004/metro/0401/16/d01-37384.htm
It’s not good, not good at all.
Anybody who wants the border with Mexico to be protected will have to wait for the Republicans to nominate and elect a conservative candidate – instead of a country-club elitist like GWBush.
So who’s the republican who fits this bill exactly? And how do you propose winning these elections with less than 33% of the growing hispanic vote?
Well homi, how about sending home the members of that new voting bloc who are hre illegally and whom the dems are trying to register to vote illegally. Was that mud, you say? Just wait. The dems have done it before, so what will be new?
Better question for Bush should be, “how does a Republican expect to win when he alienates (no pun intended) the conservative base (you know, the 80 million member NRA crowd?). For the Republican leadership the question should be rather classical in its poetry: “To be or not to be, that is the question”. for avenger, that translates to “das ist die Frage” :p
Yes! And what is one of the largest groups of non-Mexicans pouring over the border (and subsequently being released due to lack of jail space?) BraziliansME’s from Lebanon and other ME countries have a sizeablecontingent in Brazil and are issued Brazilian passports, although, of course, false Brazilian passports are also obtained, knowing full well they will be promptly released if caught at the southern border with little scrutiny. We can also thank Mexico for changing the restrictions of obtaining Mexican visas, making it possible for virtually anyone who wants a Mexican tourist visa to get one without the controls or scrutiny the US gives any potential tourist – or potential overstay/unlawful immigrant. They fly in to Mexico City or Tijuana, then make their way to the border to be smuggled in.
Should their heritage or true identity be doscovered – hey, there’s always good ‘ol asylum
And, unfortunately, as long as the general public keeps getting fed the myth from rabid open-borders wackos who procalim there is no border, no human is illegal, the border didn’t cross me, it crossed us, blah, blah blah, that the only ones crossing the border are sweet-faced, hard-working, dear little men who just want a better life, and doe-eyed women hauling their children in for a better education, terrorists are going to get in – and maybe even aided and abetted by the various “samaritan” groups who pass out food, water and drive them to medical care and thumb their noses at the Border Patrol. Nope, no criminals or people who want to do harm to our country here!
Terrorists are just looking for a better life, too.
I’m surprised Dems against illegal Mexican border crossings haven’t decided it’s because George doesn’t want to upset Fox while Mexico is our 3rd largest supplier of imported oil. Our biggest supplier? Nope not Saudi Arabia… CANADA! Go figure (least it’s not France)
Quite right. “‘The border didn’t cross me, it crossed us,’” You know, the more I hear that from the MEChA and La Raza (The Race) crowd, the more I seem to remember something about the Sudetenland… “Our Stormtroopers didn’t cross any borders…the borders were built through the German people”. Ah yes, 1939. Heil Vincente Fox, I guess.
Now as for Mexico needing to worry about terrorists, well, for some reason I can’t think of very many high-priority targets in that third-world country. Now there’s a thought: maybe once they’re done invading LA, the terrorists won’t want to have anything to do with it either
Gilbertson: I always thought the outcome of the War of 1812 was somewhat disadventageous…
I realize I am not the sharpest tool in the shed but I thought the government and the military were charged by our constitution to secure our borders?…someone needs to remind congress and the white house that a nation that doesn’t guard it’s borders is not a nation that will long endure.
May I ask a stupid question?
Why dont we have the jail space?
Over and over and over again for *years* the INS’es excuse is ‘no jail space’. Why dont they build more jail space?
How about we build camps for the illegal aliens who are caught? This is to hold them temporarily before we can ship them home by the most economical means possible (trains or whatever).
And before you rush me with pitchforks and torches with cries of ‘racism’ on your lips I would like to point out that this is **NOT** based on race as in the case of the terrible and racist Japanese Internment Camps of WW2 but based on immigration and legal status. They are being held *legally* because they are in violation of federal immigration laws.
Hm. What’s Spanish for “troll”?
WHAT’S THE SPANISH WORD FOR “TERRORIST”?
Malkin. Oops, sorry. That’s the Spanish word for rascist.
Blogbat: *smiles*… Hadn’t thought of that. Apparently we need some serious work on our Imperialist Pig skills.
WHAT IS SPANISH FOR MORONIC TROLL?
I will give you a hint RM…STFU you moronic troll … Another Robert McClelland pointless attack post… you should learn from Abel I don’t agree with him but at least normally in his posts he tries to come with some form of facts.. While I have yet to see you post anything other then name calling and attacks on Mrs. Malkin. Someone described you as a troll but I think you are more of a troglodyte.
James Kotthoff: Quite right. Naturally, as any thinking person would suspect such common sense was not absent from us in earlier parts of the 19th and 20th centuries- before the PC Police came in vogue as the Left’s “Final Solution” to the question of the Americans.
One poster at the Free Republic (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1173002/posts)
recently cited some relevant examples:
“Well the U.S.Armed Forces were on the Mexican border in 1916, 1921, and 1929:
When General John J. Pershing led his small army into Mexico to find and capture the bandit Pancho Villa, tensions soared between the two countries, making war seem inevitable. On 6 May 1916, the War Department dispatched the National Guard of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico to the border, while Congress passed the National Defense Act of 1916.
At home during 1919 and 1920 Army forces continued the guard on the border of Mexico required by revolutionary disturbances in that country.
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/amh/amh-19.htm
March and April 1929, revolution in Mexico threatened American lives along the border and Brigadier General Frank S. Cocheu set up headquarters at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, to patrol the border, using 18 airplanes in addition to his troops

So I ask, what’s our excuse?
Excellent question! Why is there no jail space? Here are the reasons:
A)Cost
B) Politics. (Economy – if every illegal is detained, and the system actually worked, there would be no illegals to work for miniscule wages and (gasp!) Americans might have to be hired a decent wages.)
C) Under the Clinton administration, the American Bar Association “helped” then-INS write a brand-new policy concerning where illegals would be housed. The ABA worded the policy in such a way that few jails now meet these standards to house illegals. Even though other federal agencies, like the US Marshals, use the exact same facilities, but they go by a slightly different set of standards (not written by the ABA.) Basically, the ABA demands that all illegals in a jail have more rights and provileges than the general population. Most jails cannot accomodate this demand, therefore the jail is disqualified.
