Excellent question! Why is there no jail space? Here are the reasons:

A)Cost

B) Politics. (Economy - if every illegal is detained, and the system actually worked, there would be no illegals to work for miniscule wages and (gasp!) Americans might have to be hired a decent wages.)

C) Under the Clinton administration, the American Bar Association "helped" then-INS write a brand-new policy concerning where illegals would be housed. The ABA worded the policy in such a way that few jails now meet these standards to house illegals. Even though other federal agencies, like the US Marshals, use the exact same facilities, but they go by a slightly different set of standards (not written by the ABA.) Basically, the ABA demands that all illegals in a jail have more rights and provileges than the general population. Most jails cannot accomodate this demand, therefore the jail is disqualified.

;) Canadus Diem!

James Kotthoff: Quite right. Naturally, as any thinking person would suspect such common sense was not absent from us in earlier parts of the 19th and 20th centuries- before the PC Police came in vogue as the Left's "Final Solution" to the question of the Americans.

One poster at the Free Republic (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1173002/posts)
recently cited some relevant examples:

"Well the U.S.Armed Forces were on the Mexican border in 1916, 1921, and 1929:

When General John J. Pershing led his small army into Mexico to find and capture the bandit Pancho Villa, tensions soared between the two countries, making war seem inevitable. On 6 May 1916, the War Department dispatched the National Guard of Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico to the border, while Congress passed the National Defense Act of 1916.

At home during 1919 and 1920 Army forces continued the guard on the border of Mexico required by revolutionary disturbances in that country.

http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/amh/amh-19.htm

March and April 1929, revolution in Mexico threatened American lives along the border and Brigadier General Frank S. Cocheu set up headquarters at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, to patrol the border, using 18 airplanes in addition to his troops

So I ask, what's our excuse?

May I ask a stupid question?

Why dont we have the jail space?

Over and over and over again for *years* the INS'es excuse is 'no jail space'. Why dont they build more jail space?

How about we build camps for the illegal aliens who are caught? This is to hold them temporarily before we can ship them home by the most economical means possible (trains or whatever).

And before you rush me with pitchforks and torches with cries of 'racism' on your lips I would like to point out that this is **NOT** based on race as in the case of the terrible and racist Japanese Internment Camps of WW2 but based on immigration and legal status. They are being held *legally* because they are in violation of federal immigration laws.

I realize I am not the sharpest tool in the shed but I thought the government and the military were charged by our constitution to secure our borders?...someone needs to remind congress and the white house that a nation that doesn't guard it's borders is not a nation that will long endure.

Quite right. "'The border didn't cross me, it crossed us,'" You know, the more I hear that from the MEChA and La Raza (The Race) crowd, the more I seem to remember something about the Sudetenland... "Our Stormtroopers didn't cross any borders...the borders were built through the German people". Ah yes, 1939. Heil Vincente Fox, I guess.

Now as for Mexico needing to worry about terrorists, well, for some reason I can't think of very many high-priority targets in that third-world country. Now there's a thought: maybe once they're done invading LA, the terrorists won't want to have anything to do with it either ;-)
