Baby, you’re no good

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 25, 2004 06:40 AM

Here’s a little piece I did for the New York Post today on the Linda Ronstadt imbroglio.

More blog commentary here and here and here and here.

Plus: Frank. J. deconstructs “Desperado.”

Update: Reader Jack from Queens writes:

About 2 months ago, I was listening to WABC Radio’s Mark Simone, a conservative entertainment industry veteran, interview Linda Ronstadt. WABC probably has the tape and transcript of this.

Ronstadt threw into a discussion of her music and life that she wanted to “impeach Bush,” but what was more interesting was that she said that she had moved her children back from liberal Los Angeles to conservative Tucson (where she grew up) because she didn’t want them exposed to all those drugs in LA. She complained about the conservatives in Tucson, yet, to protect her children, she moved them there. It doesn’t enter this airhead’s mind that everyone else wants their kids to grow up in a decent, respectfull, place as well. It is like Sharon Stone throwing away her guns - while keeping her armed bodyguards and other such liberal hypocrisies.

I read your editorial. I’m in awe. You rock.

So many people just don’t seem to be getting “it”. “It’s” all about free market - If I Don’t Like It I Don’t Buy it.

Let’s take it to one of my favorite subjects - food. I Love Curry. Love love love. However, I suffer terrible from heartburn afterwards, no way around it. So…..I do (did) enjoy LR music in my youth. However, her politics leave a bad flavor in my mouth. I could either endure that lingering flavor or just avoid it. I choose to avoid it. It’s my right.

Back to the Curry. Maybe you get heartburn too, but if the flavor is worth the pain in your mind, more power to ya.

The point is that people paid good money, hard earned money, to listen to her music. They did not pay to hear her give her political views.

Kind of like going to a resturant and ordering something (say Curry Chicken :), waiting patently for it, having the waiter/watress deliver it (looks so good.. you cant wait to taste it.. yumm… ) and then, at the last minute, the chef comes out and spits (or something worse) all over it.

Now your whole evening is ruined.

Should the resturant fire the chef? Should the chef keep his job? After all he was simply using his right of free speech! (he hates curry…)

LR does the right to Free Speech… but not when somebody else is paying for it.

I find it odd that she thinks people go to her show for HER enjoyment.

LR is a washed-out has-been that is using Bush-Bashing as a way to get her self promoted. If you look closely, most of these Bush-Bashers are has-beens trying to get their name out there, and they know the press will pick it up and run with it. Personally, I wouldn’t buy a ticket to watch her get roasted on a spit….

You hit the nail on the head with the charge of self-absorption. These entertainers forget that they are, in essence, prostitutes rather than prophets. People pay money for her to entertain them. She doesn’t understand: “when I go to a concert and find out somebody in the audience is a Republican or fundamental Christian,” she confessed. “It can cloud my enjoyment,” she pouted.” Boo hoo.

I find the quote about “clouding her enjoyment” the most offensive at all. Does this ditz really think people pay money to attend concerts that exist for her enjoyment rather than theirs? Sheesh.

Sounds like good advice to me. Now if Linda would only follow it herself, she might avoid making a fool of herself. Again.

These “Artists” need to be aware of one thing..they have the right of freedom of expression but the rest of us have the right of freedom of choice… Don’t open your flytrap unless you are ready for the results
The string of entertainers (And I use this term loosely) crying boohoo after opening their mouths is staggering … Janine Garaflo opens her mouth and looses a sitcom, Whoopie Goldberg opens her mouth and looses a Slimfast endorsement … Yet in every case thay cry that their freedom of speech is being supressed.
To all you singers, actors and other celebrities remember while you have a right of free speach the public (you know those little people who shell out money to support your lifestyle) have freedom of choice on where to spend their money. And if you do or say something that upsets them enough don’t be surprised if the money tap turns off.
MB I am not sure what your comment is supposed to mean but I seriously doubt I would go to Kid Rock for any advice let alone political advice.

Linda Ronstadt changes her name to
    Bertha Ledbetter…..

Well, actually I did that for her. There’s just no way I’m going to give up listening to Ronstadt songs like Lo Siento Mi Vida, Perfidia, Blue Bayou, Frenisi and others-especially when I paid a buck apiece to download them just a few months ago.

So I’ve edited her name in all my ITunes files to read Bertha Ledbetter. Messy, but at least I can listen to them.

You may not think that makes any difference but it’s the only way, after her stupid mushy, gushy tributes to that subversive slimea.. Michael Moore.

Change Moore’s name to Zamarippa de Whipple Nipple and go see Fakenhate 9/11?

Don’t even think about it. The s.o.b. can’t even make an honest “documentary”, let alone sing Desperado.

The problem with the antics of LR and other celebrities is that they alienate alot of people who may otherwise support the democrats.

If I go to a concert, I go to listen to music and be entertained, not to listen to a political diatribe.

If LR wants freedom of speech, than let her start her own web site, with her own money, than she can make her own little tribute to the petty little lying basterd, and I can use my freedom of choice not to visit it.

What didn’t enter into her mind is that the LA area is what it is because of it’s politics…. and Tuscon is what IT is for the same reason.

If she ever gets to the point of really understanding that relationship, it’ll drive her over the edge that she ever considered Jerry Brown good for anything.

In the 70’s, during an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Ms. Ronstadt stated that she could sing the best when she shot heroin into both arms right before going on stage. Obviously she still thinks it works. As for moving back to Tuscon, even if her brother isn’t still the Chief of Police, he has enough influence to keep the family junkie out of too much trouble.

She infuriated me so by her comment: “This is an election year, and I think we’re in desperate trouble and it’s time for people to speak up and not pipe down. It’s a real conflict for me when I go to a concert and find out somebody in the audience is a Republican or fundamental Christian. It can cloud my enjoyment. I’d rather not know.”

Here was my own reaction, taken from my LJ (edited for expletives):

Yeah, I think so, too, which is why I’m going to keep speaking up about my Republican, Christian views. Why should everyone else pipe down while you say whatever you want? You think I want to watch a movie or go to a concert while I know your views? Dont’ you think it ruins my enjoyment? I can’t think of Strider as Strider anymore; He’s just the jerk that wants the world to be run by the UN. And then whiners like Sean Penn start complaining about low audience attendance like it’s a conspiracy against them or something. What do you expect? I dont’ have to watch your stupid movies or go to your dumb concerts. And I’m sure as hell not going to feel sorry for you and your “clouded enjoyment” when you obviously don’t give a two penny care about mine.

As one of those Tucson conservatives, I must say that she’s not getting the most out of the conservative setting unless her kids are being privately tutored. There’s just as much drugs and screaming liberals here as there are anywhere else, even moreso due to our high immigrant (aka illegal) population. They clutter the sidewalks holding signs during election time, so I parade around holding Michael Savage or Ann Coulter under my arm or fling rocks at them if I’m in a moving vehicle…

The goober’s name has been mentioned in this blog 30+ times and certainly that is representative of other blogs, online news and search engines. She manipulated the media into giving coverage time to someone that did not even still have the prestigious title of “Has Been”.
