Teresa helped write the speech

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 29, 2004 10:10 PM

From John Kerry’s convention speech: “What does it mean when twenty five percent of the children in Harlem have asthma because of air pollution?”

Answer: It means Kerry is peddling junk science at the behest of his meddling wife. As science journalist Mike Fumento has noted,

Since 1970, the total national emissions of the six principal pollutants the Environmental Protection Agency tracks have been cut 48 percent, even as energy consumption increased 42 percent and the population increased 38 percent.

[Particulate matter] emissions have only been tracked since 1993, but by 2002 had fallen 17 percent. In terms of air quality, they have only been measured since 1998 but by 2003 had dropped eight percent…even as dirty air levels plummeted, asthma incidence from 1980 to 1999 increased by 83 percent according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The scare-mongering about asthma in Harlem comes straight from Teresa’s playbook. She recently gave environmental activist Peggy Shepard, who has made a name for herself hyping the asthma epidemic, the $250,000 Heinz Award for her “brave voice” and “courageous advocacy” against “environmental racism.”

A hint of Hillaryism to come? Yes, well, she has earned her right to be o-PIN-knee-o-nay-ted.

Update: Greg at Begging to Differ was listening closely and has audio evidence that Kerry was talking about hair pollution, not air pollution. Writes Greg: “Maybe John Edwards should lay off the Aqua Net.” Tee-hee!

Update II: More on the asthma/air pollution lie from Mike Fumento here. And for more on the real culprit that explains asthma increases, see the EPA website and National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences fact sheet, which reports:

Recent studies have found a strong association between the presence of cockroaches and increases in the severity of asthma symptoms in individuals who are sensitive to cockroach allergens.

And there is something unseemly about the way she spends money earned by a Republican on leftist causes. She has more of a duty to Senator Heinz–a moral obligation, at least, not to work against his memory, if not honor it.

OK, granted it’s demagoguery on the kids with asthma meme. If not pollutants, and I gotta figure NYC’s a little dirtier than a few other other cities, what is accounting for the increase in asthma cases in Harlem? Is it simply better intervention? Better access to clinics and such? Parents getting their kids to specialists for proper diagnosis? Could be these are the natural rates of asthma but are only now being fully understood because kids have better access to health care clinics, etc. Need some talking points on this one. I’m sure it has something to do with junk food. wink, wink. Remember, it’s all about the trial lawyers, stupid.

Kerry lost the election with his speech tonight. It was petty, vindictive, disrespectful of his opponent, socialistic and pretending to a defense strength that its listeners are disapproving of.

His petty and disrespectful attacks on GWB (irrational and unsystematic; dependent on religion as a substitute for reason; a liar who has diminished America’s standing abroad, etc.) is not a substitute for his total lack of war time policy. Waiting for terrorists to strike and inflict mass casualties with nuclear and biochemical weapons is NOT sound defense policy.

Absent a defense policy that keeps us safe, no domestic policy is assured.

Kerry must think we are fools.

It’s almost a violent affair: John wraps one of those alien-like, hyper-extended arms around her and she kind of clanks into place like a Shaquille O’Neal free-throw. She inevitably then looks up at him as if to say, “Please, my dear, you’re crushing my Luckys,” to which he invariably responds by planting a big wet one, not on her lips, but smack-dab in the center of her face. It reminds me of the scene in European Vacation when the Griswolds are on the Pig-‘n-a-Poke game show and the host, in a manner reminiscent of Family Feud’s ever-lecherous Richard Dawson, grabs Clark’s wife Ellen, tips her backwards and kisses her tonsils. Does anyone else find the “Asthma in Harlem” line stunningly weird, disingenuous or even racist?

Much of the air pollution found in the Northeast comes from a) automobile emissions and b) energy generating stations in the Midwest. These are surely regional problems and not in any way specific to Harlem. Indeed, I cannot think of any manufacturing plants (or at least any smokestacks) located in Harlem (there are some across the river on the Jersey side but they are mostly south of Harlem and very few if any have noticeable emissions).

To the extent that air pollution affects asthma rates, it will affect Americans of all races. So why the focus on Harlem unless Kerry is simply feeding red meat to the race hustlers and environmental conspiracy wackos? (Talk about “Uniting the Nation” notwithstanding)

Oh, right, the Republicans must have invented an air pollution concentration and focusing ray that directs all of the regional pollution into Harlem. Surely, they came up with the idea “at six in the morning” when they were “trying to figure out which minority they are going to screw today” – quoting Michael Moore.

While Im sure that John Kerry’s pollution claims are a crock, I think even Michael Fumento would not answer speculation about a Harlem asthma rate/pollution connection with national figures. That’s just common sense. It’s quite possible that there is a contamination or pollution problem in Harlem & its surroundings that would not show up in national rates of decresing particulate matter. The issue ahould be studied rationally, not used as campaign propaganda by Kerry (who would, no doubt, forget about the Harlem children once elected.)

The cockroach connection is worthy of study. Some slum dwellers live in dreadful investation conditions, with the roaches crawling into the ears of sleeping children. I imagine the health implications are vast.

Gail, Go to http://www.wintersoldier.com for the scoop on his Congressional Testamony back in 72. Yes I know that ‘That was then and this is now’ but hey, John Kerry is reporting for duty!

    Note the following:

    1) Kerry’s testamony before Congress was based upon the ‘Winter Soldier Investigation’ which was held in Detroit.

    2) The ‘Winter Soldier Investigation’ was put on by Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) – of which John Kerry was one of the leaders (along with Jane Fonda).

    3) As a result of the testimony there was an Investigation. The results were startling:

    A) VVAW told its members and the people who testified in Detroit *not* to cooperate in the investigation (i.e. to keep their mouths shut)

    B) Some ‘Vets’ who testified were either never stationed in Vietnam, were never stationed close to where they said they were. None of the witnesses were willing to sign a deposition. “Executive secretary [of VVAW] Al Hubbard claimed to have been an Air Force captain wounded piloting a transport over Da Nang in 1966. Hubbard was actually a staff sergeant who was never assigned to Vietnam.”

    C) Some of the people who were documented as testifying have said that they had never been to Detriot and/or have never testified. (i.e. some of the ‘witnesses’ were Imposters).

(You can draw your own conclusion…)

Most logical people (not Clif or LA) can then make the logical deduction that there MUST be another reason for the increase in athsma.

Cockroaches COULD be one explanation. It also could be something else. But for John Kerry in his speech to claim that the increase in Athsma is due to (h)air polution, seems to me and Michelle that there is junk science going on (once again) by liberals.

Just like the thought about CFC’s causing the Ozone hole. Then we find out that Mount Pinatubo’s eruption put up more CFC’s in the air than the world has ever made and there was only a temporary reduction in the ozone of 6% that year. Every year the ozone hole (over Antartica) grows and shrinks to the tune of up to 40% (not of the earth but of it’s original size). It is impossible for the ozone layer to deplete because the sun’s rays (UVA and UVB to be exact) create ozone in that layer of the atmosphere. The more the ozone layer is depleted, the more those rays are able to penetrate and make more ozone. It’s mother nature taking care of itself and it is an inability for humans to destroy that process unless we destroy the sun.

But Liberal leaders will still create the alarmist rhetoric and the liberal rank and file will believe their rhetoric.

But the reason why this is a 53/47 nation now is that there is a way for people to hear the other side of the story now. And that makes liberals like LA crazy because he can’t stand it that Michelle would be out there talking to us. The crazier liberals get the more of a landslide the next few elections will be.

LA, I’ll answer your false premise of a question after I ask you… Why do you judge incorrectly so much? You seem to be clouded with hate. Do you hate the people you judge so incorrectly?

Now I don’t know why but I’ll entertain your false premise of a question (which came about because you judged a story incorrectly…

First, here is the paragraph in Mrs. Bush’s speech that referenced Doctors points of views about reading and how helpful it is and how one doctor expressed the opinion that it was helpful in cases of athsma to which she found out (the doctor did) that the mother couldn’t read. I recommend everyone go to the link that LA posted (I’ll post again … http://www.georgewbush.com/News/Read.aspx?ID=2794 )

    Here is the 2 paragraphs

Pediatricians who prescribe reading are not just helping children learn to love books and reading, but they’re helping parents as well. Dr. Donna Bacchi, a pediatrician at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, started a reading program there in her practice. And she told me that she just thought she would practice the very first prescription. So she had a little patient who came in with asthma. So she talked with the boy’s mother about the importance of reading to them and she showed the mother how to hold the baby and the book. And then after a few minutes, the mom whispered in Dr. Bacchi’s ear, Doctor, I can’t.

Fortunately, Dr. Bacchi was prepared. She knew a literacy provider in the little rural town this woman was from in West Texas, and so she was able to let that woman go to this literacy provider so she could learn to read stories to her child, and she could also read the labels on her child’s asthma medication. What an extraordinary opportunity to end illiteracy for one family and to enrich their lives with reading.

Wow. The doctor found that the mother could’t read the label on the athsma prescription bottles after talking about reading to her. Now people like LA who have so much hate that they have clouded brains make judgements about Laura Bush instead of the DOCTOR that Laura Bush was quoting.

    So. LA’s question was…
I’m curious about your views on Laura Bush’s “books cure asthma” initiative. Could you point me in the right direction?

    My answer…
The initiative is called “Reach out and Read” LA, not “books cure athsma”. In the broad sense that Mrs. Bush (who you show disrespect for) talked about reading helping kids’ brains develop better and many other ideas she mentioned a story from one doctor who found that a mother couldn’t read and how that came about.

Everyone here can see how badly you twist things. From your comments about Michelle slamming blacks to your comments about Mrs. Bush. What do you want from us? To see things your way?

Remember I have some questions at the top of this post for you….

    Thanks for the post GsOuPx,

Interesting how your posting name spells GOP sux.

Did you notice in your post the following sentence, “Low-income housing is typically in poor repair and infested with cockroaches, rats, and mice, all of which can generate allergens that may exacerbate asthma.”?

And if the air quality has been increased in the past decade doesn’t it point to other factors besides air quality in general?

Here is another possibility in your post was… “Another possible factor is that an unusually high proportion of cohabiting adults may be smokers. “We did a survey about a decade ago showing that the prevalence of smoking in Harlem was about 44%,” said Dr. Northridge”

Seems to me that for John Kerry to KNOW that it’s the environment that the federal government should be doing something about with our tax dollars IGNORES the fact that there IS evidence that shows it COULD be something else which includes PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

The farther we get away from personal responsibility the worse of we are as a nation or in the specific community that is being referenced.

    This is what Kerry said:

“What does it mean when 25 percent of our children in Harlem have asthma because of air pollution? We can do better. America can do better. And help is on the way.”

    Deconstruct the sentence.

“25% of our children in Harlem”

    “have asthma”

    “because of air pollution”

    All in context now….

“25% of our children in Harlem have athsma because of air pollution”.

GOPsux’s question – Feel free to point out where Kerry blamed any one factor for the athsma outbreak.

My answer – How do I point out something that you couldn’t see when you wrote it yourself? How is it not clear? John Kerry knew it was because of air pollution. He didn’t mention the cockroaches or smoking which was in the research that you yourself posted earlier.

I’m thinking that you are really against Kerry because you make it so easy.

If all you’re talking about is holding things in and being more “PC” about particular topics, well, you’re not gonna change anything dancing around the important topics. LA is a nihilist perception moron. Without being consciously aware of it, these people remake reality moment to moment. You can completely box them in rhetorically, and they will tell themselves (and then believe) that your argument never existed. Inconvenient facts get filtered out or hidden behind barriers to objective perception. Because of this, they talk at you, not to you.

This is because they are limbic system dominated, i.e., reptilian. Everything revolves around primitive considerations, territoriality, herding, fear, agression, in-group/out-group identification, etc.

LA’s problem with the facts is that they are being uttered by people who are not in his herd. So he/she struts, preens, squawks, postures, and expands a reddened throat pouch, while making gutteral sounds in order to mark territory, like some hissing lizard on a beach.

Like I said, they’re completely unaware of all this, and the perception filtering takes place mostly sub-consciously. So you hold up an undistorted mirror like this to them, and they’ll forget all about it in a few minutes.

The point is that things like smoke, cockroach droppings and living in filth are self induced air pollution, and not attributable to any political party.
