The wife of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons faces drug and motor vehicle charges after police said she was driving erratically and ignored the flashing lights of a cruiser for nearly two miles. Kimora Lee Simmons was arrested just after midnight Monday outside the couple’s estate in Saddle River…Simmons, 29, was charged with eluding an officer, possessing marijuana, careless driving and operating a vehicle while possessing a drug.
Who’s fault is it?
She denied any wrongdoing, said her lawyer, Stacey Richman. “It’s our perception that this is just another example of a prominent member of the hip-hop community being made an example of. The Simmons family is extremely involved in their community and this is an attempt to denigrate Kimora’s good name and that of her family,” Richman said.

And Americans used to be proud of that. After WWII we didn’t spit on our own soldiers because we all felt like they had done something good for the world. Fighting along side our allies, many of whom exhibited colossal bravery in the fight against German expansion.
We respected the Europeans and they respected us.
But somewhere in the intervening decades since then, that respect was lost. It is not the sole responsibility of the US to bring it back.
Europe has to do something worth respecting as well. And it has been a long time since I have seen any European country with any balls at all.

My impression, LA, is that Michelle is not “slamming black folks,” but pointing out the current tendency toward overcompensation and double standards.
Nobody (here) is disputing the fact that all men were created equal. But some people have become overly sensitive, such that they don’t dare to even criticize a member of a minority for fear of being labeled “racist” or “intolerant.” And when such criticism is made - as, for instance, calling a wealthy pop star “materialistic” - there is often someone to jump up and insist that the criticism is because of race. And then the focus isn’t on whether or not it’s true, it’s on why it was made - and if the motive for making the criticism can be placed in a dubious light, then the criticism itself must be discarded.
It is as if having a different skin color means you must be judged by a different set of criteria … but isn’t that what racism is all about?

She said: “Pediatricians know that reading to children is the best medicine for their cognitive and language development.” (I may not have a medical degree, but I’m fairly sure that asthma is not some sort of cognitive disease.) During that little story about the sick child, no claim was made that teaching the mother to read would suddenly cure the child - merely that it would enable her to read the directions on the child’s medicine bottle.
You’re not doing yourself any favors by making such easily refutable claims. How can you expect anyone to take you seriously?

The fact is, Mrs. Simmons was driving erratically, evaded police and was in possession of marijuana. She can complain about racism until she turns blue in the face, but the color of her skin doesn’t change the circumstances of her arrest or the charges brought against her. I find it very hard to believe that, unlike the cops of South Park, the arresting officers in this case went out of their way to harrass a law-abiding citizen.

As Republicans (teh best Party ever!), I think that we should take the high ground (pardon the pun) and offer an olive branch to Mrs. Simmons. After all, our own first lady (teh best first lady ever!), Laura Bush, has had her own driving problems. Of course, she wasn’t on drugs when she ran that stop sign and killed that guy - and we could prove that, too - if the official report and trial transcripts hadn’t gotten lost.
Of course, some people say that President bush (teh best President ever!) has had his problems with drugs and alcohol, but that’s a lie! People only think that because he kept ducking his National Guard physical in ‘73 - the same year the NG started testing for drugs. I’m sure the real reason President Bush ducked his physical was because he didn’t want some Army doctor grabbing his “boys” and asking him to turn his head and cough.
