THE MALKIN MEDIA DIVERSITY TEST
My new column is up. It’s on the “UNITY Journalists of Color” convention being held this week in Washington, D.C. Both President Bush and Sen. John Kerry plan to make appearances, where they will try to out-P.C. each other in gag-worthy fashion.
I cooked up a little quiz for all these skin-deep diversity types and have invited my fellow “journalists of color” to show us their true colors. Feel free to send the test to your favorite mainstream media journalists and ask them for their scores. Test-takers get five points for every statement they mark “YES:”
1. I have never voted for a Democrat in my life.
2. I think my taxes are too high.
3. I supported Bill Clinton’s impeachment.
4. I voted for President Bush in 2000.
5. I am a gun owner.
6. I support school voucher programs.
7. I oppose condom distribution in public schools.
8. I oppose bilingual education.
9. I oppose gay marriage.
10. I want Social Security privatized.
11. I believe racial profiling at airports is common sense.
12. I shop at Wal-Mart.
13. I enjoy talk radio.
14. I am annoyed when news editors substitute the phrase “undocumented person” for “illegal alien.”
15. I do not believe the phrase “a chink in the armor” is offensive.
16. I eat meat.
17. I believe O.J. Simpson was guilty.
18. I cheered when I learned that Saddam Hussein had been captured.
19. I cry when I hear “Proud to be an American” by Lee Greenwood.
20. I don’t believe the New York Times.
My score: 100. Natch!
Color me culturally and ideologically diverse.
Update: The Washington Post reports on UNITY here.

[Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are COMMENTATORS you dolt.]
ROFLMAO…ALL reporters are news commentators, you dolt. Ask Alexander Hamilton.
[The fact that you think the mainstream media is anything other than largely liberal tells me exactly where you are coming from politically GOPsucs, and it ain't no Libertarian.]
The media is almost wholly owned by seven corporations in this nation. NewsCorp, GE, Disney, Time-Warner, Bertelsman, Viacom and, the newest entrant, Vivendi – all are run by flaming Liberals, correct?
Pop Quiz:
Which newspaper called Bill Clinton more corrupt than Richard Nixon? I’ll give you a hint: It’s the same paper which broke the faux scandal, Whitewater.
The Liberal Media is a myth. It’s the both the first big lie and the first step in controlling the information that you receive. Congratulations, you passed.
[Ahh, so it only matters what he lied about, not the fact that he lied, under oath, in front of a Federal Grand Jury.]
I don’t believe that he lied under oath to the grand jury. I do believe that he may have lied under oath in the Jones case [it's hard to tell given the convoluted definition of "sex" that Jones' lawyers sprung on him] and I do believe that Judge Webber-Wright handled it correctly in that he was summarily held in civil contempt of court for violating the judge’s discovery orders, fined and disbarred. If he did lie under oath in the Jones case, I do not believe that it reached the level necessary for a charge of perjury. If it had, I am sure that Webber-Wright would have so found. She put herself into a judicial Catch-22 when she excluded the Lewinsky evidence from discovery. So, while you could make the point that he avoided a perjury charge on a technicality, I’d counter that the law is technical and should be treated as such.
Back to whether he did lie or not, I am hard pressed for a logical explanation as to why he would admit to having had sex with Gennifer Flowers under that defintion but not Monica Lewinsky. That’s why I believe that he thought the defintion was so tortured that he believed that he was telling the truth or, at the least, not lying.
[Try and tie us up with procedure and dry vocabulary....we'll be out defeating our real enemy.]
Which would be what…truth?
1. Nice blog. good luck with it I really do hope you can see your way clear to leaving cooments open. Too bad about the stupid people.
2. I always describe myself as centrist and this helps me see why; I scored 10 out of 20 on your quiz. Frankly, I can’t see why not shopping at Wal-Mart (I live in Manhattan, where Wal-Mart fears to tread) or not liking Fats Limbaugh and his ilk (just too stupid, innit?) should offset substantive points of agreement like support of school vouchers and racial profiling at airports or opposition to bilingual education and silly PC speech constraints. These items were not all born equal. But great fun and keep the cyberwaves open.
Since the subject was raised concerning allowing/disallowing comments on the blog. Limiting debate, closing threads etc etc etc have always dramatically reduced the number of hits that a site gets.
Something to keep in mind.
Okay, I’ve thought about this for a while, and I’ve reached the conclusion that I have one thing I must admit: I once gave another man a blow-job, but only after some serious drinking followed by heavy petting. He refused to give me the courtesy of a reach-around while I took it from behind because, as he put it, “You’re hung like a coctail wiener.” My self-hate has lead me into the Republican Party, can I heal?
If any guys would like to come over to help me cope, I’d appreciate it and make it worth your while.
I definitely believe in the right to own guns. I just don’t one because I have no interest in guns and I don’t hunt (but I definitely eat meat).
GOPsucs –
If you don’t even know the difference between opinionated journalism and news reporting, you’re more of an idiot than I originally thought.
Limbaugh and Hannity do not pretend to be unbiased, like your buddy Dan Rather, or Jennings or Brokaw or Mike Wallace, or Howell Raines, or Chris Matthews, etc. Face it, most journalists are libs cuz that’s what little junior libs go to study in college. I don’t care if 100% of them were liberal, as long as they could just report the news. But they don’t. They “color” it. They inject their personal feelings into it and have been doing so for about 30 odd years. What’s the consequence? Talk radio that provides a refreshingly different point of view is widely successful. A cable network that just reports the news instead of coloring it, becomes more dominate than it’s competitors, even though it is offered in fewer markets.
Yes, the media establishment is liberal. There is no denying that. But the tide is a changing. I hope you enjoyed your dominance.
[If you don't even know the difference between opinionated journalism and news reporting, you're more of an idiot than I originally thought.]
You’re making the most incorrect, yet most common, assumption about the media and that is that they are objective. I hate to tell you this, Virginia, but there is no such thing as objective journalism…never was. All reporting is commentary. Always has been…always will be. Maybe you’ve bought that bushel of rotten clams. It doesn;’t mean that I have to.
[like your buddy Dan Rather, or Jennings or Brokaw or Mike Wallace, or Howell Raines, or Chris Matthews,]
I dopn’t klnow them so they are not my buddies. Nor are they my source for news and information.
Howell Raines?
[Face it, most journalists are libs cuz that's what little junior libs go to study in college. ]
Do your parents know that you use the computer?
[Okay, I've thought about this for a while, and I've reached the conclusion that I have one thing I must admit..]
Not my commentary.
Here kitty, kitty…
60 Points.
1. No. twice,I think.
2. Yes, way too high.
3. Yes, for lying under oath in a US court.
4. Yes.
5. Yes.
6. No. If you give private schools ‘public money’ the government will eventually control private schools. I would privatize all schools (and universities).
7. No. Privatize all schools, and let each one decide. Why does the government (federal or local) have to have a say?
8. See #7
9. No. To say that gay marriage will lead to pedophile marriage or marriage to animals is a non sequitor. Children and animals are not able to consent to contracts. (This would go for a brain dead invalid or an extremely retarded individual as well.)
10. No, eliminate it.
11. Yes
12. I have, but I don’t regularily.
13. Yes. Good entertainment.
14. Yes.
15. Yes.
16. Yes.
17. Yes.
18. Yes.
19. No.
20. Yes.
Chris,
Target is a French Company? Are you sure?? If so, my Target days are over.
Guess I need to look into this. I refuse to buy anything that I know, is French. My makeup lines have changed radically—and I am very happy!!!
Michelle,
Please keep your comments line open. Is there anyway to filter these trolls? They represent such a small part of your crowd.
We can’t let them win by having you shut down the comments.
Americans have always fought against bullies. That’s what we have here–a few nasty bullies. There must be something you can do!?!
[Target is a French Company? Are you sure?? If so, my Target days are over.]
Hardly. It’s incorporated in the US and is listed on the NYSE symbol TGT.
Talking to you is like talking to a wall GOPsux, therefore I will probably resist doing it any longer.
Yes, commentary is opinionated, but the liberal, mainstream media does not espouse it to be. In fact, they believe, perhaps as you do, that when they (the Rathers, the Jennings, the Brokaws) are reporting the news, that’s ALL they are doing. But alas, as I have said, and you have reaffirmed, they are not doing that now, are they.
Is it difficult always being wrong? I mean, getting beat up over here can not be near as fun as blogging over at Democratic Underground, can it?
Some people just like to pronounce it, “Tar-zhay” as if it were French. Too bad you can’t killfile the Jayson Blairs and Mi^k^k^ael Mooreon fans.
Do yourself a favor, Michelle, and keep your “comments” section open and don’t ban trolls.
Where would you be without divergent viewpoints and only admirers parroting your views?
You need liberal trolls, like we libs need conservative anti-immigration trolls.
Otherwise, we’d both be out of work.
you christian fascists really crack me up. talk about hypocrisy! using jesus to masquerade your thirst for transforming america into just another 3rd world plutocracy, where the rights of the corporation supersede the rights of the individual, where walmarts and fox news embrace the masses with their syrupy and simple hegemony. if you really want to legislate “christian values” (and that is the message i often receive from your vastly entertaining web site), you should really try reading the gospels first; then ask yourself: “would i really want to be fined or jailed for not turning the other cheek?” and no, i HAVE NEVER VOTED DEMOCRAT!!!
87.5
No on Wal-Mart … no ideological bias against them, I just usually can’t find the stuff I want there. So I shop elsewhere.
No on Lee Greenwood’s song. Nothing against it, and I definitely agree with the sentiment … the song isn’t my cup of tea though. Not much of a country music fan anyway … closest I ever got to that was the twangy guitar-ed Southern rock sound.
I gave myself 2.5 points on the issue of social security privatization. While I agree with it in principle, the state of the mutual fund industry concnerns me vis a vis, as many of these guys are basically crooks and do not look out for the interests of shareholders. One major mutual fund scandal in a privatized social security scheme could blow the whole thing to smithereens. So before it happens, there needs to be major reform in the industry along with some very strict watchdogs placed over it – and severe penalties for those who violate them. For more info, see the statement to the senate made by Vanguard’s founder John C. Bogle last year:
http://www.vanguard.com/bogle_site/sp20031103.html
Or were you referring to the Second AMENDMENT USCON which says that “A WELL-REGULATED MILITIA, BEING NECCESSARY TO THE SECURITY OF A FREE STATE, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed?”
*************************************
You have some reason for putting the subordinate clause in caps?
The main clause and thus the main thought of the sentence is
“the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”
Oh and the legal defiition of militia is
Sec. 311. – Militia: composition and classes
(a)
The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b)
The classes of the militia are –
(1)
the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2)
the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia
As for safety?
The Founders of our Nation and the Framers of the Constitution were well aware of the dangers of the tyranny and treason of a run-away governmental bureaucracy and had a very PRIMARY reason for the inclusion of the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Let’s let them speak for themselves:
“Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispenable. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.” — George Washington, Commanding General of the Continental Army, Father of Our Country and First President of the United States in a speech to Congress, January 7, 1790
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in Government.” — Thomas Jefferson, Author of The Declaration of Independence, and Third President of the United States
“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants, they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” — Thomas Jefferson

No, Target is based in MN and has been since 1902, I was just making a sarcastic remark to all those that boycott Wal-Mart because it has some stuff there made in China.
A false email went around last fall about Target being French owned. It is not. Shop at will :^)
Hey Marshall – you’re a dork. However, you do posess the most important aspects of being a Republican nowadays: Hatred and ignorance.
You know nothing of which you speak. Either start utilizing some degree of intellectual honesty or get an education. And while you’re at it, start your family off on a fresh start by procreating outside of your genepool.
Hey Gus maybe you should shove it, you homosexual n*gger lover. Die.
Well, *I* can certainly feel the love here.
I suspect at least one correspondent is “on the bubble,” though.
Cordially…
Talk about a target rich enviroment! I don’t care what color they are, hundreds of journalists together in one place….
Now if we could just get the Lawyers to have a conference down the street…
I missed a perfect score because I voted for Democrats when I was young and foolish, and I don’t own a gun because I’m just not interested. On the Wal-Mart question, I vastly prefer Target (or Tar-jay, as we call it). It’s cleaner and has nicer stuff.
I admit I didn’t read all the comments, but it looks like Liberal Avenger is the only one who believes the New York Times!
[The Founders of our Nation and the Framers of the Constitution were well aware of the dangers of the tyranny and treason of a run-away governmental bureaucracy and had a very PRIMARY reason for the inclusion of the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Let's let them speak for themselves:]
Yes and I agree with each of them.
You’re right to personal safety i.e. to act in self-defense is protected by the 9th amendment.
You’re right to keep an bear arms extends no further under 2A than to ensure the Security of The State.
to Glen…be advised that the U.S. sold Saddam roughly 5(that’s FIVE) percent of his military arsenal pre-invasion of Kuwait and as far as WMD goes, once again people are mis-informed and spreading mis-information. My twin brother has researched this painstakingly and the only bacterialogical weapon we ever sent or sold was West Nile and a weak form of influenza and as far as chemical weapons I challenge ANYONE out there to provide verifiable evidence we ever sold or gave him chemical weapons, you can’t- we didn’t. So , where did all those gassed kurds come from you asked? Well, im SO glad you asked, tip your hat to FRANCE, GERMANY AND RUSSIA!!
I am so sick of that myth I want to puke(on a liberal).
Yes to all!
awesome job!
You are obviously a very beautiful woman, but that’s not why I read, heck even some of the Moonbats can look nice (notwithstanding Ann Coulter’s “corn-fed pie-wagon remark which cracked me up).
No, I read because I like your ideas, the way you think, and I enjoy the way you express yourself.
The fact that you’re a stone cold fox (news commentator) is just icing on the cake.
Keep on speaking the truth and I’ll keep on reading, do we have a deal?
I thought as much.

95.
Dang! I need to get a gun!
What’s wrong with bilingual education? I hope you’re not referring ot foreign language classes. that’s the only thing I don’t oppose.
Only 90 pts. for me. Does that mean I’m a Commie?
(I missed the Wal-Mart and Lee Greenwood questions.)
No, I only scored 90 as well (missed 5 & 19), and the last thing ANYONE would call me is a Commie. It just means we’re not in lock-step with MM’s way of thinking. There’s nothing wrong with that, unlike the Kool-Aid drinking moonbats that post on the Daily Kos.
Bam! 95%. I didn’t vote in 2000. Wasn’t into politics until after 9-11, plus I was too busy enjoying my first tour overseas stationed in Japan in the Air Force. I do prefer Target over Wal Mart though, I just think the stores look nicer and have better selection for the stuff I’m usually looking for. But I will shop at which ever is cheaper…
