THE MSM TREAT A MINORITY CONSERVATIVE FAIRLY

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 22, 2004 05:20 PM

Last week, I noted the MSM’s abysmal treatment of minority conservative politicians. Today, the Grand Rapids Press came through with a fair and balanced profile of one of the minority Republicans I highlighted, Vietnamese-American Van Tran:

GRAND RAPIDS — The memories still are a blur for Van Tran.

He was 10 when he landed in Grand Rapids in 1975 with members of his family, refugees from the Vietnam War. They had no money. He knew two words of English.

“We didn’t know where we were,” recalls Tran, now 40.

He does now.

Tran was elected Nov. 2 to the California Assembly, making him the highest-ranking Vietnamese-American elected to U.S. public office. It marks a big step toward the American mainstream for an immigrant group that has achieved notable success in education and professional life, while studiously avoiding the political spotlight.

The fiscally conservative Republican also is regarded as a rising star in a party seeking further inroads with the nation’s refugee and immigrant communities.

Tran sees his election in other terms. He regards it as a natural outgrowth of values he absorbed from his parents, who were among hundreds of Vietnamese refugees who settled in West Michigan in the years after the war…

This is progress!

Update: I missed this news from last week about Bobby Jindal’s election as president of the Republican freshman class, making him part of the party leadership in the House.
