MICHELLEMALKIN.COM GRAPHICS PROBLEMS
As I noted below, some readers cannot view graphics on my site. Apparently, the culprit is Norton antivirus software (and possibly several other antivirus programs). Reader David Moschetti recommends the following fix for those of you running Norton Internet Security:
1. Click on the Privacy Control option.
2. Select Configure.
3. Select Advanced.
4. Select Add Site.
5. Enter michellemalkin.com.
6. Highlight the michellemalkin.com site by selecting it in the Web Content Options.
7. Deselect all the Use default settings.
8. Set the following options to
a. Information about your Brower = Permit
b. Information about visited sites = Permit
c. Animated images = Permit
d. Scripts = Permit
e. Flash animation = Permit
9. Select Ok
10. Refresh or go to your site and the graphics should appear.
If this doesn’t work, please let me know.
Allahpundit (whose site I miss very much) had similar problems earlier this year.
Many, many thanks to all of the readers who responded to my plea for help.
Update: One reader says the fix described above doesn’t work. I’d be interested in hearing from others using Norton antivirus software. Others point to their firewalls as the source of the problem. Am opening up comments for further discussion.
Update II: Another reader writes:
I had the same problem with Norton Internet Security 2004 blocking your graphics. The problem is in the Ad Blocker feature. Manually editing the sites you want does not always work.
There is a “Web Assistant” wizard that is added to the Internet Explorer tool bar when NIS 2004 is installed. Simply go to your web site and click on the “Web Assistant” button and de-select “Block ads on this site” and “Block pop-ups on this site” and bingo…it will load properly.
Check out the comments and this thread for additional ideas. Wish I could give a definitive answer, but this is the best I can do.
Another update: SAnother reader says he had problems with Zone Alarm. The solution he found was:
1. Open the Zone-Alarm control panel by left clicking the zone alarm icon.
2. Left click on program control.
3. Left click on programs.
4. Scroll down the list until you find the browser name and icon.
5 right click on the browser name. a panel opens up with options on it.
6. left click on the options selection.
7. find the filter options. (enable privacy for this program) uncheck the box. click ok at the bottom of theselection box, and refresh on your browser. your graphics should appear.

I noticed that ad filtering/blocking has to be disabled in order to view images. This problem is not unique to your site. I hope this info helps.
I had this problem with Zone Alarm Pro. The fix:
1. Open Zone Alarm, click on “Privacy”.
2. Click on the “Site List” tab.
3. Scroll down the list until you see “michellemalkin.com”. Right-click it and select “Options.”
4. On the pop-up, choose the “cookies” tab.
5. Remove the check next to “Remove Private Header Information” then “OK”.
6. Reload the site, the graphics should appear.
I emailed Michelle some of my findings from my computer.

Another thing I noticed about the image “links” on your site. Note the difference,
http://www.michellemalkin.com/graphics/mm.gif I can see this picture.
and
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/images/immigrants.184.2.650.jpg I cannot see this picture.
Notice the difference? The first one, the one I can see on your blog, has www in front of it and the others do not.
I tried manually entering the www in the second link but still got the same error message.
Your main blog is here http://www.michellemalkin.com/ Which has the www prefix but all of your images (except your photo) do not.
This might give a clue to the problem. Assuming no one else can see the images either.

I tried something else and got some weird results (not what you want to hear in IT).
When I go to your site, on the left under your picture are some image links to things like “About” and “Books” etc. I cannot see the images.
If I click on, say “About”, and visit that page I cannot see the images on that page either.
Now, on the “About” page, if I click the “Back” button on Internet Explorer and return to your main page, viola I can see the images on the left hand side of your blog. I cannot see the images in your individual posts on the right however. But I can now see the fancy lines between each post.
It works for the other image links as well.
Told you it was weird.
Maybe it is a Windows setting or an IE setting.
I’m using Norton Personal Firewall. Any suggestions?
I am able to view Michelles’ site using Netscape 7.01 (Mozilla) and MSIE 4 without problem.
When testing the site with other browsers (Off Bye One, Opera 5) I was unable to view the images.
The question is: Why would two of four browsers on my system fail to display the images?
After a bit of experimentation, it appears that Michelles’ server/host does not allow remote loading of images.
I suspect that certain browsers, and/or other software (AV, firewall, etc.) may cause the server to mis-interpret the normal loading of images as attempts to remote load these images. It then denies permission for the images to load.
I use Nortans firewall also. I have yet to find a permanent fix to the issue, but if you disable it while here, then refresh, you should see all the pictures and graphics. Works for me!!
Michelle,
I too was unable to correct the graphic problem I was experiencing with your website until I did the following
Click on NIS in taskbar
When it pops up click on Options down arrow
Click on Internet Security
Click on Web Content tab
Click on Add Site and add michellemalkin.com, click ok
Once you see the michellemalkin.com in the window click on it (highlight it)
Once website is highlighted click on global settings tab and clear Use Default Settings boxes so that Permit is the option
That took care of my graphic problem.
Sincerely,
JoAnn
JoAnn, that didn’t work for me but disabling Norton Personal Firewall did work.
So the problem must be with Norton Firewall.
I use both Norton’s Firewall and Anti-Virus programs, and have no problem viewing the graphics on Michelle’s website. This is with default options set and is true for both the 2004 and 2005 versions - can’t speak to earlier ones.
I was having trouble as well with not only this site, but
several others. I had it narrowed down to my Norton
Personal Firewall. (I am a really big geek and run
both Norton Internet Security and Zone Labs.) Here is
how I “fixed” it (after about a month of trial and
error):
1. Open Norton Personal Firewall
2. Select Privacy Control
3. Select Configure
4. Click on Custom Level
5. Deselect Enable Browser Privacy
Works for me DragonLady!
I simply deactivated my firewall and the graphics popped up. I prefer to go with the site graphics being hidden as I can’t be asked to activate/deactivate my personal firewall every time I log onto and off of Malkin’s site.
morons…one and all…and now you have the conservative virus that will make you lie to the public and get fired from syndication
Drifter,
You make about as much sense as a one-legged man at an ass-kicking contest.
Take your liberal bitterness and sell it silly someplace else.
I have no problems with Opera 7.23 (or the newer version). Of course, I don’t use a firewall on this computer.
(My new one will have one, just as soon as I can get it to work…)
This is not the solution to your main problem but you might want to take all those dots out of your image file names.
immigrants.184.2.650.jpg should be immigrants_184_2_650.jpg or just leave them out altogether.
This stuff goes through a lot of servers enroute from one place to another and all it needs is one that doesn’t like your dots. And NEVER have spaces in your file names.
My current guess is that the Apache 1.3.33(Unix) server running on michellemalkin.com is set up, possibly manually or possibly by MT, to reject most direct accesses of these files, by using the Referer field as described in Apache’s rewrite guide at http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/misc/rewriteguide.html (scroll to “Blocked Inline-Images”) which says “While we cannot 100% protect the images from inclusion, we can at least restrict the cases where the browser sends a HTTP Referer header.” (Older browsers tend not to send such a header.)
I can view the images within their posts (I’m running Mozilla on RH Linux, with no virus/ad blocking and a hardware firewall router) but I cannot view or download them as independent requests without faking or deleting the referer. For example,
GET http://michellemalkin.com/graphics/mm.gif
produces “403 Forbidden”, where
GET -H ‘Referer: http://michellemalkin.com‘ http://michellemalkin.com/graphics/mm.gif
produces the file. I can easily imagine that anti-virus or proxy settings could mix up the referer references so that the images would not be visible even within the posts, but I am puzzled by marc’s apparent ability to see the files directly, apparently without faking the referer. I assume that he’s using one of the browsers of the no referer list at http://www.logilune.com/eric/noreferer.html, or something else that kills this HTTP field.
If this needs to be fixed, I would look at the Apache config.
Well, using Mozilla 1.7 and FireFox 1 the images don’t show up for me.
I think the problem is in the “img src” tag, that it is not being closed properly - specifically the
border=”0″ />
I think changing it to
border=”0″ >
will enable the image viewing.
Another simple solution is to sell your PC and buy a Mac. Macs don’t have all the problems mentioned here. You don’t have to spend extra money on virus protection software, and multimedia application software.
Also, you don’t have to spend quite a bit of time keeping Virus software, spyware control, and Microsoft patches up to date.
Dollar for Dollar Macs are also much cheaper than PCs when you factor in all of these hidden costs.
If you still don’t have the money to switch out your computer, at the very least, go to http://www.mozilla.org and download FireFox and start using it in place of Internet Explorer. You will love how much faster it is, and you will spend a lot less time worrying about all of the above evil threats to your PC.
Oh, and if you must run a PC, consider better AntiVirus software than Norton. Trend Micro makes the best. http://www.antivirus.com
What Tom Myers said
I had the same issue with Blogs of War.
I run Windows XP, Panda Antivirus, ZoneAlarm (Free version). I can see the images in both Internet Explorer and Firefox with no problems….
Your suggested fix worked first time outta the box! IBM machine w/XP Home and cable modem.
I could never see the graphics at allahpundit. My browser of choice is Netscape and I have AdSubtract installed. To see the graphics I would have to disable AdSubtract and then use IE. At some point last summer Allah changed formats, and now I can see all his graphics with either browser without disabling AdSubtract. I notice tonight that all his pictures are “http://www …/PictureName.jpg”. Maybe Mark and BRs ideas work!
Can you find out why Allah stopped blogging as soon as the Sox won the series? I miss him so!
The image problem is referer based.
For firefox, make sure the value of
network.http.sendRefererHeader
is set to 2.
To do this, in firefox, type about:config in the URL. This displays a number of variables. Type “ref” in the filter to shorten the list.
Right click on
network.http.sendRefererHeader
Select Modify, change the value to 2
Exit and restart Firefox.
I think it’s the way your server is set up, which affects the way certain firewalls need to be set up. Chris below is correct with the Zone Alarm Pro fix. The free version doesn’t have the problem. Other firewalls will have similar fixes, though they may refer to “referer” rather than “private header”.
One reason a server may be set this way is in the situation where a web site pays for bandwidth, the server can check to see if the graphics are being “served” to a browser that is looking at that site and not a third party site. If Michelle was paying for bandwidth, as we read the site at least she’s paying for her own readers. If I run “stolenphotos.com”, and put her picture on my site ( as in ), she isn’t paying for my readers looking at it. But if I use in my html then my millions of (hypothetical) readers would be using her bandwidth, and she might end up paying for it. To prevent that, a server can be set up to check to see if the graphics are being served to viewers of her web site rather than mine. But your firewall must allow “private header information” as Zone Alarm Pro calls it.
And please run a firewall for your own sake. In my experience as an IT guy it takes less than 20 minutes for an unprotected computer to be compromised when it is attached to the net.
Two corrections - Chris is above not below, and the example html was stripped from my comments making them not only less readable, but certainly less useful. Sigh…
I noticed one thing not mentioned: Windows XP has a built-in firewall. If there is a firewall program installed on top of the XP program, there will be problems. I had problems viewing lots of sites until I removed the program and adjusted the XP firewall.
David Moschetti says his fix “was for Norton Internet Security only. Therefore, if your users are still having problems viewing your website’s graphics and are using other software, they can e-mail me at ciimstechsupport@cwo.com for further help. Please let them know that I will only be able to provide technical support to resolve the graphics problem associated with your site.” Thanks David!
