THE MOTHER OF ALL STADIUM BOONDOGGLES, PT III
Looks like the fairweather fiscal conservatives on the Washington, D.C. council have caved. The council president, Linda Cropp, has dropped an amendment requiring half the cost of the proposed baseball stadium to be financed privately. She gave it up for minor concessions such as calling for the city to purchase insurance for potential cost overruns on the stadium and split the payments with Major League Baseball.
But there was one thing Cropp took a tough stand on: Before the deal (to be voted on by the council today) was revealed late last night, the Washington Times reported, it was delayed briefly as the two sides haggled over the proper room in the John A. Wilson Building in which to hold it.
Brave.
