CBS WATCH: REUTERS GETS IT WRONG
Look closely at this Reuters article covering the Thornburgh/Boccardi report on CBS:
A “myopic zeal” led CBS News to disregarded basic principles of journalism and air an erroneous story about President Bush’s military service record, said an independent report released on Monday, prompting the network to fire four employees for their roles.
The panel was convened after anchor Dan Rather delivered a report on the “60 Minutes II” news magazine program on Sept. 8, 2004, charging that Bush received special treatment while in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War.
Twelve days later, CBS News retracted the report and Rather apologized, saying they were duped by bogus documents…
Um, when did CBS ever “retract” its report? And when did Dan Rather ever say he was “duped by bogus documents?” If the Reuters writer bothered to read the Thornburgh/Boccardi report before filing this news article, he/she would have known how ridiculously inaccurate that sentence was. The Thornburgh/Boccardi report notes on p. 206:
Rather informed the Panel that he still believes the content of the documents is true because “the facts are right on the money,” and that no one had provided persuasive evidence that the documents were not authentic.
Will Reuters correct its bogus report?

Update II: Readers are saying the article is no available on Reuters site. Hmmm. Here’s a reprint of the Reuters article on another news site, which includes the inaccurate sentence.
