A WISH BEFORE DYING
You may never agree with Eleanor Clift on politics, but she wrote a very moving tribute to her husband, journalist Tom Brazaitis, who died on Wednesday of kidney cancer. The last paragraph of her Newsweek column shows the depth of love they shared, and also Clift’s emotional strength and devotion:
On a Sunday morning in March as his condition worsened and the morphine dose was doubled, he asked me clearly, “What do you want to do this summer?” I said, “Take a trip with you,” and then I went into the kitchen to fix his cream of rice cereal, and fight back tears.
Can’t tell you how deeply that touched my heart. Condolences to the family. And special thanks to Clift for opening up and sharing her personal experience–an object lesson for all of us who have taken a sacred vow to care for our soulmates “in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, ’til death do us part.”
