BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO BE A JOURNALIST?

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 9, 2005 06:31 AM

Washington Post editorial:

WHO LEADS the world in jailing reporters? That’s an easy one: China has been the champion for the past six years, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The Washington Post’s managing editor, Philip Bennett, apparently has a more upbeat view about China. He was quoted by People’s Daily Online three months ago saying:

If I were a young journalist today, figuring out where I should go to make my career, I would go to China…. I think China is the best place in the world to be an American journalist right now.

Bennett subsequently said some of his comments were transcribed incorrectly, but he has not disputed the above passage and has not responded to requests to release a tape of the interview.
