EXPLOSIONS IN SPAIN

Val Prieto at Babalu Blog sends word of bomb explosions in Spain.

Al Jazeera
(!) is reporting:

A metal coffee-maker packed with explosives has exploded in the doorway of the Italian Culture Institute in the centre of Barcelona, slightly wounding a policeman.

Although no one claimed responsibility, police were examining recent explosions by anarchists using similar devices for clues, the top representative of the Madrid government in the Catalan region said on Tuesday.

“In Barcelona, there have been some protests from support groups of prisoners of the same ideology in Italy,” Joan Rangel told local radio.

But police in the northeastern Spanish port city said they could not confirm anarchists were behind the blast and were keeping an open mind in their investigations.

That would be wise.

Update: UPI has more…

Police are not ruling out a terrorist attack, nor are they discounting the possibility that it was the work of Basque separatist group ETA.

Some officials, however, said they thought it might be the work of Italian anarchists, as there was graffiti written on a nearby wall of the letter “A” written in a circle, the symbol for anarchy.

Update: CNN follows up on the power plant bombings noted by Val this morning. Looks like ETA…

our small bombs exploded Tuesday near a power plant in the Basque region after a warning call from the separatist group ETA, the Basque Interior Ministry said.

The explosions occurred in the town of Amorebieta in Vizcaya province, the ministry said, adding that there were no casualties.

ETA called a Basque newspaper and warned that four bombs would go off at the power plant, and workers at the plant were evacuated before the explosion, the ministry said.

ETA has staged nearly a dozen non-lethal attacks since the Spanish government announced in May that it would hold talks with the group if it renounced violence.
