SCOTUS WATCH: THE GUESSING GAME

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 19, 2005 06:29 PM

***See update: John Roberts***

So, it’s not Clement.

Then who?

The others:

There was early speculation about Judge Edith Clement of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans, but Republicans indicated later she was not the nominee. Another female candidate thought to be under consideration was Edith Hollan Jones, who serves on the same court.

Among the women being mentioned were Cecilia M. Altonaga, a U.S. District Court judge for the Southern District of Florida; Mary Ann Glendon, a Harvard Law School professor; Karen Williams from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va.; Janice Rogers Brown, recently confirmed by the Senate for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and Priscilla Owen, who was just confirmed for a seat on the New Orleans appeals court.

Men believed to be under consideration included federal appellate judges Samuel Alito, J. Michael Luttig, Michael McConnell, John Roberts Jr., Emilio Garza and J. Harvie Wilkinson III, as well as former Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson.

Cable news coverage plans for tonight from Inside Cable News:

On FOX, Brit Hume will anchor coverage beginning at 9 PM followed by a panel discussion for a half hour. Hannity & Colmes will follow for half an hour and then a full hour of On The Record. On The FOX broadcast network, Shepard Smith will anchor the coverage.

UPDATE: MSNBC will have Brian Williams anchor the coverage of the announcement…

More bets…

Captain Ed says Edith Jones.

Tom Goldstein walks back and notes that Priscilla Owens says it’s not her.

Stay tuned…

Update:

0746pm EST. Fox News says it’s JOHN ROBERTS of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Scotus nomination blog’s profile is here.

Roberts was on the panel upholding Gitmo military tribunals last Friday.

Good news: The Alliance for Justice doesn’t like him.
