The Lone Star State is pouring its heart and soul into assisting Katrina victims. The official Texas state government website doesn’t have a central clearinghouse for all the charitable efforts underway (yet), as far as I know. So I’ve pulled together a few resources from readers, blogs, and other online outlets. If there’s a Texas blogger who can create a separate site, or who already has, let me know. Ten-gallon hat tip to all of the volunteers pitching in. Y’all are doing great things!

• Dial 211 for shelter: The United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast has set up the help line for evacuees who need shelters information. Alternate: 713-957-HELP.
• Houston Red Cross shelters: Find a shelter by calling 1-866-GETINFO (1-866-438-4636).
• Local Salvation Army shelters: More information: 713-752-0677.

Texas blogger PrairiePundit has more shelter links and reports that the Texas communities of Katy, Brenham, Bryan-College Station, Beaumont, Bay Town, and San Antonio are all laying out welcome mats.

San Antonio, which is taking in some 25,000 evacuees, is also offering to help out the New Orleans Saints.

Houstonian Laurence Simon, king of the catbloggers, is raising money for pet rescue efforts.

Technology for All is setting up computers for evacuees at the Astrodome.

Austin Bay is on top of Texas-area colleges and universities offering assistance to Katrina students.

Mollo, a blogger in Bryan/College Station, home of Texas A&M, is volunteering and involving her kids.

In Dallas/Fort Worth, WBAP is drumming up funds–$83,000 in one afternoon!
