“REFUGEE” IS NOT RACIST

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 4, 2005 09:52 PM

refugee
n : an exile who flees for safety

Could there be a stupider meme than the one being perpetuated by some black politicians who claim that calling Katrina evacuees “refugees” is racist? Democrats Diane Watson, Rep. Elijah Cummings and other black members of Congress held a press conference to whine about the word:

Watson and others also took issue with the word “refugee” being used to describe hurricane victims. “‘Refugee’ calls up to mind people that come from different lands and have to be taken care of. These are American citizens,” Watson said. Added Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.: “They are not refugees. I hate that word.”

I wish Bill Cosby would come forward and tell these fools to put a sock in it. Refugees seek refuge. It’s a commonplace description by newspapers, which used it to describe the victims of Hurricane Andrew.

And Hurricane Charley (via Nexis):

Associated Press, August 27, 2004 Friday, “Charlie Refugees Stay in Temporary Campers”

And Hurricane Frances:

Hurricane Frances menaces Florida; refugees head to NC

And Hurricane Ivan:

South Texas Welcomes Hurricane Refugees As Thousands Flee Ivan

Associated Press, September 16, 2004, Thursday, “Arkansas overflowing with Ivan refugees”

And every other damned storm that has ever displaced Americans of all colors on American soil.

Please, race hustlers, find something useful to say and do.

Or just. Shut. Up.
