HELP FOR A CHILD OF KATRINA
This touched my heart:
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — After losing a home to Hurricane Katrina, the Chimento family relocated to Texas only to discover that one of its youngest members has a deadly illness, reported KXAS-TV in Dallas.
Within days of reaching safety in Dallas, Mike and Sherry Chimento found out after a routine doctor’s appointment that their 10-year-old son, Drew, has leukemia.
“My wife and I are teachers and, by no means were we ever rich … just nice middle class. … We have 29 relatives who have lost everything, and then Drew,” Mike Chimento said before breaking down and apologizing for doing so.
Doctors at Medical City Dallas immediately began treating Drew with chemotherapy.
As his parents cope with two blows in two weeks, they say all they can do is think positively and pray for a cure.
“They can take my house, just don’t take Drew,” Sherry Chimento said.
A Texas-based charity, Heroes for the Children, is assisting the family. I talked to one of their staffers today. You can send donations–write “Drew” in the check memo–to:
