HOPE IN IRAQ

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 14, 2005 11:07 AM

President Bush will deliver a speech on the Iraqi elections in just a few minutes at the Wilson Center.

Meantime, Dustin Hawkins has a beautiful photo montage of Iraqi voters.

John Hinderaker has a good interview with Colonel John Kline, who has just returned from Iraq.

Apparently, Jay Leno gets it. A reader e-mails:

I’ve been wondering why the like of Leno and Letterman seem to have gotten stuck with jokes at the expense of the President way beyond the time when the jokes were toopical (bad economic news, low approval ratings, etc.). Well, yesterday Jay Leno seems to have finally gotten the news and moved on. Not only that, he skewered the NY Times too.

He not only said that new polls showed that Bush’s approval ratings have gone up 5 points, but he also mentioned that an Iraqi poll shows that most Iraqis feel hopeful about their future. Leno compared that to the way that Americans feel about the Iraqis’ own future and concluded that Iraqis must not be reading the NY Times!

1108AM EST. Bush: “We will fight this war without wavering and we will prevail…” His pledge to the families of the fallen: “We will carry on the fight. We will complete the mission. And we will win.”

Harry Reid’s still yap-yap-yapping:

In a news conference in advance of Bush’s speech, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said: “Tomorrow’s elections must signal a turning point in the relationship between America and Iraq.” After the elections, he said: “Iraq must get its political house in order and get the security forces it needs to defend itself.”

The Nevada Democrat said judging by the last three Iraq speeches, the president “is still not focused on what needs to be done in convincing the American people and showing the American people what his plan is in Iraq.”

Here is the White House Progress in Iraq page.

More on the speech: Bush–“I am responsible for the war.” Here’s the entire transcript.
