BLOGGERS OF THE YEAR

By Michelle Malkin  •  December 19, 2005 09:54 AM

Time magazine didn’t name any this year. Here were some of my personal favorites in 2005:

Michael Yon. Captivating writing, ground-breaking reporting, inspiring photographs from the frontlines in Iraq. Watch the latest video montage of the Iraqi elections posted on his blog here. You’ll be hooked if you aren’t already. As I’ve written before, if there were Pulitzers for blogging, Michael would win hands down.

Ed Morrissey, Captain’s Quarters. Trenchant, timely, prolific. Thwarting a government gag order, Ed’s brave investigative work on the Canadian Adscam scandal bested the MSM and had an undeniable political impact.

Iraqi bloggers. Start at Iraq the Model and click through the Iraq blogroll. True pioneers all.

Brendan Loy. Prescient, comprehensive coverage of Hurricane Katrina. If only this Notre Dame law student with a passion for weather had been in charge…

Another blog that gets kudos for digging on Katrina where the MSM wouldn’t: Junkyard Blog. Bryan Preston and Chris Regan did a fabulous job unearthing New Orlean’s fatal shortcomings.

(Reader Brent A. e-mails: “Junkyard Blog is my nominee for blogger of the year for the work exposing the local incompetence of the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans governments during the Hurricane Katrina disaster that was thoroughly passed over by the MSM in their effort to politicize the issue and put it squarely on the Feds’ plate. As far as I’m concerned the catchphrase for year 2005 should be “Ray Nagin Memorial Motor Pool”, and we never would’ve heard that term or seen those horrible pictures of busses sunk en masse without that site.” Another Junkyard Blog catchphrase/catch image of the year: Did Bush Lie? Google It )

N.Z. Bear, The Truth Laid Bear. Most famous for his “Ecosystem” ranking bloggers by links and traffics, N.Z. was at the center of some of the best cooperative efforts of the blogosphere this year–applying his technical prowess to coordinate the phenomenal Hurricane Katrina Blog for Relief effort inspired by Hugh Hewitt and teaming with Glenn Reynolds to launch the Porkbusters campaign. N.Z. embodies the can-do spirit of the blogosphere. We’re lucky to have him.

10:23AM EST. I’ll be talking about my blogger of the year nominees in just a few minutes on KSFO AM with Melanie Morgan and Brian Sussman (in for Lee Rodgers).

Lorie Byrd writes, “Another contender of the specific topic bloggers is Tom Maguire for his Plame coverage.” Absolutely agree. Tom’s blog, Just One Minute, is a source of superlative political coverage, insights, and analysis.

Mike at Lawhawk e-mails: “…the following bloggers should get recognized for their work on uncovering Able Danger and the 9/11 Commission’s failure to properly and fully investigate the matter: AJ Strata, MacsMind, and the Able Danger Blog. Able Danger continues to be one of the major stories of 2005 and yet it has been underplayed by the big media like no other major story.” Agreed. I’d also add Vi Adkins and Ed Morrissey’s 9/11 Commission/Able Danger archive to the list of resources.
