Yep, it is not unlike many famous quotes that have become mangled over time.

The proof is in the pudding.

Nope. It is, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

And yes, there is context that has met with abuse, too.

Jeffersons Tree of Liberty letter has been used without context, or a fuller understanding of what he was talking about.

Yes, he said, 'The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.'

The reality, and fuller context, is that the letter was about Shay's rebellion. And, Jefferson also said the following, 'I say nothing of it's motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness. God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always well informed . . .'

Yep, in context Jefferson was talking about knuckleheads.

Read it for yourself -

This is not to say what the students are either right or wrong, but that taking things out of context and abusing quotes is something that is done, and should always be corrected. Everytime and in every way, notwithstanding an individual's agenda.

Either way you look at it the lefties will lose this one once again. They continue to fall flat on their faces because in their smug arrogant little minds they believe we should ALL think like them. So they continue to push issues such as this.
