Jeffersons Tree of Liberty letter has been used without context, or a fuller understanding of what he was talking about.

Yes, he said, ‘The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.’

The reality, and fuller context, is that the letter was about Shay’s rebellion. And, Jefferson also said the following, ‘I say nothing of it’s motives. They were founded in ignorance, not wickedness. God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always well informed . . .’

Yep, in context Jefferson was talking about knuckleheads.

This is not to say what the students are either right or wrong, but that taking things out of context and abusing quotes is something that is done, and should always be corrected. Everytime and in every way, notwithstanding an individual’s agenda.
