COVERING (FOR) AHMADINEJAD

Reader Jim e-mails:

Check out these reports on Ahmadinejad’s Friday speech at the Conference on Palestine in Tehran.

Here’s the AP’s report (via Breitbart):

Headline: “Iran Leader: Israel Will Be Annihilated.”

Money quote: “Like it or not, the Zionist regime is heading toward annihilation,” Ahmadinejad said at the opening of a conference in support of the Palestinians. “The Zionist regime is a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by one storm.”

Compare that to the report CNN started running this morning, with a link from its frontpage (from Reuters).

Headline: “Iran President: Israel a Threat to Islamic Nations.”

Money quote: “But the tone of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech to a conference on the Palestinian issue was slightly more moderate than fiery rhetoric last year, when Iran’s official IRNA news agency quoted him as telling a conference: ‘Israel must be wiped off the map.’”

“More moderate?” No mention of “annihilation.”

CNN then changed its front-page link to a story under its own byline:

New headline: “Iranian President Inflames Tensions with Israel.”

The new story includes quote, “the Zionist regime is a dying tree, and soon its branches will be broken down.” Nothing about the coming storm that will eliminate Israel. Also drops Reuters’ “more moderate” line. But still no mention of Ahmadinejad’s renewed threat of “annihilation.”

Coming right after joining “the club,” that seems like a significant omission, no?
