VETERANS DAY IS EXPENDABLE
In the Stamford, Conn., school district.
Why? Mostly, it seems, because school officials and parents didn’t want the inconvenience of an extra school day in June. I’m not so crazy about all the days kids get off from school anyway, but the veterans have a good point in response to school officials who disingenuously argue that they’ll teach the kids more about the vets in school than if they maintained the Veterans Day holiday:
If learning about a holiday is a better way to celebrate than taking a day off, veterans say school should be in session on all holidays, including Labor Day, Columbus Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“How can you have that one school holiday stricken from the school calendar and not the others?” said [Marine Corps League member John] Rubino, who will have two sons at Toquam Magnet Elementary School in the fall. “You could imagine the outrage if they tried to remove Martin Luther King Day and say, ‘We are going to come to school and talk about who Martin Luther King was.’ “
More here. Showdown expected at tomorrow’s local school board meeting.
