Coast Guard Picks Up Patrols of Mackinac Bridge

By Mary Katharine Ham  •  August 14, 2006 10:15 AM

In light of the arrests of the Dearborn trio, the U.S. Coast Guard has increased patrols of the Michigan’s landmark Mackinac Bridge, which connects the state’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas:

The U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday it has increased patrols near the Mackinac Bridge after prosecutors said they believe three Palestinian-American men from Texas now jailed on terrorism-related charges were targeting the 5-mile-long span.

The Coast Guard said that it has increased patrols across the Straits of Mackinac in response to a possible threat to the bridge, which connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas.

“The additional patrols are being conducted to deter, detect and allow for a more timely response to any possible threats made to the bridge,” the Coast Guard said in a statment.

Newsbusters reports that sensitive “Today” was giving its viewers just a part of the Michigan story:

You wouldn’t have known either their names or backgrounds had you relied on the Today show this morning for the information. According to the wife of one of the suspects, the men’s families come from Jerusalem.

According to NBC reporter Janet Shamlian, who narrated a segment on the situation, those facing terrorism charges are “three Texas men.” For all Today told us, the suspects could have been Bubba and the Boys, perhaps upset that the Detroit Tigers are leading the Texas Rangers in the American League.

The three are, of course, innocent until proven guilty. Perhaps it was just a misuderstanding, and they were buying cell phones not to use as detonators, but – as they claim – to resell at a profit back in Texas. Nevertheless, without the information on their backgrounds, Today gave us much less than half the story.
