Pronounced With an ‘Umpty’

By Mary Katharine Ham  •  August 15, 2006 05:36 PM

I forgot to introduce myself properly yesterday, and when I found that Karol’s bio page was so fun, I had to do something about that.

I come from a wondrous place called North Carolina– a land of great beaches and greater beach dives, a land where fried chicken and free wireless go together as God intended.

I also come from a less-wondrous place called the mainstream media. I graduated with a degree in journalism and plied that trade for a while, mostly as a sports and features reporter, which is an artful way of saying I covered racin’, high-school football, and the county’s largest legumes.

Along the way, I dabbled in opinion journalism and figured that might suit me better than being the token conservative in every newsroom for the rest of my career. Along the way, I also did two laps at Rockingham with Dale Jr., which I’m pretty sure, as a Southerner, means the Lord can take me whenever he pleases from here on out.

I love SEC football, boiled peanuts, my crazy liberal hometown, early-80s Eddie Murphy stand-up films featuring purple leather pantsuits, historical novels, ACC basketball, a Robert Earl Keen concert, karaoke-ing the greatest hits of Young MC, and the fact that my dad is part of the conspiracy, too, man.

These days, I’ve traded racecar drivers for politicians, which sounds like a rather bad decision now that I write it down, but I dig it. I blog about politics and visit the Hill while my cartoon counterpart gets all the mad blogger play. Lucky minx.
