Keep the abortion stigma in America!

By Karol Sheinin  •  August 17, 2006 12:31 PM

My friend Julia Gorin has a great piece in today’s Opinion Journal about how she was almost aborted and her offense to Ms. Magazine’s new campaign to destigmatize abortion by having their readers fess up to having had one.

Julia and I are both from the former Soviet Union and I’ve written before about the general acceptability of abortion in Russian culture. I blame the lack of stigma for the astounding fact that Russia has more abortions than live births. Even if you are a hard-core pro-choicer, as I admittedly once was, you can’t look at a culture that discards more people than it keeps as one to emulate.
