Assassination chic

The penultimate chapter of my book Unhinged was titled “Assassination chic.” I explored the popular genre of “Kill Bush” literature, talk radio rhetoric, and art on the Left devoted to fantasies about murdering President Bush and Republicans, including:

– Sarah Vowell’s best-selling murder travelogue of assassinated Republican presidents, Assassination Vacation;

– Nicholson Baker’s Checkpoint, a novella conversation between two people about the advisability of assassinating the president;

“Art” exhibits like this one:

– Liberal talk radio rants from hate-spewers such as Randi Rhodes;

European incitement to kill Bush, like Guardian columnist 2004 Charlie Brooker’s pre-election diatribe:

On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sod’s law dictates he’ll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us. John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr. – where are you now that we need you?

– And left-wing paraphernalia like this:

And this:

To this long list of examples of the Left’s anti-Bush mania, I can now add the TV docudrama headlined on Drudge:

Peter Dale, head of More4, which is due to air the film on October 9, said the drama was a “thought-provoking critique” of contemporary US society.

He said: “It’s an extraordinarily gripping and powerful piece of work, a drama constructed like a documentary that looks back at the assassination of George Bush as the starting point for a very gripping detective story.

“It’s a pointed political examination of what the War on Terror did to the American body politic.

“I’m sure that there will be people who will be upset by it but when you watch it you realise what a sophisticated piece of work it is.

“It’s not sensationalist, or simplistic but a very thought-provoking, powerful drama. I hope people will see that the intention behind it is good.”

The film will premier at the Toronto Film Festival in September and was written and directed by Gabriel Range.

At least the BDS sufferers who papered NYC with these anti-Bush assassination target practice posters have none of the pretensions that their murder-obsessed brethren in the world of high art do:

They all need serious help.
