Before the amnesty, another dog-and-pony raid

By Michelle Malkin  •  January 23, 2007 08:19 PM

I filed my State of the Borders column this afternoon. Didn’t need to wait for President Bush’s State of the Union Address to know what’s in store: the coming amnesty disaster. More on that tomorrow.

In the meantime, as is the White House m.o., the feds put on another last-minute dog-and-pony show to show their superficial commitment to immigration enforcement: “761 Illegals Rounded Up in Southern California Sweep, One of the Largest Ever.”

Only take a closer look, as reader Mark Thomas pointed out:

Federal officials said Tuesday they arrested more than 750 illegal immigrants over the past week in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in what they described as one of the biggest such sweeps in U.S. history.

The weeklong series of raids in the five-county region targeted illegal immigrants who had previously been deported for crimes or had ignored final deportation orders.

The raids netted 338 illegal immigrants who were arrested at their homes and apartments and 423 who were identified in area jails since Jan. 17.

Yup, the majority of those “rounded up” are already in jail:

Those already jailed will be transferred to federal custody when they finish serving their state sentences, said Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Homeland security. What homeland security?

House Republicans prepare for a fight.
