A Plan for achieving clarity in Iraq

Iraq war vet Dadmanly considers Hillary Clinton’s announcement of a “plan” to reduce troops in Iraq. (And by the way, if you aren’t familiar with Dadmanly, you might want to try a longer visit. His in-Iraq archives start in earnest about here.)

I’d tell you what I think of the plan, but I’m going to refrain from comment for at least a few days – because I’m not sure it won’t be “clarified” tomorrow.

You see, something like that already happened at least once this week after Jake Tapper interviewed the Senator and former First Lady on TV’s Good Morning America:

I also asked her about the comments by General Peter Pace that homosexulity is “immoral.” Clinton has opposed the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military, so I asked her if that law — signed by her husband in 1993 — was a mistake, and if homosexuality is “immoral.”

“General Pace has clarified his remarks, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is not working,” she said. “We are being deprived of thousands of patriotic men and women who want to serve their country who are bringing skills into the armed services that we desparately need, like translation skills. And one can argue whether it was a good idea when it was first implemented, but we know have evidence as to the fact that we are in a time of war — when we really need as many people as we can to recruit and retain in an all-volunteer army — we are turning people away or discharging them not because of what they’ve done but because of who they are.”

She may have been caught off guard when Tapper pointed out she hadn’t answered the question – she usually gets a pass on that sort of thing:

But is it immoral?

“Well I’m going to leave that to others to conclude,” she said. “I’m very proud of the gays and lesbians I know who perform work that is essential to our country, who want to serve their country and I want make sure they can.”

But apparently a lot of “others” completely misunderstood her, so the next day, she clarified what her definition of “I’m going to leave that to others to conclude” is:

“Well I’ve heard from a number of my friends and I’ve certainly clarified with them any misunderstanding that anyone had, because I disagree with General Pace completely. I do not think homosexuality is immoral.

Perhaps I was tired when I read her first comment. I certainly misunderstood it, even though I thought it was so obvious that no one could. So given my inability to understand such an apparently simple phrase I won’t attempt to comment on anything she might have to say about complex issues.

(Thanks to a guest blogger at another blog for the caution, without which I might have made the effort to point out what an invitation to disaster her unclarified plan would be, perhaps even if the troops involved were openly gay.)
