Two more sides of our coin
The news being a bit slow today (and really, “news” being what it’s generally accepted to be, best for all of us it stays that way) I’ll take a moment to introduce some more milbloggers to those of you who have yet to have the pleasure…
Buck Sargent (he spells it like that, and does so on pupose) – an Army NCO just back from an extended tour in Iraq (his archives are also loaded with entries regarding a previous visit to Afghanistan) and never afraid to call ‘em like he sees ‘em. For those who like pictures more than words – and who believe moving pictures are even better than stills, Buck has a growing collection of videos he shot in Iraq ready and waiting for you to view online in the right side column on his blog.
Neptunus Lex – a Navy “O” – a fighter pilot, even. A Top Gun not just in the skies but among the milbloggers, too. Lex can turn the most mundane seeming topic into something you’ll find interesting, amusing, and worthwhile. But most of his topics are far from mundane, and I rarely read his commentary without thinking “yes – that’s exactly what I would have said, if I had half the talent with words he does.” Or “yes, that’s exactly what I would have written about how I spent my day – if I was a fighter pilot, dang it.” If you want to fly along with Lex as he soars above the oceans to land on pitching carrier decks, his Tales of the Sea Service archives begin here. (For starters, try this one, in which he relates a tale of a carrier plagued by a sandstorm at sea during a cruise in support of the invasion of Iraq in ’03.) His front page is here.
So there are two of America’s finest – though they’d likely hammer me about the head and shoulders for saying so. Thank me for the introduction later, go meet them now.
Update: I should add that Buck, the Army Sergeant infantry veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan who “holds a BA in Government, and is working on a Master’s in Military Studies” is also a pilot.
