The Democrat culture of corruption, Part 10,001
An ex-New Orleans school board president has pleaded guilty to accepting $140,000 in bribes from a local businessman in exchange for promoting and approving a software education program for the parish schools. Who was the accused briber?
According to documents, Brooks-Simms received $140,000 in bribes and the unnamed businessman received a contract for the program that was worth $900,000. U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said that both Brooks-Simms and the businessman funneled the payments through several bank accounts to disguise their illegality.
The documents showed that in 2002, 2003 and 2004, Brooks-Simms approved contracts between the school board and JRL Enterprises to provide the OPSB with computer-related equipment, programs and services and that on three separate occasions she received payments in the amount of $40,000, $50,000 and $50,000.
While court documents did not name the businessman, an article in the New Orleans Times-Picayune quoted sources as saying it was Mose Jefferson, brother of indicted Congressman William Jefferson.
Wonder if he kept the cash in a freezer, too?

I grew up in a suburb of New Orleans. I remember the education system in New Orleans beign as poor then as it is now, and by poor I don’t mean lack of funds.
Sadly, the stupidity that ran rampant was something that was joked about, and as far as I can tell it still is.
I can’t believe that Paris Hilton was in jail, out of jail, and back into jail long before William Jefferson(D) was ever brought to justice. What is wrong with our country??????
I used to live in Slidell. After talking with a lot of residents of N’Awlins area, I concluded that they LIKE their politicians to be corrupt! Huey Long country. What can I say?
Just keeping it in the family! Raging, some politicians have a “(D)” after their name. Does that answer your question?
I bet even if he’s convicted, he will not be asked to resign. He is not a member of the party of “R” so he does no wrong.
Umm, how about the many more cases of Republican corruption or do they not fit your meme? Do you really not care about people like this:
For example:
Duke Cunnigham (R) - Cunningham accepted more than $2 million worth of bribes from two defensive contractors in exchange for conducting official business, Convicted.
Bob Taft (R) - Convicted for accepting gifts from lobbyists.
Tom Delay (R) - Indicted for breaking Texas law, close relationship with disgraced convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff
Bill Frist (R) - Insider trading, Frist authorized the sale of millions of dollars worth of stock in HCA Inc. which was founded by his brother and father shortly before the stock’s value dropped.
These are just a few but how can we forget people like Bob Ney (R), George Ryan (R) and poster boy for the GOP the perverted Mark Foley (R) and all those in the Reublican party that covered up for him.
No one is forgetting those lawbreakers and ethics violators.
But perhaps you could clue us in on when the Democrats are going to get serious about the rot in their own house? That’s the point of these posts. Since the Dems won’t clean out their own stalls, someone’s got to do it for them.
Thanks Rick you took the words out of my mouth. If the Dems had just kept the rhetoric from biting off more than they could chew, it would have been fine. We could have just lumped them all together but – nooooooooo. They want to lambaste the R’s and then blame the R’s for the fact that they are doing the same thing and calling it “clean up”. Give us all a massive break!
Brooks-Simms appears to be qualified to be Los Angeles City Attorney.
Rick, the problem you are ignoring that there are far far more cases of Republican corruption in the last five years. What exactly are you doing about this?, when are you going to call the GOP to account on this?
“there are far far more cases of Republican corruption in the last five years.”
As usual, baseless accusations from a lefty. Nothing to back up spurious claims.
Seems that Perseus is all to willing to ignore widespread corruption amongst Democrats.
I’m a ninth-generation, French Creole, native Louisianan, and I can assure you that the following is true:
For all practical purposes, there is only one political power entity in Louisiana, and it is run by the Democratic Party machine that has had control of the state since Reconstruction. Technically, there is a Republican Party but it is feeble and hardly ever wins elections. Bearing in mind that I was born in 1949, there has been only ONE Republican governor of the state in my lifetime, and he was in office about 15 or so years ago for exactly one term.
Louisiana is the banana republic of the United States, a place rife with political corruption, graft, and nepotistic cronyism. Everyone down there knows this, and few care. Indeed, Louisianans take a perverse pride in it. When Edwin Edwards, intermittent governor from about 1970 to 1990, was accused by the Feds of racketeering, the people there cheered for him to win and were sorry when he was convicted and sent to Federal prison. In the early `90s when he ran against KKK pasha David Dukes, the Edwards campaign handed out bumper stickers that read: “Vote for the crook - it’s important.”
You can multiply what goes for the state in general by ten when it comes to New Orleans. To cite just one example: One of the reasons - indeed, perhaps the main reason - that the levees failed during Katrina was because the levee board bureaucrats appointed to oversee them used state and local monies earmarked for infrastructural upkeep to take themselves to fancy lunches and line their personal bank accounts. That’s something you won’t see on CNN or read about in the New York Times. It was, however, reported in the New Orleans Times Picayune.
Okay here’s another example, this time of NOLA police corruption: About ten years ago an off-duty cop was shot and killed while robbing a Denny’s by another off-duty cop who was unaware that she (yes, you read that right) was on the police force. The police in NOLA are “underpaid,” so most engage in the rackets: drug-dealing, prostitution, gambling, etc., most of it financed by the still-powerful local Mafia. Again, everyone knows it, and no one does anything about it.
So, given the atmosphere from which he slithered, am I surprised that William Jefferson (D-LA) got caught with an illegal fistful of cold, hard cash? Nope.
To Perseus:
Individual corruption is vastly different from the institutionalized, endemic, political machine variety that they have in Louisiana.
And by the way, although I have deep roots there, I haven’t lived in Louisiana for a very long time.
For perseus
I could list the names individually, but it would be too lang a post.
For the sake of assisting the Former First Lady with her memory, here is a list of blemishes from the Clinton Culture of Corruption Years:
* Number close to the Clinton machine who have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to crimes: 44
* Number of convictions during his administration: 33
* Number of indictments/misdemeanor charges: 61
* Number of imprisonments: 14
* Number of presidential impeachments: 1
* Number of independent counsel investigations: 7
* Number of congressional witnesses pleading the 5th Amendment: 72
* Number of witnesses fleeing the country to avoid testifying: 17
* Number of foreign witnesses who have declined interviews by investigative bodies: 19
The Clinton machine now holds the record for the administration with:
* The most number of convictions and guilty pleas
* The most number of cabinet members to come under criminal investigation
* The most number of witnesses to flee the country or refuse to testify
* The most number of key witnesses to die suddenly
* The greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions
* The greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions from abroad.
These politicians have become the royalty of America. Since we don’t have any real royalty, we made our own. These guys/gals are supposed to be PUBLIC SERVANTS. They get treated like royalty in some third world country. I’m a conservative, but as far as I’m concerned, we need to put ALL these theives away for a LOOOOOONG time. They have abused the public trust and have squandered our tax dollars. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to stop them, because so many of them are corrupt. They cover for each other. Jefferson should be tried, convicted and then put in jail for the rest of his life. Do that a few times and maybe the rest will straighten out, but maybe I’m too much the optimist.
Its also interesting to note that Bill Clinton committed purgery and only lost his law license while Scooter Libby gets sent straight to federal prison
jimyai, please reread my post and try to follow. It specifically says:
“there are far far more cases of Republican corruption in the last five years.”
What does that have to do with Clinton?, how many of those were in the last 5 years, how far are you going back, do you want to start talking about Nixon?
The fact is in the last 5 years by a count of 4 to 1 Republican’s have been indicted or convicted of corruption (which does not even include people like Mark Foley (R).)
So please give me your long (I guess that it what you are trying to say with lang) list of the last 5 years and I will give you a much longer list with an (R) next to their name and then we can see who is correct.
Perseus, isn’t there something in the news today about the leading Democratic Presidential contender involved in the largest election finance fraud in history?
A sitting Senator perhaps? A Clinton maybe? Yup.
The main difference I see, is that most of the comments from readers I’ve read at Powerline, or Littlegreenfootballs, or BelmontClub applaud when a corrupt Republican elected official is charged/convicted of their wrong doing. Most of the comments I hear from sites like Kos, HuffPo, & what-not do not do this when there are allegations against elected Dems. Instead, they consult their handy-dandy “Look what the Republicans did” catalog out, and point fingers. We have a catalog too you know(some of which you’ve seen here).
But if your side of the aisle isn’t going to point out your own elected officials’ wrong doing, then we’re going to have to keep throwing it in your face until you do.
The fact still remains as I have stated “in the last 5 years by a count of 4 to 1 Republican’s have been indicted or convicted of corruption”.
The post is titled “The Democrat culture of corruption, Part 10,001″ and I was just pointing out that there have been far more cases of Republicans being involved in corruption recently.
I agree that corruption no matter who does it needs to be addressed and I see many bloggers and commentors on this blog ignore their own parties behaviour.
