Goat talk with Trent Lott
Talk radio is not the problem. Trent Lott is the problem. Read today’s Sun Herald (Gulfport MS) (hat tip: reader Lynne S.):
What does a fence on the United State-Mexico border have to do with goats?
Sen. Minority Whip Trent Lott, R-Miss., was talking to reporters Wednesday about the immigration bill, when he said, “If the answer is ‘build a fence’ I’ve got two goats on my place in Mississippi. There ain’t no fence big enough, high enough, strong enough, that you can keep those goats in that fence.”
“Now people are at least as smart as goats,” Lott continued. “Maybe not as agile. Build a fence. We should have a virtual fence. Now one of the ways I keep those goats in the fence is I electrified them. Once they got popped a couple of times they quit trying to jump it.”
“I’m not proposing an electrified goat fence,” Lott added quickly, “I’m just trying, there’s an analogy there.”
And the analogy is…what? That illegal aliens are like goats who need to be “popped” instead of penned in? And this explains his trashing of shamnesty critics who want full enforcement of our immigration laws, fair treatment for legal immigrants, and an entrance policy that protects national sovereignty…how?
Wait. There’s more:
Acknowledging the flak he’s taken, Lott said Wednesday, “I keep trying to tell everybody ‘calm down, calm down, let me be the one that offends the left, the middle and the right.’ I’m doing great, aren’t I? But it gives you a level of utopia that is just so blissful.”
Huh? Stop, stop already! Agh:
“I don’t worry about offending anybody anymore, ” said Lott, “because I’ve already offended everybody.”
It’s not about offending everybody. It’s about embarrassing the hell out of the GOP. I would invoke that old truism: “‘Tis better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
But there’s no shred of doubt left.
Trent Lott remains, as I dubbed him years ago, the GOP’s eternal Maalox moment.
Groan.

Laughable, I guess Lott had nothing to say so he made it up as he went along.
Lott needs to learn how to shut his mouth. He speaks as if he has no responsibility to anyone, and he can do what he wants.
Wow Trent’s so folksy. Now I welcome the flood of illegals. We should give’em forty acres and a goat, too.
There has got to be a way to replace this guy. Talk about a backstabber, he is the worst kind of politician.
His own analogy proves he doesn’t know how to build a fence.
The guy has just been SO disappointing.
So he’s not calling us goats, but he’s calling illegal aliens goats? But There’s no fence high enough to keep them in or is it out? Wow, usually analogies help explain something…I totally miss this one. Is this really the GOP that I support?
With people like Trent Lott running the show, it is now surprise that there are no “popular” Senators or Representatives right now. The Republican party is looking like a bunch of pushovers. I think that a good strong conservative candidate is just what we need to turn things around. The question remains, can Fred Thompson become that guy?
Trent Lott is an embarrassment. More’s the pity; this guy had (at one time) the potential to be a superstar.
Can Lott be recalled? What say the true conservatives in Mississippi?
“Now people are at least as smart as goats,” Lott says. I disagree. I don’t think Lott is as smart as a goat.
Lott offending folks with the threat of again enacting the Fairness Doctrine will cause at least as much unrest as shamnesty. There are people who buy into the humanitarian tie to open borders, but thwarting free speech is a much clearer issue. Conservatives have tasted something that has been lacking for sometime, free speech, and they are not going to be willing to give it up so easily.
“Fairness” would be spinning off NPR and PBS to private ownership, or at least fund an alternative conservative-leaning radio and TV network with tax dollars to offset the liberal bias of the NPR/PBS programming.
Best to just scrap both, Fred!
Maybe Trent’s had one too many run-ins with that electrified fence himself.
My condolences to the good people of Mississippi. You deserve better than refried brains.
“A closed mouth gathers not feet.”
In the last election, the Republican base sent a clear message that they were tired of the shenanigans. It is clear today that the results fell on deaf ears.
It’s not talk radio, it’s dumb Congress.
I just hope Sen. Warner doesn’t get a case of “stupiditis” on the amnesty bill or the Fairness Doctrine.
I think perhaps Trent likes his goats a little too much.
Call me what you will, but perhaps some minor electric shocks for the border jumpers isn’t such a bad idea.
Kinda like a bug zapper in the backyard on a hot summer day.
Finally, I am finally registered! Yay!
Trent Lott (among others) has absolutely lost his mind. It is completely beyond me what these people are thinking. Theonly thing I can think is that Teddy Kennedy *spit* must have a large file cabinet somewhere with a lot of incriminating FBI files. Nothing else makes sense.
To mix a metaphor for Sen. Lott, Them goats won’t hunt!
Trent, when your boat is taking on water, you have to plug the hole. Bailing helps, but it is essentially *ahem* treading water.
If the hole is plugged, you then bail until the boat is dry.
Seal the border, go after employers, and 90% of this invasion stops.
Maybe Trent’s had one too many run-ins with that electrified fence himself.
Snort.
After all of the embarrassment this pathetic Senator has caused the GOP, why do Missippippi voters continue to return him to office? Please, spare the rest of the nation and retire this old “goat”.
Ya know, after Lott ran his head that last time and lost his BIG position, you’d have thought that maybe he’d have learned his lesson… Guess not…
Trent hasn’t had a lott to talk about since being beaten down over his Strom Thurmond comments. Now I think he’s trying to resurrect himself with this media-contrived populism “Amnesty is good for America” crap. Personally, I think he needs a good slap upside that mound of sprayed hair perched on to top of his pointy head.
Like the distinguished Mr. Lott, I too once owned a couple of goats which frequently found their way past my fence. The only difference between Mr. Lott and I is that when I caught my goats, I gave them the beating of a lifetime.
Lott is just another reason we need TERM LIMITS. There is something in the water down in DC that seems to warp their brains.
The bare facts of the matter is this…whenever a Republican is siting around puzzled about a bill he should ask himself one question. Does Ted “Leave Her In the Water” Kennedy back this bill. If that answer is yes then that Republican must say no.
JUST SAY NO REPUBLICANS…or I will continue to JUST SAY NO to any and all fund-raising demands by the GOP. I will continue to ignore all of your pleas to me hoping that I have not forsaken the GOP. No I have not forsaken the GOP, the GOP has forsaken me. My principals are in order…I do not condone lawbreakers and I don’t talk to terrorists. When you remember your principals then I will back you again.
Till then my money is targeted towards those individuals like David Vitter and Bobby Jindal who haven’t forgotten the core beliefs of the GOP.
Dan, it’s the rarified air in that ivory tower.
Michelle, did trackbacks get turned off when comments go turned on? I added a link to my 2006.06.21 “No Illegal Left Behind” Roundup
Read that approval rating for Congress on this bill is about 3 percent.
Memo to Lott/GOP: When you find yourself in a hole, quit digging!!!
“Once they got popped a couple of times they quit trying to jump it.”
1- I’d like to propose substance abuse testing for all members of Congress.
2- Lott accidentally makes a great argument for an electrified border fence.
3- But he then calls for a virtual fence, which is an actual cop-out.
This is a test. I just tried to leave a comment with a link in it and it didn’t publish. Am I allowed to leave comments at all?
… Was it a one-time glitch? I linked to this post.
Ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough
To keep me away from you!
Whhhhhhaaaaaattttttt?
I wonder if Mr. Lott ever listens to the playback of statements like this, and he wonders “what the HELL as I thinking?” Or, does he simply say “yup, that came out sounding right!”
When politicians are in elect-me-mode, they must be able to devote pretty much 100% of their “intellect” to fooling folks, because once they get voted in, they’re as dumb as tree stumps.
He doesn’t care who he offends anymore because he knows his lowly constituents wouldn’t dream of voting him out of office. After all, people are only as smart as goats. If he really cared about the people in Mississippi he wouldn’t be supporting the comprehensive amnesty bill.
Virtual fence? Like in fake fence? Electronic fence that is not electrified? I guess he means cameras so we can watch illegals run across. Kind of like San Diego. Moron.
So Lott’s ‘utopia’ is to make everyone unhappy with his positions, even those who voted for him? That is the height of arrogance.
I read an excellent article with regards to fencing in that the Senator feels it won’t work the articles proposes that the President tear down his fence since they don’t work.

It sounds to me that good ole Trent wants to get invited to the elite parties in Washington. The best way to get one of those invitations is become a thorn in the side of the base of the Republican party and ignore them. Although, I do have another theory. Perhaps the good senator spent a little too much time with his goats and got butted in the head too much. Would that make him a “Butt Head?”
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the fact that the Israeli’s fence that separates it from the West Bank has worked extremely well at keeping terrorists out.
Maybe Lott thinks illegals are more determined than terrorists?
The problem is that he didn’t get whacked hard enough the last time he put his foot in his mouth about Thurmond. We shouldn’t make the same mistake again.
I’d be curious to know the following:
Why does a United States Senator have goats in his yard?
How does Geraldo Rivera feel about the oppression of these goats?
If these goats are confined by a fence in the senator’s yard, how do they get their free health care and in-state tuition?
Will the current legislation allow Sen. Lott’s goats to “come out of the shadows” as well?
Thank you.
Yeah… we need a virtual fence to go along with our virtual immigration enforcement.
Senator Lott needs to visit the border at San Diego where a real fence is keeping illegals out successfully. Unfortunately it is diverting them to Arizona and points east where there is a virtual fence!
Can his district please stop sending him to the Senate?
Then again, maybe that’s why he’s there. He’d cause to much trouble and embarressment for the city council…
He brings home the pork and ya’ll know how we love pork in Mississippi.
I guarantee you there will be an extra slab of ribs for us for his backing this bill.
Trent Lott has NEVER been a true conservative. He made his mark as minority leader almost always bending over backward to appease the Democrats, rarely giving them a real fight on legislation.
He always was a useful tool (Fool?) for the Dems. He liked the idea that, in his mind, he was the top Republican who was all too willing to compromise on bills that conservatives opposed but still were passed usually with most of what the Dems wanted in the first place.
This egotist loves the media attention he gets by working with the Democrats, and has always resented his motives or actions being questioned or rejected by his own party.
I think he was only seriously challenged once, I think in the election following his remark about Strom Thurmand, in a primary election.
And of course the RNC and the President chose to support him instead of who I recall was a more conservative opponent, which is exactly what will happen the next time if he runs for re-election.
Is it okay to call the senator a doofus?
Sounds to me like Lott just isn’t smart enough to build a decent fence.
I can.
I’m sorry Lott, but you’ve earned it:
Lott was a co-sponsor of a resolution supporting the construction by Israel of a security fence to prevent Palestinian terrorist attacks.
I guess he thinks they work for terrorist but not for goats or illegal aliens.

* – with the exception of a certain U.S. Senator whose name I won’t mention but whose initials are CHESTER TRENT LOTT SR.
Sounds like an old goat speaking for the others.
Dear Trent,
When Fred’s President, you can bet they’ll never be another ewe in the Senate from Tennessee!
My first post and I screwed up Lott’s state! I’m now going to re-register as a democrat as punishment for my sins!
hawkeye54 forgot to mention that Sen. Lott almost single-handedly derailed the Clinton Senate Impeachment matter.
When Lott assumed the Senate GOP’s 2nd position behind McConnell, I knew nothing good could come from it. He was a disaster in the top role, yet the good ol’ boy network resurrected him.
Term limits will never happen from within, so it’s up to voters to shove RINOs out the revolving door ASAP. No more RINO votes from me!
And Dems call those who appose amnesty bigots?????
Well, if fences are so bad, then why do we put them up around prisons?????
Ok, Ok, if you don’t want to build a fence……I say we use mine fields!
It is disturbing having Lott as my senator. I’ve emailed his Washington office a half dozen times in the last two years and have yet to get response to any of them….not even one of those form letters that congressmen are likely to send.
If I’m still alive in five years, I will, for the first time in my life, actively campaign in the streets for whoever runs against him.
By the way…goats in the yard? They WILL keep the grass eaten down short as a golf green. Brush doesn’t stand a chance either. They eat it all!
Well…I’d say it’s time to put Lott out with his goats. He’s morphed into a useless old RINO. He no longer stands for conservative values. Maybe term limits are needed. At least we’d be spared these old demigods who stay in the Senate/House for 40 or 50 years and drool themselves into obscurity.
ReagansWingman, please, if you must punish yourself for your sins, re-register as an Indepentant. Michael Bloomberg and Ralph Nader will need your support in ‘08!
I’m now listening to Hannity interview Twit Lott. He’s blowing hot air around not saying much other than pleading, absolutely pleading: “I tell you that I’ve been trying single handed since 1988 to stop the flow of illegal immigrants, and beg for funding to seal the border and get Marines to guard it. Really, honest, don’t be mean to me, I’ve always been misunderstood.!”*
*Paraphrased:)
I wish I could have heard that. I’ll poke around Sean’s site for any archives.
But, since I’m already cross-eyed with anger over Lott, listening to him surely won’t help me any.
Michelle you need a “Comment of the Day” box somewhere on your site. I nominate Nichevo, and his comment that Lott must have had too many run-ins with his electric fence! LOL – but warn me, I had a mouthful of coffee…
Well then, why not use land mines on the border?
Sumrica
it’s probably a good thing you didn’t listen to the interview….i thought sean was actually going to start yelling at one point..
none the less lott needs to go….a problem….he’s going to have one next election cycle.
Trent Lott: our baaad, baaad Pet Goat.
On the other hand, he does keep hair gel makers in the black, so maybe he’s a net positive for the economy.
Trent Lott, another, RINO, high maintenance Republican.
King of the Pork Barrel? Stuck the Navy with an old class aircraft carrier it DIDN’T need, because it was going to be built in his district. Big hit on the navy’s budget, when it wants to go for the next generation Carriers.
Lott, please go away. Republicans get a clue or you are done.
Sometimes you have to destroy the village, to save it.
Well, on one side of the issue Lott made me some money. For it was just last night when my friends and I vehemently debated and wagered on what U.S. Senator was most likely to own a goat and, sure enough, I had quite a bit riding on Gomer Lott.
And those are some impressive goats indeed, compromising that portcullis of a goat-fence Lott has I couldn’t help but wonder when reading this whether these Ubergoats were ever called as expert witnesses at the BALCO grand jury hearings? We can all thank God the man doesn’t own velociraptors or we’d all be dead by now.
He fails to explain in his asinine little goat analogy though that it’s America that gets to play the role of the senseless troll that lives under the bridge.
(Hey, how about that, I resisted the urge to propound that his goats might have had all the motivation to get out of his fence…oh, wait…nevermind.)
Trent Lott turned off Conservatives long ago. In fact, Lott has never been a Conservative.
POPPING the illegal trespassers. Now there’s an idea.
Question to Goatboy Lott regarding a fence not working:
Ever hear of a thing called the Berlin Wall? Ask the East Germans how effective it was. As I recall it was pretty effective at keeping the East Germans from getting over to the West.
