Anti-communist protest in Lafayette Park

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 22, 2007 01:50 PM

Jim Hoft is covering the protests against Nguyen Minh Triet, the president of Vietnam, in D.C. He met with President Bush. National Journal’s The Gate has more.

The staunchly anti-communist Vietnamese community in Orange County, Calif., is preparing to greet the Vietnamese president with mass protests:

Hundreds of protesters are expected to line the street outside the gate of the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and Spa tonight and Saturday morning to voice their opposition to Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet’s first visit to the United States.

Triet will make his way to Orange County tonight to meet with members of the Irvine-based Vietnam Business Association and Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, after meetings with President Bush and congressional leaders in Washington, D.C.

Rumors of the Communist Party leader’s visit to Orange County have been swirling in Little Saigon, which is home to the largest Vietnamese population outside Vietnam. Most of its residents fled their home country and sought asylum in the United States in the years after the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.

Anti-communist sentiments still run deep in this community, which is why many say they are surprised that the president of Vietnam would make Orange County one of his stops.

Hung Nguyen, a Vietnam War veteran and one of the organizers of this weekend’s protests, said he is deeply disturbed by the visit.

“But it will give our community the opportunity to let him know how we feel about what is going on in Vietnam,” he said. “There is no free speech in that country and no freedom of press.”

Glad to have these freedom-loving immigrants here to keep reminding us.

Yes, I have seen such Patriotism from them. I had a professor that was rescued by an American Naval ship shortly after we left Vietnam. When he tells of his love for this country, it makes you teary eyed. Then he ends the testimony with his son’s joining the military, to pay back the debt his family owes to this country for saving his father’s life. It is amazing!! These are the immigrants that I want coming to this country! Those that love and respect what is the United States/American culture.

It’ll be the same here, soon, if the Dems have their way.

I’m actually a Vietnamese immigrant raised in Texas (you ever seen an Asian speaking with a Texas twang?), and I grew up with the old South Vietnamese flag everywhere in the community next to the American flag. I don’t recall seeing the current Vietnamese flag until I was well into my twenties. Hell, didn’t even know it existed.

We’re a tenacious bunch. And of all the immigrant groups I’ve interacted with, I think the Vietnamese and the Filipinos are the most patriotic.

Irony of ironies though. If it hadn’t been for the Left’s insanities, the US would have won the Vietnam war; Nixon’s plan would have worked because he would still be in the Oval office to carry it through; and I would be sitting my rosy butt in the jungles of Vietnam sipping coconut juice from an actual coconut.

And now I blog against the insanities of the Left even though they indirectly caused my family to move here to the States.

    The ironies…

One of the reasons Vietnamese folks love America is very simple and ingrained to our nature. Most of Vietnamese people know beyond a doubt that America could have ended the war with them at any time. America could have blasted the dikes in Northern Vietnam and that would be that. The North would have sued for terms.

But America displayed a rare quality that the Vietnamese aren’t accustomed to in war: Mercy.

The Vietnamese fought the Chinese for over a thousand years, fought the French, then the Japanese, then the French again, then the Americans. Even inside Vietnam, Americans are well-liked because of that quality of mercy ingrained in the American culture. (Generally speaking, the Vietnamese in Vietnam have nothing but contempt for the French, the Japanese and the Chinese.)

When you hear Vietnam veterans talk, the American soldiers had nothing be respect for “Charlie” and “Charlie” had nothing but respect for the American soldiers.

Whatever else, for all the defects of character in the Vietnamese, they do prize mercy.

Glad to see this also. Someone commented recently to me that communism did not exist anymore and I should forget about it! Try to tell that to the 2 million Cambodians and the 100 million others killed at the altar of Noam Chomsky’s “imaginations.”

This is certainly encouraging, we need more of this. People who advocate communism are either extremely naive, insane and/or downright criminal.

    forget economics too
    communism just feels good

And the amount of mainstream press coverage on this anti-communist rally has been - ?

Many conservatives rightly think that Communism and Socialism and their ilk are the enemy to our freedom, but at the risk of sounding hysterical, I’d say it’s the endless left-leaning slant of the mainstream media who are the true enemies of this country, for without the power of their influence, this country would be on a much different - and better - road to the future.

God Bless ‘em. I fought along side them 40 years ago to help them keep their country free, but the stinking commies had already infiltrated the media in the U.S. and our government, who stabbed us in the back and let the scumbags win

It just torques my jaws when I see fellow U.S. Viet Vets going to Vietnam as “tourists”, and helping the commie slime get foreign currency to help their regime. I will never, ever visit that place as long as it’s communist.

I know many ARVN Vietnam Veterans. They are truly the best immigrant Americans. Protest heartily my Brothers!!! I’ll be there with you in spirit, if not body.

Liberals seek to rewrite history and make us the bad guys during the Vietnam War. They even call it the “American War.” The cause, though, was noble and correct, as these anti-communist demonstrations that are frequent in D.C. but never get any press attest to. For example, there was a large anti-communist and pro-America demonstration across from the White House by the Vietnamese community in October last year that got no press.

The dominos did indeed fall after Democrats forced us to leave Vietnam. The South Vietnamese suffered immensely. Cambodia fell to the Khmer Rouge and 2,000,000 plus (anyone with the least bit of education) were slaughtered.

American liberals of that era have blood on their hands for not supporting the war effort.

    Same thing.

The dominos did indeed fall after Democrats forced us to leave Vietnam …

President John F. Kennedy increased America’s troop numbers from 500 to 16,000. Large numbers of combat troops were dispatched by President Lyndon Johnson beginning in 1965.

How short a time it took for the Democrats to change. They have consistently taken the low road ever since.

I drive through Little Saigon every day on my way to work. It’s quite a contrast with cities like Santa Ana (also in Orange County, CA), which has turned into Little Tijuana (unofficially). In Little Saigon you see lots of flags and patriotism, and rarely see a Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) flag without the Stars and Stripes flying beside, properly displayed. There is a tremendous amount of patriotism displayed in that community, with lots of appreciation for America, their new home. Little Tijuana however is much different. You never see American flags, but see lots of Mexican flags, and other signs telling you that you’re not in Kansas anymore. If the illegals from south of the border would treat America with the same respect shown by the immigrants from Vietnam, there would surely be a different tone to the debate!

So true. If only the politicians had let the generals fight the war, we would have been able to kill all of the Vietnamese, either through superior ground forces or possibly atomic weapons.

Seems some lessons are never learned and again we are being forced to fight with one hand tied behind our backs in the middle east. Keep up the good work Michelle!

Last week NPR did a piece on the Anti-Communist Vietnamese Americans and basically labeled them as old and out of touch. NPR remarked how the Anti-Communist Community in California lead protest marches in the street outside a store displaying Ho Chi Minh’s Picture. NPR newsreaders laughed about that. “It’s just a picture of Ho Chi Minh.”
