Comment registration is open; Update: closes at 5pm

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 22, 2007 03:40 PM

Update: Comment registration will close at 5pm today

Bumping to the top…comment registration is still open for a limited time.

Okay, readers, comment registration is now officially open.

Register by clicking here.

I am reprinting my terms of use for commenters here so we are all clear on the rules of the road:

Michellemalkin.com allows you to post comments on the site, provided that you first register to do so with a valid e-mail address.

I may allow as much or as little opportunity for registration as I choose, in my absolute discretion, and I may close particular comment threads or discontinue my general policy of allowing comments at any time. By registering to post comments, you warrant that you are at least 18 years old and that you are solely responsible for your account’s activity.

I reserve the right to delete your comments or revoke your registration for any reason whatsoever. Rarely will I do so simply because I disagree with you. I will, however, usually do so if you post something that is, in my opinion, (a) off-topic; (b) libelous, defamatory, abusive, harassing, threatening, profane, pornographic, offensive, false, misleading, or which otherwise violates or encourages others to violate these terms of use or any law, including intellectual property laws; or (c) “spam,” i.e., an attempt to advertise, solicit, or otherwise promote goods and services. I may exercise these rights myself and I may delegate them to employees and/or contractors.

I do not own your comments and I expressly disclaim any and all liability that may result from them. By commenting on my site, you agree that you retain all ownership rights in what you post here and that you will relieve me from any and all liability that may result from those postings. You further agree to grant me a worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sub-licenseable and transferable license to store, use, transmit, display, publish, reproduce, or otherwise distribute your comments without limitation, as well as to make such additional uses of them as may be needed by me.

In short, you’re my guest here. I welcome your participation, but if you abuse my hospitality, don’t be surprised if you are shown the door.

Questions about comment registration and comments policy can be sent to Rick Moran at mmdotcomcomments@gmail.com.

P.S. Lots of folks want to know what happened to the blogroll. Don’t worry. It’ll be back. It was causing some loading problems. Thanks to everyone who has sent feedback–positive and negative–about the redesign. We’re still tweaking and polishing. Appreciate your patience and continued readership!

Having looked over the article “Comment Commentary” from 2004, I do have one question. MM, I sincerely hope that this body of commenters can do far better than your 2004 experience. Yikes.

Anyway, the question. If we see something that we deem to be grossly out of line, should we contact you so that you can be the final judge and get rid of it that much more quickly? I figure that, if we can help you police things this way, you’ll have more time for being a blogmaster and less time having to be a recess monitor.

If you desire this assistance from us, which address should we use to call it to your attention?

I, along with many others I’m sure, hope that this opportunity lasts and doesn’t get abused. I completely understand if the need arises to close comments though.

If the comments sections of other political blogs are any indicator, I would expect this to become a fairly heated discussion forum at times.

    Here’s my take:

On the old MichelleMalkin.com, readers could load and scroll down a single page and read all the postings. One step.

Now readers have to (i) start at the front page, read the story there,
(ii) click on a second story in the right column to go to it and read
it, (iii) hit the “back” button in the browser to get back to the
front page, (iv) select another story, (v) repeat (iii) and (iv) over and over to read more stories. It could be 15 or twenty additional clicks of the
mouse to read a full compliment of postings.

I’m sorry to say it, but that’s woefully bad web page design for a blog.

It’s made worse than it has to be. On the story pages, the right column is reserved for “related” postings, rather than new content. That means your readers have to navigate back to the front page (step (iii) above).

Here’s a quick fix. Readers absorbed by a topic will make it to the end of your posting. Why not put “related” postings at the bottom of the story pages, and keep the right column for the other new postings — even on the story pages?

It’s an honor to finally be able to get registration in on one of your fine websites. Hotair is awesome and I always enjoy your columns.

You do an awesome job. Keep going Michelle, maybe you’ll replace that blowhard Bill-O one day. “The Malkin Factor” has a nice ring to it.

    Thanks Michelle.

I, like many above, check your postings several time daily.

I also look forward to your rants on HA and your appearances of The O’Reilly Factor. Your facts and logic are devastating for your opponents.

What’s next; diggers that miss the opportunity to register complaining about restricted access? Guess thye’ll just have to cinch up their copper[tin]foil hats.

Wow! I am so pleased to have the opportunity to comment here.

The downside: The tension between allowing free expression and maintaining a pleasant and thoughtful community is problematic, to say the least.

Yesterday, I swore off (as I have many times) even being a lurker at a famous conservative site that has very high activity but has historically had much turmoil, cliqishness, and several high-handed purges.

There was a very disturbing item about an Iranian woman who was to be stoned to death. The execution was set for today. People felt very disturbed by this, because the hideous act was so imminent and seemed certain to occur as the government had officially announced the execution.

A frequent and relentlessly tasteless poster who has been there cheapening threads since 1998 weighed into this somber exchange to make a completely stupid and jeuvenile “joke” based on a pun on the word “stone.”

I can not say that this jerk has ever said anything that would justify denying him the right to speak in a public conversation, but he is certainly someone I would never want to come into my house. And if I visited somewhere that he appeared, I would leave early.

A nice feature of some forums is the ability for individual members to filter out comments from those who chronically say stupid and tasteless things. It denies nobody his free speech. It simply denies everybody a guaranteed, captive audience.

Jerks will appear here, as well. It is the nature of the beast.

Thanks in advance for allowing me to post my uninformed, half-baked responses to your intelligent, well-reasoned, and compelling blog. I am thrilled with this opportunity.

My daily net addiction consists of a quick online fix from Fox followed by a long, slow hit of Hot Air which then leaves me with the munchies for lots of your M&M’s. I love M&M’s.

I think I read somewhere that you had to close your comments due to the constant onslaught of malicious, profane, and threatening posts from the Regressive Progressives.

Rather than closing the comments again, or deleting the offensive posts, what if the most offensive and foul posts could be routed by admin to a section called the Out House (a proper receptacle for the post); or the Asylum; or perhaps the Out in Left Field Section; or the Loony Bin.

You could even have something polite like the section for Individual Disagreements Issued on the Subject. To make it more concise, you could just use the acronym for the section name.

The bottom line is that no matter what you call this very special section for these very special-needs people, they would all be right there for the whole darn world to view, like a freak show at the carnival. No more haughty claims that conservatives close their comments sections or that the right blog nuts are more deranged than the left blog nuts.

    That’s my take anyway.

By the way, I write you in on any election form that’s handed to me. If you find out that you got elected dog catcher here, it okay: I’ll walk, feed, and clean up after the dogs for you. If you get elected President, well, then, remember me and get the damn IRS off my back.
