Dunkin’ Donuts cracks down on open-borders franchisees

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 24, 2007 11:16 AM

Last spring, I praised Dunkin’ Donuts for volunteering to participate in a government database program to verify that workers are here legally. The company was responding to customer concerns about illegal employees. Only 6,200 out of the nation’s 8 million employers participate in the screening program.

The company continues to be vigilant. The Star-Ledger reports today that Dunkin’ is suing franchisees that it says were knowingly employing illegal aliens:

[The company has] filed a lawsuit in federal court asking a judge to terminate the franchise agreement it has with two stores in Central Jersey, saying the owners knowingly accepted false documents, used false Social Security numbers and paid employees in cash.

The company has filed similar lawsuits seeking to sever ties with franchises in Boston, Atlanta and Florida, where it is has accused three franchises of hiring illegal immigrants.

The lawsuits come a year after Dunkin’ Donuts became the most well-known corporation to enroll in Basic Pilot, a voluntary U.S. Department of Homeland Security program that allows employers to perform electronic document checks to verify that applicants are eligible to work.

Under the Senate bill, the electronic verification program, currently used by less than 1 percent of all U.S. businesses, would become mandatory.

Dunkin’ Donuts officials declined to comment on the lawsuits.

In a written statement, company officials said that requiring its 5,100 stores to enroll in Basic Pilot “is the right thing to do for our franchisees, for Dunkin’ Brands, and most of all, for our franchisees’ workers.”

Go buy some Dunkin’ gear here. It’s the right thing to do. And yummy, too.

This is an important move for another reason: people come to the US and prosper because we honor the rule of law in business here. You can enforce a contract without resorting to bribery or intimidation, in contrast to many third world countries. If everyone is working for cash, evading taxes, and generally working outside the legal structure, it weakens the whole economy–another real threat from the third world-ization of our society.

More companies like this need to be spotlighted. We should do everything we can to encourage corporations that this is the right thing to do and that we will reward them when they play ball.

Businesses speak one language and that is the language of the dollar, if a business sees a monetary upside to only hiring legals they’ll do so. Now if congress will only put in play and enforce a severe monetary downside. I bet 99% of all business will figure out how to weed out the illegals instead of claiming they believed false documents.

I like Dunkin’ Doughnuts’s policy against illegal immigrants working there. Another thing they do right, besides great tasting doughnuts and coffee, is coffee packaging. When one buys a “pound” of coffee, it actually is a pound, unlike in the stores where so often the “pound can” only has 11.5 to 13 ounces of grounds.

I am, what you would call, a “Dunkin’ Maniac.” It’s not their food that I love (although the egg, bacon & cheese on a weekend morning always hits the spot). It’s the coffee. Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is always fresh and just tastes good. Starbucks coffee is just nasty burned coffee that latte liberals love only because it’s the trendy place to go. If tree bark eating was the trendy thing to do, I am sure that entire forests in blue states would be barkless!

I fully support any business that checks their employees carefully. However, it’s sort of sad that, in a way, we have come to the point where we have to reward businesses for doing a simple check. Last I knew Dunkin Donuts was owned by an English company, but was looking to sell it. Any MM fans want to pool some money together and buy it? :D

In trying to revive the immigration bill today Ted Kennedy asked “We know what they’re against. What are they for?”

Well Teddy, let me tell you.

We’re for more companies following the example of Dunkin’ Donuts actions.

We’re for full prosecution of existing laws of those companies who hire illegal immigrants.

We’re for putting money behind the 700 or 800 miles of fencing that congress approved.

We’re for cutting out all of the social “freebies” that attract illegals here.

We’re for stopping appeal after appeal for those illegals caught and facing deportation orders.

I believe many of us could go on and on in order to answer Teddy’s rhetorical question don’t you?

I really am sick and tired of hearing the whining excuses from the US Chamber of Commerce that it would be too burdensome for the business community to police themselves in this manner. Burden or not, the positive PR DD is receiving by doing this probably outweighs any costs associated with the program.

If the US Government were enforcing it’s laws that’s nothing that a guaranteed 5 year prison sentence for the violating businesses CEOs and a $10,000,000 per violation fine imposed on the businesses couldn’t remedy. Sadly, in this case, Big Businesses makes up most of the “bad guys”.

Maybe you should drop DDHQ a note and let them know the store number and location you are talking about. They will most likely appreciate the information.

We have a chain of restaurants here (Panda Express in the Phoenix area) that usually has an Asian manager, but everyone else (cooks, bus boys, etc.) are all Hispanic. It’s like a Jewish deli being run and staffed by Koreans. Just strikes me as disingenuous. But with PE, there’s also the illegal alien angle.

Needless to say, I don’t patronize that restaurant anymore.
