Alex Tsuji: Another victim of open borders

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 26, 2007 09:35 AM

Why is it that the bleeding-heart MSM always has room for sympathetic profiles of illegal alien children, but never room for tragedies like this one at Family Security Matters:

The Tragic, Preventable Death of Alex Tsuji, Age 2: Murdered by an Illegal Alien

By Lyn Tsuji

On November 18, 2006, our life as we knew it came suddenly and tragically to an end.

I am writing for my son Alex Tsuji, who was born on May 20, 2004 and who died on December 6, 2006. Our car was hit by a drunk driver, Maricio Salazar, if this is his true name. He had a .26 blood alcohol content, three times the legal limit. Mr. Salazar was an illegal immigrant with no insurance or driver’s license. He was drinking and driving when he ran a red light, slammed into our minivan, and put Alex, our 2 ½ year old son, on life support for 19 days. We were shopping for Thanksgiving, and we wanted to buy video games to have an all night video game marathon with the kids. Everyone was very happy that day. Alex picked out his first video game with glee. And he spoke his first complete sentence, “Open for me, mama.”

On the first day at the hospital, the doctors said Alex could not be saved. We prayed for a miracle for 19 days; and we fought to undo what Mr. Salazar had done to him. But doctors, in the US and in Japan, my husband’s native country, confirmed our son was not viable. Alex’s spinal cord was completely transected, and he had a severe brain injury. Alex was in a coma and his body could no longer regulate his breathing or any other bodily function; it was a matter of time and how much suffering, we could not know. No doctor or medical technology could be found to save him. In the end, we, his parents, had to name the date and time of Alex’s death.

We begged every day for God to make our life whole and right again.

Alex is a memory now.

We will never see or hold our son again.

Everyday we miss the sound of his laughter and the mischievous smile on his face, the pitter and patter of his feet, a bit too large for his age.

We miss his joy over a little ladybug or a fluttering butterfly.

We miss his absolute love, his trust that we would keep his little world safe.

A child’s love is given wholeheartedly.

We will never see him grow and become his own person.

We are lonely and the days are long without Alex.

Mr. Salazar has taken away a son and a brother.

On that night, the crash should have never happened. There is no justification. The laws set in place failed us. Mr. Salazar broke American laws in how he came to this country. Mr. Salazar broke American laws in operating a vehicle without a license and without insurance. He also broke American laws in driving drunk and in killing my child. His choices devastated and destroyed our family life.

It took away our security.

It destroyed us financially and emotionally.

We will suffer the loss of our son for the rest of our lives…

But the poor, dear illegal immigrant was just expressing his family values, killing the children Americans just won’t kill.

Why do I imagine the amnesty gang looks at this story and thinks the problem is that the illegal wasn’t able to get a state drivers license? The dead child is just white noise in the background to them, I suppose.

Michelle, how do we get politician in office with a little common sense? And how long will it take? I vote, but too many times it feels like voting for the lesser of two (or three or more) evils. This is exactly the reason why only 14% of Americans trust the government’s abilities.

Let’s hope that Salazar never sees the light of day again. Yet… there’s an additional tragedy here, besides the obvious. And I apologize in advance for the offense my opinion will probably cause. But why did the parents completely ignore their doctors?

I know my view is controversial, but the parents knew on the first day that Alex could not be saved, yet they kept him on life support for 19 days. They aren’t sure if Alex was suffering during that time, and I think we can all hope that he didn’t. I don’t blame the parents– they wanted to fight the good fight, despite the odds, and they did not want lose their child over such a needless tragedy. But the nature of the injuries suggested that Alex was never going to make it no matter what. Then again… who knows, right?

Again, sorry for the offense. I just have a different viewpoint when it comes to life support.

My heart goes out to this family and the many others who lose a loved one in what could have been preventable if our government would enforce its own laws.

I think more of us need to make our voice loud and let them know we don’t want any more tragedies such as these to happen again. Its time we stop being apathetic to what is going on and speak up. Stop being the quiet conservative and start shouting.

Lets be heard… write our congressional leaders, protest like undocumented Americans illegal aliens are doing, and make our government do something to stop anymore tragedies such as these happening again.

I really hope Mrs. Tsuji sent that letter to every government official in the country, including the president. This is the kind of thing that absolutely drives me to tears. I have two young children of my own and live in a state that borders Mexico and the fears are real. It goes way beyond the inconvenience of having to speak through an interpreter to order a burger, or press 1 for English. Lives are being senselessly lost and having a government that stops up it’s ears to illegal immigration while singing “la-la-la-la, is simply unfathomable and unacceptable!

    Question:

Is John Cornyn citing stories like this; the destruction and further the terrorist security threat?

I know Kennedy is like a parrot, “Jobs Americans don’t want”.

If the answer is No, then Amnesty should go forward. We lose. Plain and simple, the most clever will always win.

The point being, if we lose we did something wrong.

    Back to work …

You are 100% correct, when I lived in California that was the argument made to give them licenses. ” If they are allowed to get drivers licences they will then follow the rules of the road and stand a higher chance of getting insurance ” HUH ? Well lately this same argument has been starting to surface in Oregon as well ….
Wanted to buy : State that enforces the laws.

I was also involved in a car accident several years ago where a drunk illegal immigrant without a license or insurance failed to obey the rules of the road then fled the scene. Fortunately, the police caught him. Unfortunately, the court system refunded the bail money someone put up for him instead of applying it to the restitution to get my car fixed. Thank God all I lost was a few hundred bucks and not the lives of any of my loved ones. My heart goes out to the Tsiju family.

#5 radley, it probably took the family 19 days to be able to accept the inevitable. Not everyone can make a horrible decision like taking your baby off life support in 15 minutes.

I see your point - but, speaking as a parent - I can definitely understand this family’s reluctance to ‘pull the plug’, if I can use such a crude term.

I think it would take me a while to agree with the Doctor’s conclusion and give up on the life of my child.

I think your thought process is correct - but in an instance such as this, it’s hard to fault the parents for holding on to any shred of hope they could find within themselves.

What a horrific story on such a horrific day. What those like Gerry Rivers and the Swimmer don’t get is that if they had been stopped at the border and never got in, little Alex and thousands of others would still be alive. Yes, drunk driving by legal citizens is a problem and the deaths they cause are no less important but what the idiots fail to realize is that these people shouldn’t have been here in the first place.
As for #5, I would venture a guess you’re not a parent yet. As doppelganglander said, it’s not a something one can accept in a day or longer, you know the old “where there’s life, there’s hope”, even if that “life” is supported by artificial means.
Our laws have failed us and so has our politicians. They’re more interested in their own gains then then what is best for the country. Others have mentioned the fall of the Roman Empire today, I’m afraid we’re on the cusp of the same.

I’m curious as to how many previous arrests (for any reason) this person had prior to his destruction of this precious child and his family.

Is this the first time he was arrested (which does not in any way excuse him or the system)? Or as is the case in many of the instances like this I’ve heard about, did he get arrested numerous times and the local authorities not identify him as illegal or notified ICE and was told to let him go?

Or is there one or more judges out there that let him go with a slap on the wrist but failed to address the immigration issue? Or as is many times the case, does he live in a sanctuary city where every level of government is responsibile for this child?

This sounds like a job for O’Reilly. Are you listening bil?
