Catholic go-go dancers?

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 26, 2007 12:29 AM

Catholic columnist Matt Abbott has photos and commentary on a really weird liturgy held at Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate recently. First, altar girls. Now, this:

It ain’t your grandma’s Catholic Church anymore.

With few exceptions, the Holy See has said “no” to liturgical dance. James Akin, in his book Mass Confusion, notes that the Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship, in an authoritative 1975 document, cited specific cultures in which liturgical dance has enhanced the liturgy and reflected the religious values of those cultures. But liturgical dance has never been part of the liturgical tradition of the Latin Church, and never been deemed appropriate in the West. The documents states: “Conciliar decisions have often condemned the religious dance because it conduces little to worship and because it could degenerate into disorders.” The document adds that pseudo-ballet, or “interpretive dance,” which has been tried in liturgy, is also prohibited.

    From: Outrage Over Liturgical Dance

If we have people like Ted Kennedy and John Kerry as “catholics,” it’s not a surprise to see the manifestation of liberalism inside the church, during the Liturgy, in spite of the Vatican clear directive quoted above that prohibits dancing during Mass. But do Liberals care?

Things ARE getting bad. When the church changed it’s view and stated there is no Limbo, I think they meant the dance as well.

I’ve seen this before, usually in charismatic masses and in Spanish - probably adopted from evangelical movements. However, and this is a BIG however, I’ve never seen them dressed like that.

I’ve seen them wearing long sleeve tunics, with also long skirts. I’m not keen on the interpretive dance thing, even though I love charismatic masses. I find the dance distracting and not appropriate.

What shocks me about this story is not the dance per se, but the way these girls are dressed.

Just visit an evangelical church and watch some of the productions they put on. Holy mackerel! Dancing girls. Flags. Performers. Somehow it seems that media has infused religion where the word of God has to be wrapped in all kinds of hoopla to be heard. There is no reality only marketing.

    Al… righty then. O_o

In around ten years, when I’ll actually be a Catholic priest, I’m gonna make sure none of that happens at any of my Masses. :P I suppose it’s not so much how they’re dressed; it’s just that the dance, no matter what kind, is distracting. Plus, it’s not a part of the Liturgy (and that’s reason enough to keep it out).

Just a few more changes and they’ll have Dan Brown’s dream of temple prostitutes performing rites under the watchful eye of the Great Earth Goddess, formerly known as the Virgin Mary.

Not long after that, they’ll begin to heal the Earth Goddess’s dire wounds by lowering the CO2 level via elimination of useless breathers, mainly nonbelievers (e.g., Christians and other “patriarchy” supporters).

Max, there was some debate, but they are - sadly - genuine.

I became Catholic to avoid this sort of thing.

The Mass is supposed to be a reverent, solemn, and dignified occasion.

Too many people disrespect the Mass and, more importantly the Sacrifice of the Mass (the Eucharist), with these loosey-goosey “liturgical dance” numbers, inappropriate dress, and disrespectful behavior (most irritatingly, cell phones ringing during Mass).

    Can I get an Amen!!!

But seriously, as a Catholic, I don’t know if having having go-go dancers really is what Jesus was talking about in His teachings. This is a tough call for me because I have been disturbed by certain changes that the Catholic Church in America has made for the sake of pleasing the flock. I believe that tradition is an important thing. While making the mass more exciting (for the men in the audience perhaps), the go-go dancers are not appropriate at church. Catholic guilt begins :)

DISTANTLY related is the concept of “Davidic Dance” that some Jews - particularly Messianic Jews - have tried to bring back.

The Bible is loaded with references of dancing to God. King David, in particular, intertwines it in his Psalms and writings. He’s not the only one, of course, but his name is attached to it.

I’ve seen Davidic dancing at a Messianic Service I was attending with some friends, and it was actually extremely spiritual and moving.

While the catholic liturgy might exclude it, dancing before God is clearly Biblical. I’m not thinking about what we’re seeing in these pictures, of course, but I toss it out as a point of reference.
