Breaking: Flaming car rams U.K. airport; arrests made
I said it yesterday: Jihadis never sleep. Here we go again:
Two men rammed a flaming sport utility vehicle into the main terminal of Glasgow airport Saturday, crashing into the glass doors at the entrance and sparking a fire, witnesses said. Police said two suspects were arrested.
The airport — Scotland’s largest — was evacuated and all flights suspended, a day after British police thwarted a plot to bomb central London, discovering two cars abandoned with loads of gasoline, gas canisters and nails.
“One has to conclude … these are linked,” Dame Pauline Neville-Jones, former head of Britain’s joint intelligence committee, told Sky News. “This is a very young government, and we may yet see further attacks.”
Britain’s prime minister, Gordon Brown, who took office only Wednesday, was being briefed on developments by his officials, Downing Street said.
In Glasgow, the green SUV barreled toward the building at full speed shortly after 3 p.m., hitting security barriers before crashing into the glass doors and exploding, witnesses said. Two men jumped out of the burning vehicle, one of them engulfed in flames, they said.
“The car came speeding past at about 30 mph. It was approaching the building quickly,” said Scott Leeson, who was nearby at the time. “Then the driver swerved the car around so he could ram straight in to the door. He must have been trying to smash straight through.”

Umm, I wonder how many double decker buses would it take to transport all the non-citizens back to their respective countries? Better yet, cut off the free health and welfare benefits that they receive, so they may transport themselves.
BTW: The US has many available buses for the same purpose, remember all the idle buses in New Orleans?

Just a reminder that English English is not the same as American English.
For example: British cars have a boot, bonnet and windscreen rather than a trunk, hood and windshield.
American Asian - A person of Far Eastern Oriental extraction
English Asian - Anyone from anywhere in Asia which would include the middle east and Pakistan and India.

“The car came speeding past at about 30mph. It was approaching the building quickly. Then the driver swerved the car around so he could ram straight in to the door. He must have been trying to smash straight through [into the terminal].
“Luckily he did not get the car too far in. He just managed to get the nose of the Jeep inside.”
He said an airport official had told him the men in the car got out and started throwing petrol about. ”
Two “asian” [term in England for middle-eastern-looking] men were arrested. One had caught on fire from the Petrol. One had fought with police as they restrained him from spreading the Petrol.
Another eyewitness said it was fortunate for the two that the police were there, otherwise they would have been brutalized, or worse, by the surrounding people.

These thwarted attacks are very amateurish. I wonder what the competent, well funded jihadis are planning?
I’m afraid that “amateurish” attacks can wreak plenty of havoc. The unexploded car bombs wouldn’t have caused widespread damage over a large area, but with all the nails that were packed in with the gasoline, they would have caused massive death and injury in the immediate vicinity.
It doesn’t take a high-tech well-connected terrorist to do lots of damage. Ask the people in Oklahoma City.
Denmother, I meant amateurish in execution. I don’t have any illusions regarding the potential these devices had to kill.
The one thing it would be very easy for these jihadis to do these days is inflict max damage on a civilian, Western populace. The bush league execution of these last few seems a bit odd to me.
It seems to me to be somewhat significant that we are hearing about failed attacks in Great Britan, and not for a long time have we heard about successful attacks in the US.
Seems like something has made the terrorists less polished and far less effective than they were 5 and 10 years ago.
Could it be that we are seeing the fruit of successes in the war on terror?

..winning? Perhaps for the moment here in the USA, but when anti-terror laws sunset during a democratic presidency, we’ll be cleaning up car-bomb messes at Time Square, Union Square, Water Tower Place, and the Vegas Strip in due time.

It’s too bad they didn’t let the fellow, that jumped out of the vehicle, burn until the flames ran out of fuel. The English evidently do not learn any better than the Americans. If they want to die we should do our utmost to help them in that quest.
We really should not be too concerned about all this. Our Homeland Security chief has assured us that the bigger threat is a shortage of lettuce and tomatoes this summer. That’s really serious with 4th of July and outdoor cooking and camping going on. So let’s concentrate our resources to the end of assuring things get picked this season. Mr. Turnoff has everything under control. In fact he was picking his nose the other day while two car bombs were diffused in London!

Question? How do we keep jihadists out of America?
Unfortunately, that is impossible to do…these people don’t carry cards. There is simply no effective way to blockade jihadist ideas as a matter of law because someone will always be susceptible to the poison that is out there. However, we can start by focusing on the people in the US who unabashedly -say- they want to kill us and destroy our way of life.
Unfortunately, they are already here. To what capacity, I don’t know. As someone who lives in NYC, it is quite commonly known, in intelligence circles, that there are several mosques in the city that are known to be radical. Maybe not known “jihadist”, but there are people here in America with jihadist thinking (think Kennedy bomber, Fort Dix Six, Lackawana Group). We, as a society and as a community, need to remain vigilant and hope our law enforcement officials are on top of things. I guess the main thing to do is fix our porous borders. Simple idea, but it would be a start. Don’t let me even get into shamnesty…

These guys are 0-3 in the last two days, but I don’t think they’re looking to hit for average.
The scary part is that because of the “freedom” Americans are given, we let radicals and fanatics of any religion preach violent doctrines that justify revenge and death. I’m reading a great book about it now, “Life After Death” by Alan Segal that links religion with society and explains how, among other things, radical Muslims justify suicide bombings and death by convincing their followers of the dark haired virgins that are awaiting them in the after life.
I guess when you can’t get any in this life it makes sense to douse yourself with gasoline…

BBC radio has reported that the “Asian” sent to hospital (a little British lingo there) was indeed wearing an explosive belt.
What has not been noted so far as i can see is that Her Majesty the Queen was in Edinburgh to mark the Third Session of Parliament.
Also the Schools here went on holiday for the summer on Friday and today the airport had a lot more famlies than usual going on holiday.

The Iraq War is widely considered THE issue that finished Blair off.
So now, with a new prime minister and widespread public sentiment against the war, we suddenly get a new “terrorist threat,” which may serve as the excuse to continue the war, whether anyone over there wants it or not.
Waiting for the Algore to tsk tsk these people for not getting carbon offsets before driving their SUV into an airport terminal, setting a fire that generated, only Allah knows, how much CO2, into our fragile environment.

Well, I’ve heard it explained several times today that British “Asian” is a lot more broadly defined than American “Asian”. To us, it means someone from a country like Japan, China or Vietnam. To the Brits, add in Pakistani, Indian and even Middle Eastern…

In Britain, the term Asian generally refers to people of Indian/Pakistani origin. Sometimes even middle easterners. Us chinese/korean looking people are occasionally called Asians, sometimes called Orientals. But since we always keep our heads down and bury our heads in books, we rarely appear in the news so I guess it’s hard to know what we’d be referred to
If it’s Asians who perpetrated this bombings, you can be certain its a muslim group. We’ve had radical Islamic preachers in this country for way too long. The tolerance of Islamic radicals is amazing. Remember those photos of Muslims holding the “Kill all who insult Islam” placards? Those were British born Muslims of Pakistani descent demonstrating in London. Ironically, while these murder-soliciting mob was allowed to demonstrate, the police arrested some people from the BNP who were holding a counter protest.
Now that springtime in Londonistan is over, I wait with baited breath for the summer.
