Summer gun wars: Illinois governor pulls anti-gun legislative stunt

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 11, 2007 02:31 PM

Looks like Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is taking a page from the Jesse Jackson playbook. When your public career and credibility are tanking, launch an anti-gun crusade! The Democrat governor faces increasing scrutiny of his campaign finance practices, a budget impasse, and a debilitating corruption cloud. So how does he cope? By calling a “special session” to attack gun rights.

Even anti-gun Democrat lawmakers are attacking the move as a diversionary stunt:

Facing a budget crisis that is six weeks old, Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Monday stunned and angered lawmakers who accused him of using a highly emotional gun-control issue to divert attention from the fiscal breakdown and divide an Illinois House solidly against his spending plans.

Even the Chicago Democrat who is a sponsor of the anti-gun legislation took to the House floor to tell colleagues the primary focus now should be on reaching an accord on the state budget. A Downstate lawmaker who supports gun rights invoked Abraham Lincoln’s “House Divided” speech as a rallying cry for the House to rebuff the governor’s efforts to split them apart. Although he was holding budget talks in Springfield, Blagojevich flew from the capital to Chicago to hold a media event in front of Children’s Memorial Hospital on the North Side, surrounding himself with nearly two dozen family members of gun-violence victims. They called for support of legislation that would ban the sale, purchase and possession of gun clips that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, often used in semi-automatic, assault-style weapons.

The Illinois Senate already has passed the bill, but the House has not. Blagojevich’s call for a special session on the matter zeroes in on the House, led by Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), whose chamber has steadfastly opposed the governor’s plans to increase spending dramatically.

“One can only conclude that an effort to bring a gun-control issue to the floor at this time would only be for the purpose of deflecting our energies and deflecting the media away from what we’re doing here,” said Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie), a gun-control advocate. “I, for one, think we should not be doing that deflecting. I, for one, believe we should be concentrating on our budget and only on our budget until we get this work done.”

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Criminalize the possession of a more-than-10-round magazine? Perhaps somebody should explain to the Governor that the U.S. Constitution prohibits making something a crime after it has occurred. It’s called the Ex Post Facto clause. That’s why I could legally own and keep my evil, mean, wicked and nasty “Assault Weapons” all throughout the “Assault Weapon Ban.”

It’s almost a requirement for office now. You can’t run unless you promise to be a crook.

Pathetic. And the guy has a majority Dem legislature and can’t get his budget through because it’s so packed with goodies for interest groups that he’s shortchanged the schools as well as transportation and health care.

I think Hillary ought to pick him for her Veep. They make a great looking couple, don’t ya think?

If that law passes there are several (off the top of my head 6) firearm manufacturers in northwestern IL who have already stated that they will leave. I also know of 2 smaller firearms related companies that are looking out of state for facilities. I guess the answer to budget troubles is to drive out businesses that have been in your state for since the War Between the States and which bring in millions in tax revenues and employ thousands of people.

I live not far from IL in a bordering state. Due to their firearms laws, I avoid traveling in the state as it is a major hassle to secure my concealed carry weapon in a manner assured to pass muster with the variably interpreted IL firearm transportation laws. On at least 3 occasions this summer so far groups of my friends have opted to go to wineries and camping in states other than IL due to their draconian firearms laws (most of my friends conceal carry). How many millions does IL lose when potential tourists make these decisions?
Sadly, the IL legislature is utterly controlled by Chicago and it’s suburbs. There aren’t enough votes from the remaining counties to vote down their stupidity. It is a sad state of affairs (pun intended).

Dan Kotowski, the sponsor of the legislation being discussed, was one of psychopath Laurie Dann’s victims. Laurie Dann, a mental patient whose behavior leading up to her shooting rampage should have led to her arrest, illegally retained possession of her firearms, even though she was a psychotic under medical care in violation of both state and federal gun laws. You can google her and read her life story.

The thing that stands out about her is that her rampage DID NOT NEED TO HAVE HAPPENED. She was a known mental patient. The cops knew she had two guns.

Her doctor knew she had guns. Her parents knew she had guns, and NOBODY did anything to stop her from retaining her guns.

The local cops knew she was not just a mental patient but was actively threatening to kill people in northern Illinios, Wisconsin, and in Arizona
    – and did nothing. She even attempted to kill her ex husband by stabbing him with an ice pick in the chest.

The States Attorney of Cook County (then Richard M. Daley, current Mayor of Chicago) knew about all of this and did nothing. HE REFUSED TO PROSECUTE. Daley, one of the country’s most vicious gun grabbers let her go instead of prosecuting her.

Likewise, the States attorney of Lake County, IL, knew of her behavior and did nothing.

The only government official that acted was the US Attorney in Phoenix because Dann was phone harassing an Arizona resident who complained.
Unfortunately, she went on her rampage before the FBI could arrest her.

So, because local officials did NOT DO THEIR JOBS, Dann was allowed to go on a shooting rampage in a school, resulting in the shooting of several people (a child was killed) including Dan Kotowski.

Dann single-handedly turned a pissant zero Kotowski into a “Victim” and empowered a dedicated gun grabber.

Kotowski went on to create a gun control organization that has been very vocal in its goal to ban ALL FIREARM OWNERSHIP. They have been unsuccessful, so Kotowski ran for state senator and won. He has submitted several gun grabbing bills and is trying for a major push right now to ban almost all firearms; that’s the bill being considered in the special session.

He is the most dangerous man in politics for gun owners right now.

Thanks to Laurie Dann and her enablers, particularly Richard M. Daley.
