The “latest” bin Laden video…plus: ex-jihadist Hassan Butt tells Muslims to get their heads out of the sand

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 15, 2007 09:21 AM

It’s from old video, but coming on the heels of Zawahiri’s possibly coded message, counterterrorism officials are rightly concerned. AP at Hot Air:

The feds are already worried about Zawahiri’s new tape containing some sort of signal to jihadis in the field. The fact that it’s followed by the first new Osama video in almost three years won’t do anything to reassure them. It’s also worth noting that the quote in the middle here is repeated three times, just like the quote at the end of the Zawahiri tape that’s got the feds nervous. It comes from Volume 4, Book 52, Number 54 of the Bukhari translation of the hadith; Zawahiri’s quote came from Mohammed’s last sermon.

Jeffrey Imm has more at the Counterterrorism Blog:

In today’s video message, Osama Bin Laden stresses the importance of martyrdom for Muslim causes, quoting Muhammad per translations by both Laura Mansfield and CNN:

“So be alert, be wise and think. What is this status that the best of mankind wished for himself? He wished to be a martyr.”

“He himself said ‘By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to attack and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred, then attack again and be martyred.’ ”

“So this whole broad life is summarized by he who was inspired by God, the lord of the heavens and earth, praised and exalted is He. This glorious prophet who was inspired by God summarized this entire life by these words. He wished upon himself this status. Happy is the one who was chosen by god as a martyr. ”

Osama Bin Laden quotes Muhammad based on Hadeeth Sunnah Sahih Bukhari, Book 52. Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad), specifically in Volume 4, Book 52, Number 54. Sahih Bukhari is a collection of sayings and deeds of Muhammad, also known as the sunnah. The specific reference states: “By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Were it not for some men amongst the believers who dislike to be left behind me and whom I cannot provide with means of conveyance, I would certainly never remain behind any Sariya’ (army-unit) setting out in Allah’s Cause. By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to be martyred in Allah’s Cause and then get resurrected and then get martyred, and then get resurrected again and then get martyred and then get resurrected again and then get martyred.”

The admonition to “Know your enemy” applies all the more. They take those words seriously. Which is why we have Robert Spencer blogging the Koran every Sunday. The latest installment is now up.

Related: Ex-jihadist Hassan Butt speaks out today in the Times of London:

…I disagree with those who say the pressing problem is simply how do we deal with an aberrant, extreme minority who have unleashed a reign of terror on Britain–rather, I believe the heart of the matter is Islam itself and how its teachings are interpreted. If we isolate the problem to that of the extreme fringe, then we are merely skimming the surface.

What we Muslims need to do is go back to our books: we need to debate the teachings that are used to radicalise young men and legitimise the killing of innocent people. We need to discuss and refashion the set of rules that govern how Muslims — whose homes and souls are firmly planted in the West — live alongside nonMuslims. Only when we do this can we successfully dissect the radicals’ interpretation of Islam and fight back against terrorism.

We can no longer turn a blind eye to the driving force behind terror attacks both at home and abroad. It should not matter how painful or embarrassing this admission may be, and nor should it matter how taboo this subject is.

I think bin Laden bin dead for years now.

There is no way he wouldn’t be turning out videos to boost the morale of fellow fanatics, and just to show he was alive and can’t be caught.

It’s been a long time since there was any proof that he is alive.

Yeah the guy died in some cave. Living in caves without the ability for dialysis regularly was surely not the martyr’s way to go. With the surfacing of this “new” Osama bin Hidin’ tape, there is now even more reason to doubt that he is still alive. Apparently, the tape is genuine but appears to be 4 -5 years old. Question: if he is still alive, why would the terrorist organization release a tape of him that is that old? He doesn’t mention any of the recent attacks (or attempts, but, of course he wouldn’t admit failure on al Qaida’s part) and if it turns out to be true that he is dead, does that mean that Al Zawahiri is now the new head honcho?

Another point. Doesn’t it seem eerie that several muslim doctors have recently been involved with al Qaida activities? It kinda destroys the idea that those involved in Radical Islamic Jihad are only the “disenfranchised,” “uneducated,” “poor,” “evil-minded,” and “desperate.” However, it seems that the leadership members never strap bombs on themselves or drive car bombs into throngs of people. They preach martyrdom for the minions (mostly young males) who have been DUPED:

    Disenfranchised
    Uneducated
    Poor
    Evil-minded
    Desperate

into the cause of Radical Islamic Terrorism and Jihad.

But the cowardly “leaders” live on.

Except for those, of course, who have already been killed by our brave military personnel.

    And, probably, Osama Bin Dead.

Hello everyone, so many thoughts, so little space:-)

The people involved in the next attack on America are already here. The timing of video release suggests (usually does) that the operation is already in place.

Though I would not wish an attack on anyone, my fear is the target will be DC. Though a good stike on congress could save us a lot of future grief, I fear for my co-workers in DC and the many military and local response units that will be involved.

My thoughts on Bin Laden is that, prior to our attack on Iraq, he was killed by a Seal sniper in the Afgan mountains and buried in a shallow grave.

Now you ask, what purpose would not reporting his death serve? Well, if it was reported that Bin Laden had been killed, Americans would have considered the war on terrorism over. They would have lost interest, the attacks on us would have continued. By keeping the boogeyman alive, the public interest in combating terrorism was kept alive.

Again, this is just a hunch :-)

    Have a great day :-)

    SirKnob,

So, are you saying that you think the Bush administration is (or, was) keeping Bin Laden’s death a “secret”?

With all the leaks out of DC, I would have to disagree with that.

If anything, it was the terrorist’s goal (and, Zawahiri as the new leader) to keep Osama alive in the minds of the radical Islamic jihadists in order to continue to recruit for the cause.

With this you have to wonder- if Zawahiri can still make videos, why can’t bin laden? Our intelligence still thinks he’s alive, but he hasn’t put anything out indicating that he’s alive for a while.

Sirknob, even when you couch a phrase with “I would not wish an attack on anyone”, to say that “a good stike on congress could save us a lot of future grief” just isn’t right. Just my $.02.

Think about this; They are taking over our country quickly….do you think the OBL terrorists are targeting them? I don’t think so, but they’ll use them.

Osama bin Laden could very well be in a persistent vegetative state. However, there is no excuse for Bush and his minions to not engage in hot pursuit over the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, even if only through air strikes. Musharraf in his weakness made a deal with the Taliban: Go attack the Americans and leave me the hell alone. Now, that deal has fallen apart and we are fully justified in carpet bombing the so-called tribal areas. They attacked us on 9/11 and they deserve to feel our pain in the worst way.

    Not such a good idea.

There’s a very good reason Musharraf won’t let NATO operate in those areas; if western soldiers step one foot in Pakistan the radicals will have a million people in the streets calling for Musharraf’s head. At that point, a takeover of the government by the Taliban backers - and Pakistan’s 60 nuclear weapons - is a real possibility.

Pakistan is a tinder box, hanging on the knife’s edge. Yes, Musharraf was weak to make that deal with the tribes. But most people at the time didn’t think it would last anyway. Now the chickens have come home to roost and Musharraf is forced to fight a war in the most treacherous, inhospitable geography in the world.

Carpet bomb if it makes you feel better. Just take responsibility when some of those Pakistani nukes end up in the wrong hands.

Hello all, in reply to comments received.

Christinewjc, I do not proclaim this is a presidential coverup. We had at least 4 reports of the ‘possible’ death of Bin Laden, only one of which (as I recall) was verified to ‘not’ to be him. AQ & the Taliban drag the bodies away and dispose of them very quickly. The administration would not report a death that could not be verified. There are those, myself included, that would not risk personnel, or their families, by identifying their connection with the ‘possible’ death of a high value target. I would not report the death as anything more than terrorist casualty. In conclusion, I am not a consiracy theory type. However, knowing what I know, taking into account the number of times AQ attacked us, how little the media supports us, how quickly public interest wanes, at that time and place I would have been sorely tempted to keep the boogieman alive. Only the few people directly involved would ever know.

BadIdeaGuy, I apologize and take note of your concern. My comment was meant in humor only, I neglected to add a smiley face :-) I do not wish an attack on anyone.

Gayle, unfortunately, you are ‘not’ wrong.

    Rick Moran, spot on :-)

Osama bin Laden is fond of saying, “When the people see a strong horse and a weak horse, they go with the strong horse.” When Musharraf made his deal with the tribes, he not only admitted hia weakness, he also knifed us in the back.

As for the 60 nukes, it has been widely reported, even going back before 9/11, that the radicals have already infiltrated the Pakistani military.

However, even if every word you say is the Gospel truth, how will the Bushies or their successors explain away their inaction to the victims of the next Al Qaeda outrage against us without coming across as helpless losers?
