“Undiminished intent to attack the homeland”

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 17, 2007 09:03 AM

The new National Intelligence Estimate is officially out. The New York Sun focuses on debate over the al Qaeda presence in Iran.

Some of the bottom-line bullet points:

_Al-Qaida is likely still seeking chemical, biological or nuclear weapons and would use them if it developed sufficient capability.

_The group has been able to restore three of the four key elements it would need to launch an attack on U.S. soil: a safe haven in Pakistan’s tribal areas, operational lieutenants and senior leaders. It could not immediately be learned what the missing fourth element is.

_The group will step up its efforts to position operatives inside the U.S.

_The U.S. will face “a persistent and evolving terrorist threat” over the next three years. The main danger comes from Islamic terrorist groups, especially al-Qaida, and is “driven by the undiminished intent to attack the homeland and a continued effort by terrorist groups to adapt and improve their capabilities.”

Put that on a bumper sticker.

Steve at ThreatsWatch: “It must be recognized that, in the course of this long war, there will be no final defeat of al-Qaeda without major unforgiving ground operations within Pakistan.”

Peter Brookes: While al Qaeda advances, Congress retreats.

I’m convinced that Al Qaeda maintains its murderous intent but I’m not convinced it maintains its murderous capability. Al Qaeda at its apogee ran on a budget equivalent to a big grocery store. Certainly, its budget has been considerably restricted since Sep 11. I am unpersuaded that Bin Laden and Zawahiri have the ability to project power outside Waziristan. All Zawahiri the Blowhard does is make tapes. Terrorists who can, bomb. Terrorist who can’t, make videos.

There was a terrorist analysist on TV a few months ago. His take was anything that AQ said they’d do, they would.

I take EVERYTHING they say seriously.

It’s all a matter of WHEN.

They have the capability alright…Iran supports them…it’s just having the resources to not be stopped or their plans foiled.

The cost of a single bomb(er) is low. OKC showed what a few could do with hardly nothing. It’s not about budget and superduper weapons. Al Qaeda can get by with very little, and do huge damage. It takes little to carry the bomb and less to push the button. Such is the truth of asymmetric warfare.

After the next attacks happen watch the moonbats & nutroots blame America. The best way to get in the U.S. is to walk across the border. The politicians who don’t want to build the fence are the first ones that are going to blame President Bush for not building it.

We have to decide what is more important: Being politically correct by letting everyone into our country and not limiting Muslim immigration, or actually preventing future attacks by securing our border and only allowing those who will assimilate into our country.

As long as we are PC, we’ve lost the War on Terror.

it seems that al qaeda doesn’t really need a whole lot of money to accomplish an attack, they just need able bodies. there were other planes that didn’t get off the ground. so it requires logistics and timing. these are what have to be perfect. maybe that is all they are waiting for.. timing.

I agree with Steve at Threats Watch, though I say it the following way -

If we truly wanted to win this war lots of people will have to be killed, many feelings will be hurt, there would be massive destruction, and we would make our enemies submit to our will.

If we are unprepared to do this, then we are unprepared to go to war.

Getting our enemy, bin Laden and al-Queda in Afghanistan, was probably a doable mission.

Crusade against the middle eastern countries hostile to Israel and occupation of Iraq will probably commit us to a totally unnecessary 100-200 year struggle against all of radical Islam.

In 2003 there was one Al Qaeda, now there are two– the original and AQI, Al Qaeda in Iraq. The new NIE says AQI wants to attack America too.

The invasion and occupation of Iraq seems to have at least doubled the terrorism threat.

I’m afraid Steve at Threats Watch is right.

As long as there is a Pakistani government that either can’t or won’t fight the extremists, there will be terrorists there.

And the depressing thing is, looking beyond Musharraf – hopefully to some kind of civilian/military alliance with people like Benizir Bhutto – there is still not the will IN THE ARMY ITSELF to go after the Taliban and their extremist friends. This is why Musharraf signed those horrible deals with the tribes in Waziristan – the army was refusing to fight.

Best case scenario would be another military strongman taking over (Pakistani people admire the military more than any other institution in their society) who enjoys broad popular support in the urban areas and who might be able to go after al-Qaeda and other foreigners in the north if he frames the war in a nationalistic way.

It would mean distancing himself from Washington and getting out of the partnership business with Afghanistan. But that’s about the best we could hope for in the near future.

The best we can hope for is any Mosque found helping terrorism in any way bulldozed, and the American flag planted on top of it.

Believers in Islam are coming through the southern border. This is why Chertoff has a gut feeling about something just might happen.

Once again, I must identify the cause of the problem: WE CUT AND RUN, DIDN’T STAY THE COURSE, DIDN’T FINISH THE JOB in Afghanistan. Al Quidia in Iraq was formed after we invaded. If we finished the job in Afghanistan Al Quida would not be threat. So Bush and others blame Pakistan? That is exactly what someone without courage does? Does not take responsibility for their mistakes. When was the last time any of you heard Bush, Cheney, MM, or Hannity admit they were wrong? Never. Exactly, to do so takes courage!
