The explosion does not indicate a need for rate increases. Utilities are state-protected monopolies that habitually overcharge for sub-standard services with minimal investment in infrastructure. It's the utility's fault, not Bush's!!

They say rain got on the hot steam pipes and that's why they blew up. What about all the other thousands of times it has rained in that spot in NYC? How come it blew up now? There was hardly any rain that day anyway. More like a drizzle. But we can all bet lunch that the CEO of Con Edison won't even be fired, let alone commit hari-kari.

It happened right around the corner from one of the biggest creators of traffic congestion in NYC.

Will Mayor Bloomberg do anything about Park Ave. being blocked off at 42nd street?

If he cares so much about traffic jams, congestion and air pollution, why does he let Park Avenue be blocked off? Why doesn’t he do anything about that?

It's true, Pershing Square Restaurant blocks Park Avenue going South at 42nd St. for about 12 hours a day/5 months of the year! This Causes Massive Congestion and Air Pollution!

But apparently it does not bother NYC’s Nanny-in-Chief Mike “Congestion Pricing Tax” Bloomberg?

It certainly supports his claim that the city is hugely congested.

Check out the map! Tell your friends!

We all need a little scapegoating in our lives, right? Why not? It feels so good!

Cat died? Bush and Cheney's fault -- I think we can still pin some of it on Rumsfeld.
Milk turned sour? Bush's fault
Headache? Bush's fault
Tummy ache? Yep, Bush's fault
and if we didn't have that needless and pointless "war on terror" going on we could have funded the Oingo-Boingo reunion with Bananrama as the opening act. Thanks Bush! Thanks! Gosh!

I live in NYC and yes, this is ConEd's (our local power supplier) responsibility. But, the writer is correct that our priorities are messed up. Bush want to create a republican government in Iraq but no one there seems to want to. Our tax dollars are being spent and lives are being lost to stand between factions in a civil war. The money is Iraq can be better spent to provide universal health care. Sorry, if the folks at Rand Corp. disagree.

Oh come on, don't you guys know anything?

Everything bad is Bush's fault. Everything.

Once you get that straight everything else just falls into place.

I knew Bloomberg was steamed over the apparent failure of his congestion pricing, but this mad? ;-)

@lawhawk

Ok.. so they are owned by ConEd.. so then it would probably be a state of NY Public Utilities Commission issue as to getting the ok to up the rates to cover the fixing/replacement of the pipes.. how close am I there? That's how it would work here.

Ok Michelle, I have to admit, I am in the Alex Jones camp. Yes ALEX JONES! I love the guy. Like him, I distrust the government more than jihadists. I can't lash out against Bush because I am a Christian. On this explosion, I'll remain silent. But I'm sick to death watching NYC being turned into a hard-line police state.
