John Doe update: Not dead yet
Audrey Hudson has a fresh report on the status of the John Doe amendment. Take heart and take action. It’s not dead yet: “Democrats have been backed into a corner by public outrage over their efforts, so we are seeing these Democrats publicly say they support it in principle, but behind the scenes they are working to kill it,” said one Republican leadership aide close to the conference process. “There are powerful Democrats in the House and Senate trying to kill this provision,” the aide said.
More:
“Keeping the pressure on” to include the provision are Sen. Joe Lieberman, Connecticut Independent and chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, the committee’s ranking member, Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine whose efforts last week fell three votes short of passing the provision to an education bill, and Rep. Pete King, New York Republican and ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee and an author of the provision.
Some Republican aides are attributing the mounting pressure to support the provision to press reports and the blogosphere, where bloggers turned bloggyists are posting phone numbers of Democrat congressional leaders and urging readers to call in with their support.
“The blogs have been a terrific vehicle for expressing public outrage over Democratic attempts to kill this provision,” said a spokesman for Mr. King.
In other words: Don’t let up.

Good, John Doe is too important to let the Dems end it. I can’t believe the numbskulls thought they could get away with it without taking political damage.
The next provision to be added will protect terrorists. We wouldn’t want to be accused of profiling!
My goodness, where is what is left of their heads? Are they shooting for another record on the lowest approval rating in history (which they already own)?
I say, keep up the good work and show the American public just how bad the Republicans are.
I also say, they do NOT hate America, just Americans.
Good to hear this is not yet totally dead … you know … we endure bad legislation because people make mistakes … but there is no excuse for stupid legislation … common sense needs to return to Wash. DC, and the sooner the better …
soap is this a typo?
“I say, keep up the good work and show the American public just how bad the Republicans are.”
Sorry
/sacr on
/sarc off
That was totally sarcastic!
Sorry, I’m a little out of it today.
It’s okay. I read somewhere you are a bit emotional. Me too. These politicians make me want to slap someone.
Terrorist at airport: “You lookin’ at me? You lookin’ at me? You lookin’ at me? Then who the hell else are you lookin’ at? You lookin’ at me? Well I’m the only terrorist here.”
Nancy Pelosi: (To the tune of I Feel Pretty) “I see nothing,
no, not nothing
I’ve seen nothing behind this Burkha all night…”
I wonder what the poll numbers for support of this measure would look like -after- another major attack on US soil?
It’s obvious that American Liberals are dangerously fickle.
I’m glad my Senator Collins is on the right side of this one, for a change.
I guess I’ll try to call Dingy’s office…that might be a futile effort.
Since the measure only lost by 3 votes last time around, I would suggest that the appropriate targets for applying pressure are the 4 who chose not to vote at all:
Brownback (R-KS)
Feinstein (D-CA)
Johnson (D-SD)
Obama (D-IL)
Do not let up the pressure until we get this important amendment passed!
planetgeo
Problem with your list is that Johnson (D-SD) is unable to perform his duties … he is the one that had the hemorrhage and brain surgery back in December ‘06 … so he is not there to vote and has not been replaced at this time … so that only leaves 3 names to your list …
And I havn’t heard diddly doo from Feinstein or expect to here in Cal.
Even though we know the dems fawn over and try to appease our enemies, it’s hard to believe that even they don’t want to protect Americans against this dangerous stupidity.
It’s also hard to believe that the average voting democrat public does not want to be protected against this insanity. My neighbors are democrats and they are both furious about this. They have contacted their senators.
Desertlover,
My point was simply that you start by going after those who didn’t vote at all before you attempt to win over the hardcore partisan NO votes. Even discounting Johnson, who like Reid is mentally incapacitated, the 3 remaining non-voters are definitiely susceptible to pressure.
* Brownback is a Republican.
* Obama is running for President.
* Feinstein relishes her reputation as a moderate.
And 3 is all we need.
To akl the congress critters…
Support “John Doe” and he will support you.
Planetgeo..I’m not sure that Feinstein has a reputation as a moderate…maybe when compared to Nancy strech, or Kucincich…maybe
By the the time the Democrats get what they want, this will be a A Bill To Ensure Muslim Travel Rights Across Islamomerica.
come on no. 18 only if blomburg or kisimage gets elected
Feinstein a moderate? rofl… not bloody likely.
I’m with Dan though.. for a change my Senator is doing the right thing. Now if we could get her co-worker in line. Snowe is a moderate aka RINO… which for the most part hasn’t been a problem but lately her opinions have been “moderately” in line with Kennedy. In some ways I can’t fault her even though I disagree. This is a freaking blue state from the governor on down. Not exactly sure how they’ve managed to keep 2 Republican Senators in office. Both Reps are DNC… grrr..
Do we know who is on the Conference Committee?
It would seem like those would be the people to contact.
