The fate of Ward Churchill Update: Fired 8-1 vote And now, the bogus Indian’s gonna file a bogus lawsuit
Update 11:15pm Eastern. Photographer El Marco captured the followers of Ward Churchill in their natural habitat…
Update 9:03pm Eastern. Slapstick Politics posts photos from the circus and has video coming up.
Also, it seems that Flipping the Bird 101 is a mandatory course at CU:
Update 8:52pm Eastern. Who cast the sole vote against firing Ward Churchill? The Denver Post reports it was CU Regent Cindy Carlisle:
Regents at the University of Colorado voted 8-1 today to terminate professor Ward Churchill. The vote was made en masse; regent Cindy Carlisle was the lone vote in favor of keeping Churchill. Immediately after the announcement, protestors began a loud demonstration Glen Miller Ballroom of CU’s Memorial Hall, with chants and drums. Churchill’s lawyer, David Lane, has said he has a lawsuit ready to be filed. CU President Hank Brown and Regents Chair Patricia “Pat” Hayes called a news conference after the vote. Hayes said that Carlisle had agreed that Churchill was guilty of the findings, but she disagreed with the sanctions imposed.
Pirate Ballerina commemorates the vote:
Update 8:15pm Eastern. Next steps–via RMN, Churchill’s gonna sue…
The University of Colorado’s Board of Regents today fired professor Ward Churchill, 2 1/2 years after his comments about the victims of the 9/11 attacks sparked a firestorm.
The regents, in an 8-1 vote, said Churchill committed academic misconduct. The board convened this morning and spent several hours behind closed doors hearing the charges against Churchill.
University president Hank Brown, in a news conference, said “the decision was really pretty basic” based on the board’s findings. Churchill was accused of plagiarism, falsification and other infractions.
Said Brown: “The individual did not express regret, did not apologize, did not indicate a willingness to refrain from this type of
falsification in the future.”Immediately after the vote was announced, Churchil said “New game, new game.” He has vowed to sue if the regents acted against him.
A handful of protesters were gathered around a drum, beating it and chanting as someone else held an American Indian Movement flag.
Update 7:00pm Eastern. Still no action…7:40pm Eastern…here we go…8-1. Churchill fired…meeting hastily adjourned…a bit of screeching and booing…video feed gone…
Bumped and updating 5:40pm Eastern. The decision should be coming down anytime now. Stand by…Video link from CU of the afternoon public session is supposed to be here. Scheduled start time: 4pm Mountain Time.
A quick reminder of the charges against him, via the RMN:
*Historical facts: Churchill manufactured events in which European Americans intentionally spread smallpox to kill Indians. In one such event, the Army is said to have distributed tainted blankets to Mandan Indians. But no evidence backs the claim.
*Elsewhere, Churchill claimed the United States adopted a formal racial code to identify Indians, similar to the code used by the Nazis to identify Jews. U.S. law includes no such code, legal scholars say.
*Plagiarism: Churchill published an essay on water issues in Canada that closely resembles a pamphlet by a Canadian environmental group. He also borrowed a work on fishing rights originally published by Canadian scholar Fay Cohen.
*Falsifying sources: Churchill wrote essays under the names of other people, which he then cited as independent sources in his footnotes.

The showdown over Ward Churchill climaxes today. RMN reports:
University of Colorado ethnic- studies professor Ward Churchill faces dismissal today at the hands of the school’s Board of Regents after 2 1/2 years of national controversy and investigations.
Protesters backing Churchill have vowed to hold demonstrations at the Boulder campus. CU officials say police will be present.
Churchill has told Boulder’s Daily Camera he expects to be fired today.
He is charged with academic misconduct, ranging from plagiarism to inventing facts and even entire historical episodes. Among the more unusual charges is that Churchill published essays under the names of other people then cited them in his footnotes as independent sources supporting his views.
A faculty investigative committee upheld the charges one year ago. The matter then crawled through an extensive appeals process, with CU President Hank Brown recommending dismissal in May.
The regents will meet today in closed session to hear the charges and Churchill’s response. They will then deliberate in private but vote in public on whether to fire him.
The vigilant bloggers at Pirate Ballerina will be liveblogging the proceedings and protests all day. They’ve dubbed it “Dismissapalooza.” Also check out Colorado blog Slapsticks Politics, which frames the day this way: “Chickens roosting or chicken regents?”
Whatever happens, you can bet we haven’t seen the last of the king of the moonbats. Tenured radicals never die, they just bloviate away.

Good riddance to bad rubish, if they actually kick him out.
They better fire him.
Isn’t “invented facts” a lie? Leave it to the Rocky Mountain News to euphamize the bejeebers out of it.
And Churchill? He’ll likely have an education post in the Hillary administration - God forbid! I much rather he disappear into the ether of the Venezuelan jungles, never to darken the shores of my free country again.
“Protesters backing Churchill”?!? How can anyone who has paid any attention back this fraud? I’d love to see who these backers are.
I agree completely. This communist-wannabe can find a comfortable home in Hugo Chavez’s Ministry of Propaganda. Cindy Sheehan, Danny Glover and Code Pink can join him there where they won’t have to(or be allowed to)bash their President on an hourly basis.
Maybe Chavez will issue Ward one of his beloved symbols, an AK-47, so he can live out his dirty-hippie revolution fantasies for real, but not where any of us have to put up with it anymore.
This is one where the conservatives can rejoice. There can’t be a negative for conservatives. If he stays, conservatives can paint the whole college as radical which gives a nice backdrop to the whole idea of an abhorrent state of our education system. If he goes, the conservatives, as well as the students of the University of Colorado win. We are conservatives. We need to start looking for the opportunities. Rejoice.
It’s about #@%* time!
This case illustrates that our Universities have gone off the deep end. This guy has had over 3 years of investigations and hearings that should have been decided in less than a week.
He defrauded the university by saying he was an Indian to get hired under affirmative action policies when he was not even related to any Indian Tribe. Case closed, your fired in any other business. He lied on his application.
Only at Universities do they allow this kind of nonsense to protect Liberal Professors with tenure rules.
If he was a conservative, he would have been fired long ago for some trumped up violation like tripping on his shoe laces or by offending some minority group.
After he’s fired, I hear he and Rigoberta Menchu will be going into business together selling fake IDs.
If Ward Churchill was a conservative, the faculty would have run him off campus on a rail before he was even hired in the first place, further reinforcing your point that our universities have gone off the ideological deep-end.
Imagine how that university would react if news broke that they were going to hire David Horowitz in the Mid-East Studies Department. No one would support him, and the university president would be hung in effigy for even considering such a thing. But liar and fake revolutionary Ward gets protestors on his behalf. Disgusting.
Facts mean nothing to the left. How many times have we heard that for them, it’s all about feelings? Facts just get in the way. Who cares about the truth of Ward Churchill’s behavior and lies? They like his anti-American beliefs and rhetoric…that’s what counts. Truth and the American way? They don’t give a rat’s fanny.
Feelings and a double standard for anyone who dares to disagree with them. That’s what’s in our universities and those are who are teaching our children. God help us.
The best thing that could happen for education in our country from K - college is the banning of tenure. Accountability for your job performance, just like every other American has to deal with, would make a radical difference in education.
Never mind if he were a conservative. Imagine how this would have gone down if he were a lacrosse player.
“Whatever happens, you can bet we haven’t seen the last of the king of the moonbats. Tenured radicals never die, they just bloviate away.” (MM)
Truly funny
Let’s name him Count Moonbatula: Dark Lord of Moonbatsylvania, ideological vampire sucking the spirit out of America one student at a time. I nominate Rush Limbaugh for the role of Van Helsing in this drama. Hehehe.
I bet it gets even better. He’ll sue and probably win with the wonderful ethics of the State of Colorado.

Until these universities/schools operate like businesses then, tragically, we will have more nuts like Ward…am still waiting for Duke to fire those professors who judged and slandered those innocent boys………….
Not only fire his sorry tuckus but give a refund to all the students that had to take his course and give them credit anyway.
Thanks! We needed some good news!
Churchill’s loony-left politics aside, he’s an academic fabulist, for God’s sake. There’s no way the university can retain him and hope to maintain any measure of academic seriousness. If he’s retained, they’ll have to change their student code of conduct to: “Don’t plagiarize…you know, unless you really need to.”
Can you imagine the first student who’s dismissed or denied a degree due to plagiarism? It’ll be the lawsuit from hell: “You have established a standard that such conduct is acceptable at the highest academic levels of this institution, blah, blah, blah. Therefore, you cannot hold this student to a higher standard than you hold for your tenured faculty.”
Me thinks Churchill is toast, and the fact that he’s an anti-Semitic lunatic is just frosting on his firing cake. He’ll be gone because he’s a disgrace to the minimal standards of scholarship today’s universities adhere to. Those standards are that while you are free to write nonsensical crap no one will ever read or find useful, it has to be your own nonsensical crap, not the nonsensical crap you stole from someone else.
Oh, and I guess today’s university also frowns on fraudulently presenting oneself as a member of an underrepresented and oppressed minority group, when one is, in fact, a fat, aging, white hippie. Old leftist hippies, it seems, can make no such claim to minority status since, sadly, they fill nearly all of the tenured faculty positions in the liberal arts and social sciences at most universities.
See ya, Ward.
Rational Thought: well said. I particularly like your plagiarism statement. That sums it up nicely.
He looks like a caveman so that explains his cranium issues.
He never evolved.
To update Samuel Johnson, academic tenure has replaced patriotism as the last refuge of scoundrels.
He is part Indian, yes? If so, do they stone to death their kin that disgrace the family. Or has he already been castigated?
Whichever it is all I can hope for is that he disappears off the College scene and anywhere else. He is one disgusting human being.
Right on gippergirl. What the Duke profs did was, in my opinion, worse than Churchill’s idiocy.
geminicontender said:

No.
Certainly not Nez Perce.
When his father died in 1871, Joseph was elected to succeed him. He inherited not only a name but a situation made increasingly volatile as white settlers continued to arrive in the Wallowa Valley. Joseph staunchly resisted all efforts to force his band onto the small Idaho reservation, and in 1873 a federal order to remove white settlers and let his people remain in the Wallowa Valley made it appear that he might be successful. But the federal government soon reversed itself, and in 1877 General Oliver Otis Howard threatened a cavalry attack to force Joseph’s band and other hold-outs onto the reservation. Believing military resistance futile, Joseph reluctantly led his people toward Idaho.
Unfortunately, they never got there. About twenty young Nez Perce warriors, enraged at the loss of their homeland, staged a raid on nearby settlements and killed several whites. Immediately, the army began to pursue Joseph’s band and the others who had not moved onto the reservation. Although he had opposed war, Joseph cast his lot with the war leaders.
What followed was one of the most brilliant military retreats in American history. Even the unsympathetic General William Tecumseh Sherman could not help but be impressed with the 1,400 mile march, stating that “the Indians throughout displayed a courage and skill that elicited universal praise. They fought with almost scientific skill, using advance and rear guards, skirmish lines, and field fortifications.”
Of a band of about 700 perhaps 150 were warriors. Encumbered by women, children and household goods, in over three months these 150 out-marched, outmaneuvered, and outfought an aggregate of 2,000 U.S. soldiers and Indian auxiliaries in four major battles and numerous skirmishes trailing to within 50 miles of the Canadian border before yet another military column pinned them down, forcing them finally to give up.
By the time he formally surrendered on October 5, 1877, Joseph was widely referred to in the American press as “the Red Napoleon.” It is unlikely, however, that he played as critical a role in the Nez Perce’s military feat as his legend suggests. He was never considered a war chief by his people, and even within the Wallowa band, it was Joseph’s younger brother, Olikut, who led the warriors, while Joseph was responsible for guarding the camp. It appears, in fact, that Joseph opposed the decision to flee into Montana and seek aid from the Crows and that other chiefs — Looking Glass and some who had been killed before the surrender — were the true strategists of the campaign. Nevertheless, Joseph’s widely reprinted surrender speech has immortalized him as a military leader in American popular culture:
I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohoolhoolzote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say, “Yes” or “No.” He who led the young men [Olikut] is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are — perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever.
Don’t be like Ward Churchill. Credit and link the sources of information you post. Please don’t rip off stuff and cut and paste it in comments without sourcing.
Chief Joseph passage in the above comment comes from here.
I “ripped” nothing off. No one could think that those were my words. Anyone who wants the sources can “google” them for themselves.
How could anyone think that I was trying to pass all that off as my own? It all happened in 1877. Do I look like I am 150 years old?
My mom warned me about getting on someones “bad side”, but then who listens to their mom?
Comments left on an internet blog are not exactly the same as a University professor writing books that should have source credits. Somehow I do not think that those same rigorous academic standards are suppose to apply to comments on blog.
Unless you are offering degrees, of course.
Masters?
PhD?
You are mad at me aren’t you.
This is not the first time you have posted something that was not quoted failed to tell where it came from.
It is just bad manners to not quote and reveal the source.
And never argue with the Boss, you will lose.
And…BUH BYE.
They didn’t mess around, did they?
Nope, short and sweet. Sounded like only two dissenters in the audience as well.
Down goes Churchill! Down goes Churchill!
Can you really get booted off?
What are the reasons ’cause I never want that to happen to me!
What?!? Are you kidding me??? How long has this nonsense been going on??? He should have been fired a looooong time ago.
finally some common sense coming out of boulder, co. maybe i can still retire there when i get older…
See ya, Chutch!
gipper, if he’d been a right winger, he would have been fired the first week.
Seems only the libs get the extended free pass cards.
Who is the nimrod that voted to keep him? How in heaven’s name can their justify their vote? I would love to know that person’s criteria for firing a professor.
My in laws live in Colorado, both Republicans and when I bring this fellow up, they always tell me the samething “Boulder” is like it’s own country, you can’t compare all of Colorado to Boulder. I think they should make a legal precendent case out of this and when he looses his appeal it should be used as a precendent. I don’t think he is the only one, (He is the nail that stuck out so he got hammered- The Fast and the Furious Toyko Drift)
To answer gayle’s question, #38, the answer is “Yes, you can booted off.” And feralcat is now gone.
Once again, I advise commenters to acquaint themselves with the Terms Of Use.
Thanks.
Thanks Michelle.
When you get my age, you forget things quickly!
Who was the person that voted to keep him? I am curious as to their qualifications and credentials.
Ward Churchhill, Leonard Jeffries, Cornel West, etc need to be removed one by one.
Perhaps Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton can lead a protest march and have kids yell, “Education forever, indoctrination never.”
Actually, given the state of education today, the signs would be misspelled.
As Gilda Radner would say, “Never mind.”
The education system is a disaster. Ward Churchhill is a symptom of a much bigger disease. The system is beyond repair and should be (metaphorically) blown up and rebuilt from scratch, with a ban on all political activism in the classroom. This ban must be enforceable.
Until then, home schooling might be the only hope.

Assuming that anyone “should” know who a quote belongs to is not ethical. Everything must be documented.
My old college professor once told us that “There is no original thought,” and that our research papers should be “one long giant footnote.” That is the way to be on the safe side.
I am delivering a two hour ethics lecture to 75 people on Thursday, and this incident plus Ward Churchhill will make for lively discussion.
(with names being redacted for the sake of privacy).

P.S. Keep up the good work Double-M!

Breitbart’s got the Associated Press piece on the firing, but the headline is very misleading.
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8QJ9FFG0&show_article=1&cat=0
Breitbart’s headline reads: “Colorado Prof Fired After 9-11 Remarks”. This is technically correct in that Churchill’s firing took place after he made his remarks. However, this implies a cause and effect. Churchill was fired for plagiarism and falsifying research, not for his 9-11 remarks.
blacktygrrrr (Eric),
Good luck on the lecture.
MM did the right thing, just like the University of Colorado’s Board of Regents finally did.
There is some irony of getting booted for similar reasons from a blog dedicated to Churchill getting fired for plagiarism and such.
Anybody else wondering why the vote wasn’t unanimous?
How is there someone on the CU Board of Regents who wanted Churchill to stay?
‘Bout time he got fired. Scum.
Does anyone believe that Churchill would be lecturing to a few fruit flies sitting on his backyard picket fence right now if it had not been for the likes of Michelle, and particularly Bill O’Reilly’s crusade against him?
On another thread I find myself mixing it up rather strongly on the issue that I feel we need to take grassroots action to try to put pressure on the Dems to debate on Fox, the only high-profile venue where tough questions will be asked of Dems - and answers demanded - a matter of absolute critical importance in a fair democracy. Several people on that thread have told me that outrage and the likes of O’Reilly cannot make a difference. This is a perfect example of why commentators and commoners alike can make a difference: Churchill, a radical leftist in a state which embraces radical leftist ideals like a blue blanket, in an institution within that state which represents the leftest of the left, and once the darling of the place, finds himself dropped like a hot potato once the sweat starts to form on the brows of his superiors. These things do make a difference. A huge difference.
So Goodbye Ward Churchill. I agree that you’ll be back, but like most movie monster sequels, hopefully in a dilluted and less effective form. You’ve had enough of a negative impact on young minds already to replace a thousand graphically violent movies.
Actually I am surprised that there was enough support on the board to fire him.
After all they let him stay until the nation was focused on him.
Doing the right thing onl when the spotlight is on you is called survival and maybe a little cowardly.
Mr_Conservative_Cat,
Would you direct me to that other thread,
on the subject of the demoncrats not debating on FN.
I have been perplexed why the repubs would go anywhere near their lair (CNN-MSNBC) if they will not come to ours.
What a joke the debates have been so far, it is hard to believe.
Get MM involved, maybe we can do something.
Your patience is unbelievable! MikeB has been bashing you since I have been registered. I am so impressed that you don’t pop your cork now and again and use your boot button more often. I will never do anything to lose my privilege – I waited too long to get it!
On topic: I am shocked – SHOCKED mind you that the liberals who frequent this site are not just outraged about this. As for the one vote for him, there is one in every crowd – unfortunately.
I hear the Iraqi Higher Learning Orgs.are looking for professers.
The wheels of Justice do indeed turn slowly. It’s a good thing the “former” professor has been sacked. Hopefully, others in his “business” will take note and learn to fly straight. Stick to teaching the topic at hand, leave the pontificating to some other venue.
Chickens came home to roost.
Regarding Boulder: most of us in other parts of CO, with a possible exception of Denver, since its so close (in more ways than just geography…) usually refer to it as “the People’s Republic of Boulder”. The wife of a close friend who had to spend some long hours there getting her Masters refers to Boulder as “25 square miles surrounded by reality”. Boulder is its own world…
Bye Ward. Don’t let the door hit you in the butt on your way out. Sad individual, indeed. Too bad. Maybe if he gets his “marbles” reformatted, he might be an OK guy…

Dersu,
At last, someone who thinks pro-actively. The thread has already been archived, so you’ll have to go to “Archives” and then the thread is called CNN/U-Tube debate
You’ll be stunned and dumbfounded at some of the astonishingly pessimistic posts there. Also, troublingly, I’ve either been edited or censored - my last post (at least the last) is missing from the thread (or maybe a hacker “protecting” the Dems got in - who knows?), giving the last word to a highly defensive fellow with whom I feel certain you’ll disagree.
Anyway, your voice is needed in that thread, and we should discuss this off the board also, somehow, via chat, and see what we can brainstorm into action.
The degree of the imbalance in the political playing field is just insane at this point - and too much to be tolerated.
Well the University of Hawaii will probably put out the Welcome Mat for old Ward. He was out there about 2 years or so ago and they gave him a warm Aloha. Funny thing though, they didn’t want to let the press (which is pretty liberal anyway out there) into the forum. He was standing outside and one of the local reporters, Denby Fawcett asked him about his “Indian Heritage”. He and the gaggle at UH made some incoherent statements and then stomped off like the three year olds they really are.
Yes, he’s entittled to be as stupid as he wants to be in saying hurtful things but he’s not exactly an academic wiz kid. I thought I read that he did not have a Ph D and that his Masters was somewhat suspect too.
Dursu,
Update: It seems that I have been blocked from posting further on that thread but that thread only, either by someone with the keys to the house or a hacker, leaving the last word to a ranter. Lovely - there’s free discussion for you - at least, that’s the way it feels with no explaination. Fits right in with the “don’t make waves about the Dems not debating on Fox” that seems to be the prevailing mindset on that thread. I’m guessing you shouldn’t be surprised if I am vanquished from this board in the future. Anyway, Dersu, contact me if you can.
Test. I must not have submitted my comments earlier or for some reason they did not go through.

Now that they’ve kicked out the correct Churchill from academia, they need to reinstate Winston Churchill.
Great one! It’s a treasure trove portal to all that matters about Ward Churchill; he is total garbage.
Ward Churchill wasn’t fired for his insane moonbat 9/11 comment. This only put the spotlight on him and people had to investigate, and some extreme things were found which warranted his sacking. Ward Churchill is a fraud, and his upcoming lawsuit against his former employer should serve to educate even more of the public about his insanity and rampant lies and fakery.
