Harry Reid eats crow on border security funding: “I was wrong and Senator Cornyn was right”
First, watch this as Harry Reid eats crow (hat tip: Senate tipster):
After Reid and the Dems tangled with the GOP last night, the Senate just passed a good border security funding amendment today, 89-1.
The goat who voted against it? Babbling George Voinovich.
The Corner has some back story. Yeah, Lindsay Grahamnesty was involved, but the movers and shakers were solid enforcement-first senators like John Cornyn.
Oh, and if Grahamnesty think this rectifies all his smearing of grass-roots conservatives as bigots, he’s delusional.
Here’s the roll (check out the fence-sitters, too):
The amendment summary, via BP:
“There is hereby appropriated $3,000,000,000 to satisfy the requirements set out in section 1002(a) and, if any amount remains after satisfying such requirements, to achieve and maintain operational control over the international land and maritime borders of the United States, for employment eligibility verification improvements, for increased removal and detention of visa overstays, criminal aliens, aliens who have illegally reentered the United States, and for reimbursement of State and local section 287(g) expenses. These amounts are designated as an emergency requirement pursuant to section 204 of S. Con. Res. 21 (110th Congress).”
More:
The amendment would provide emergency funding of $3 billion for:
· Hiring 500 more Customs & Border Protection (CBP) officers per year (FY08-12), 1200 more Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents per year, 200 investigators to combat aliens smuggling, 50 Deputy U.S. Marshals;
· 23,000 Border Patrol agents hired, trained, and reporting for duty;
· 4 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles & 105 ground-based radar and camera towers;
· 300 miles of vehicle barriers & 700 miles of border fencing;
· A permanent end to the “catch-and-release” policy with 45,000 detention beds;
· Operational control over 100% of the U.S.-Mexico land border;
· To allow DHS to present a photo electronically to an employer so that the employer may confirm the identity of the individual when he presents ID;
· To require mandatory detention of aliens who overstay their visa by 60 days;
· To increase penalties for illegal entrants who are criminals of those who reentered after a deportation; and
· To reimburse local governments who choose to cooperation with ICE in enforcing the immigration laws (INA 287g).
287g is a focus of Deport Them Now.
From Cornyn’s office:
In an overwhelming vote, the U.S. Senate today passed an amendment offered by Senate Republicans to the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill which would provide $3 billion in emergency funding for border security. Importantly, the amendment also includes a provision drafted by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn to allow this money to be used for enforcing America’s immigration laws, including electronic employment verification improvements and the increased removal and detention of visa overstays.
Sen. Cornyn, the top Republican on the Immigration, Border Security and Refugees subcommittee, said, “Addressing the problem of illegal immigration shouldn’t stop at our borders. We need to restore the confidence of the American people that the federal government is committed to enforcing our immigration laws. This funding will not only put more boots on the ground at our borders but it will also provide additional resources for law enforcement to remove dangerous felons who are here illegally. This is an important, bipartisan step forward to strengthening America’s security. I’m pleased my colleagues in both parties agreed to this important amendment.”
It’s a start.

Is Obama ever going to vote on anything again?
Harry Reid is such a freaking four year old.
Its amazing to see the discrepancy between this and Shamnesty.
And seriously, Obama refuses to vote on anything. What a leader!
Switchback, McCain, and Obama didn’t vote…
Obama: Serving the state of Illinois by doing absolutely nothing!
If you don’t vote, they can’t hold you accountable for anything. A very typical Chicago position, I might add.
What the hell is Voinovich’s problem? Afraid of pissing off the Ohio illegal labor market on what is essentially a unanimous vote?
I can;t wait to see the “Gotcha” in this bill…
Obama makes me want to vomit on myself.
That’s my Senator! Go get em Cornyn!
I see Brownback is maintaining his reputation that he is useless as tits on a bull.
Another case of illegal aliens doing the job Americans won’t. Statutory rape, etc.

Nothing new here; typical demo response.
Not the first time, not the last. What is surprising here is that he would acknowledge anything of the sort. Must have finally realized that he was on the wrong side of a truely bipartisan issue. Now if only Bush would do the same.
Cornyn… our front-runner for 2012, it seems…
Coleman did not vote because he left town to be with his ailing father. Prayers and thoughts with the Senator and his family.
Great get on the audio. I’m sure I won’t hear it anywhere else. Thanks MM
I don’t think Harry has a good grasp on what thoughts he has should be made public and which ones he should just shut up about. He really needs a handler/advisor but it is more entertaining for us without one.
LC,
Ewwww…. but, if I have to look at one more picture of “Tommy” Reid, I might do the same.
Great news … now if they’ll just spend it properly … as they say … the proof is in the pudding … waiting to see the details of the bill and how it will be be done …
Thanks MM … you’re the best …
Did the polls on their ‘Grand Compromise’ finally reach the offices of dear Harry Reid?
See, that’s why you should make sure your courier service only hires legal workers…
Not if my registration depended on it! LOL
89-1 in DC? I would have expected to see that kind of number on their pay raise only. Just that alone is a nice and refreshing. Now, you guys get back to wanting to win this war and we will all have something to cheer about!
Kennedy voted Yea, that’s very scary on an enforcement bill.
Has this bill been torn apart and analyzed?
On-my-soap-box
This will be one time that “Land Deed Reid” made the wrong investment … the one for defeat …
Perhaps the do-nothing Congress has finally realized that having only HALF the approval numbers of an embattled republican president does not give them much room to criticize much less provide a winning platform for a democratic candidate. Hillary seems to get that and is voting lately with republicans, Obama, however, seems to be in a voting quagmire!
There is a double secret provision written in that insures he will not have to give up his illegal immigrant maids and yardmen.
Laree in Texas to Harry Reid in Where do you come from anyway? DUH!!
No matter. If he turned into a true conservative and voted with the conservative Republicans on every issue – I just can’t bring myself to watch him eating crow. He will just spin it later as a misquote and I will just hate myself for polluting yet another portion of my brain.
How soon til Hillary starts attacking Obama’s No-Vote record?
On another note - ok, I’m admitting I don’t get it….
What’s with the “Tommy” Reid references?
I keep seeing it but must have missed something somewhere.
I thought the Chicago position was that you’ll have time to vote when you’re dead.
The fact that Cornyn continues to surreptitiously offer foreign worker importation provisions is more of a story to me than Reid’s flip-flopping (that’s a given, it seems). For example, on this very DHS approps bill, Cornyn’s sponsoring an amendment (SA 2428) which, if adopted (seems unlikely given yesterday’s brouhaha over legislating in an appropriations bill), would allow the “recapturing” of “unused” employment-based visas from fiscal years 1994, 1996, 1997, and 1998 (even though visas not allocated in a certain category in any given year are made available for other categories, so there really is no such thing as an “unused” visa). It also would raise the H-1B “high-skill” visa cap from 65,000 per year to 115,000 per year.
Cornyn needs to be brought to task for bait-and-switch moves like this: say you’re for border security and against amnesty one moment and then offer job giveaways the next.
Is it against Obama Hussein’s “religion” to vote?
Do Muslims vote???
As an Ohioan, I am so ashamed of george voinovich. I have voted for the man every time his name’s been on my ballot, but no more. If it takes having both our Senators being Democrats, maybe then the Ohio GOP will start running conservatives again.
George Voinovich is a disgrace
Chuck, I call his office everyday, along with your fellow constituents!!
jrlingreenbay
When Reid gets on one of his longwinded dissertations he invariably tells some “story” about his friend “Tommy” who overcame some obstacle or something … that’s the reference that has come to be known as a “Tommy” Reid story …
I would call his office….geesh!
Makes my day, but the job is not complete.
We still have too:
1) Deal with the illegals already here, without disrupting commerence.
2) Continue the war on terror
3) Kill the dimmies railroad (Nifong, Fitzgerld)
4) Challange this Global meltdown porpaganda (remember global freezing in the 40’s thru 70’s) We must DEMAND proof!!
And we must address many other problems as well! This is not the time lie down and sleep!! Lets keep the phones and e mails smoking.
#30 - don’t forget the seventeen hundred plus earmarks being plugged into our latest Defense bill. 1776 to be exact.
(15 in fact for Pelosi - attention being brought to her specifically because I am from SF bay area and…she bugs me.)
allrsn
as for #4 … didn’t you hear the reason that we are not getting all those hurricanes they were predicting not long ago …
the Gulf Water is too cold to let a storm build up that kind of strength … Global Warming my A^^
jrl,
Heres’ the link for “tommy”
CAUTION!!
Brace yourself for full blown laughter.
http://hotair.com/archives/2007/06/29/audio-wheres-tommy/
I dont know if some poilitcal pressure somewhere got to Sen Reid, or if a hammer fell out of a workshed cupboard and knocked some temporary sense into him, but this knuckledragging libertarian pajamahadeen gives him a modicum of credit for his statement.
the idea of a Nancy Pelosi or Dick Durbin, or the Senator from Chappaquiddick or the Senator from France by way of Cambodia ever admitting on the floors of Congress that they acted like a petulant nutball on a matter of national import is unconscionable.
none of those august members would….or even could…say something like that.
of course we will continue to hold Reid’s hooves to the fire, but in this case, he deserves polite golf claps for manning up and copping to the charge of tardism under fire, if only once and only for awhile.
we now return you to Gunsmoke.
ajmontana
thanks for that … I didn’t have a link for jrl …
if you notice that lately, Obama has not been voting. this way you can’t pin him down for his voting record. but, wasn’t that the reason he came to washington? to participate? this may back fire on him far worse than the backfire of standing for something…
well, more work needs to be done…for sure..but this is a beginning.
#30 The answer no one wants to hear “Attrition” Rep Tancredo, use this word this is why he is ostersized by Bush.
If Jobs are drawing people to enter the country illegally, take the Jobs away.
If you have Ants at your picnic, take the sugar off the table, the Ants go away.
I am happy to see that Obama is not doing his elected job.
Great for the Conservatives!
Not to mention Hillary, but then how would she consider him on her ticket with his history of nothingness?
feebiebabe,
I saw a story a couple of day’s ago here in so.cal. and the name of this creature fit’s Pelosi perfectly.
“Dosidicus Gigas”
I mentioned that several days ago uhangtight. I plan on making SURE thiscomes to the attention of people in illinois, should Obama bother to run for another Senate term.
when will Brownback just withdraw from the race? He’s making Ron Paul and Tommy Thompson look like legitimate candidates!
Thanks for the info. I had no idea what everyone was referring to….lol.
I’ll check the link at home - I can’t view anything on HotAir due to the filters here at work…. grrrrrrrrrr.
I’m sure it will be amusing.
Osama just called. He said, ” I am not a Muslim. A Jihad on you!”
Would this vote suggest, that the overall Homeland Security bill is veto proof? This is a near perfect fit for a security bill, however I smell amnesty brewing in a backroom.
All reasonable people eat Crow sometime, else wise they would not have learned to be reasonable.
However in Reid’s case is it honesty or imputes, only his dermatologist knows for sure.
Ease up on Harry. The alloy plate in his head interfaces with his tin foil hat and the copper tip on his “dowser”.
His retirement villa awaits. Vote his monkey butt outta there!
Image: Bear1909 with jaws clamped snuggly around Harry’s noggin and whippin him awound wike a wag daw.
He needs to take Obama the lhama with him as well.
I personally think it shows some strength of character that Reid can acknowledge his own childish behavior and publicly “eat crow”. I actually have some respect for the guy now.
As for Obama not voting - Brownback and McCain didn’t vote either. Perhaps they were distracted by something. Like, oh I don’t know, campaigning for the ‘08 election?
Have a lot of sway with the people of Illinois, do you? I’m sure they’re awaiting your commentary with bated breath.
I’m starting to think that Obama wants to make sure nobody figures out for sure what his stance is on anything.
Hey, he’s claimed to be of pretty much every race, every religion, and even both genders—just kidding on the last one (or am I?)
—so why can’t he go on to claim he’s a liberal and a conservative? It’s not like his voting record will contradict such a claim!
Barack Obama: Everybody’s Candidate
I think it’s a ruse to try to pass another shamnesty bill. I think that’s part of the reason Grahamnesty is still on Mrs. Malkin’s Ka-Ka list.
Immigration is the number one issue in this country and it has finally started to effect even “Land Deed Reed”.
The MSM will probably refuse to cover any of this or will start showing more sob stories from La Raza and Maldef
Geraldo will more than likely call this a right winged Nazi Bill.
Hoorahh!
I’ll believe that when I see it.
DATES. I WANNA SEE DATES. When ? WHEN? When will this be DONE? FINISHED?
b.Hussein Obama= no vote. We do not need spinelessness in the senate, or ANY office.
B.Hussein should be ‘done’ with this wimpout, but libs like that limpy sh*t.
Just seconding what others here have said or inferred:
“to allow this money to be used for enforcing America’s immigration laws, including electronic employment verification improvements and the increased removal and detention of visa overstays. “
That’s the meat of the thing, because the fence or anything of that sort will be imperfect. Will they actually send anyone back? We’re finally on the right track if they do, though I wouldn’t imagine it would stand for 2 minutes if the Hillary-Monster winds up sitting in the big chair.
Additionally, also like some others, I cannot believe that Reid caved to the point of an apology without a larger objective in mind. He just doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who loses graciously for the sake of the country. One cannot help but wonder what he has up his sleeve re this for ‘08. Yes, we need to be vigilant and on the lookout for suspicious troublemakers, and unfortunately, in a different way, that includes Reid.
“It’s a start”
Cross your fingers.
I think the Dems feel so positive that they are going to stay in Power in Congress and win the White House that they will pass some laws to delude people into thinking they are being bi-partisan with the intent of repealing all of them once they are in total power at both the Legislative and Executive branches …
Mr. President, build up this fence!
Actually most of this stuff is just ruse for rubes.
It’s jobs and jackpot babies that bring illegals in, so the only way to keep them out is to go after employers and the jackpot baby program. I believe the United States is the only country in the world that still has a jackpot baby program.

First point-Reid…. this is the man who just the other day said, as Senate Majority Leader in a time of war, George Bush is the worst President our Country has ever seen. I have no respect for any politician who makes that remark during these times. Disagree politically? Fine. Denegrate the commander in chief during war personally? No way..
As for Obama - he’s missed a lot of votes lately. The impression seems to be growing that he doesn’t want his opinion known one way or the other on the most important issues - or maybe he just doesn’t want to be categorized down the road as having ‘voted for it, before he voted against it’.
What? McCain didn’t vote?
I’m shocked!!!!!
!
I think Harry ought to eat something else,in addition to crow.See if you can figure out what I’m referring to.
I was skeptical when I first saw Grahamnesty talking about what a great bill this was last night. Now I see that it past 89-1 and the Scarry Screed is eating crow. Sorry, somethin’ just ain’t right. I thought April fools day was only in April.
I smell a rat. The dems were too eager to vote for this. Wonder if any backroom deals were cut on Durbin’s DREAM ACT and Feinsteins Ag Worker Bill?
Heartland Perspective
That’s the same thing I was referencing in #56 … it was too easy …
Again, I apologize for Voinovich.
Hey Ohioans, how about a draft John Boehner for Voinovich’s seat? If we don’t do something, we’ll have two Democrat Senators next time.
1776 - THAT’s a chilling irony!
You are talking about the crowd that would have believed:
1. The world was flat because that is what science said.
2. That the universe revolved around us, because that is what science said.
3. That your relatives 3 million years ago were apes because that is what science says.
4. Living things could evolve from dead i.e. flies just sprung from meat left to its own, because that is what science said.
The shy is falling, the sky is falling! “The scientific consensus” is in agreement, the planet is melting. 30 years from now we will be in a new ice age and I will be responsible for it! What other proof do you need – blame me! Shoot, they blame me for GW now because I use incandescent lights. Oh, and I pass gas too.
It is a start. I really am amazed this bill passed. Now, lets see if any of it gets enforced
