Anti-war dance and slash

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 31, 2007 12:01 AM

sytycd.jpg Item number one: Fortunately, I missed last week’s episode of the Fox network show, “So, You Think You Can Dance?” If I had seen it, I might have damaged my TV set. According to Newsbusters, the show featured a dance judge wearing Marine Dress Blues with upside-down Marine emblems on the sleeves and anti-war dances by the contestants. Video at Weblogging. The moonbat judge had absolutely no idea–no, none at all–that wearing Marine insignias upside-down would offend anyone. TV Guide:

Emmy-nominated choreographer Mia Michaels thought she was going to have a wonderful day. She woke up this morning to find hundreds of messages posted on her website. “And I thought, wow, I must’ve been a really good judge last night,” says Michaels. But then she opened the messages and was shocked by their tone and content. “It was hate mail,” she says simply. “Saying things like, ‘You should be ashamed of yourself.’ It was really intense. It was awful.”

The writers were responding to a jacket worn by Michaels on Wednesday’s show. She had no idea that anyone would be offended by it, she says. She simply thought she was being fashionable by wearing a navy blue military jacket that happened to have a Marine emblem, upside down, on the sleeves. After hearing the feedback, Michaels tried to make amends on the air. “I understand why people were upset and I respect that,” she says. “That symbol is sacred to the Marines, it’s what they earned. The problem needed to be addressed and I’m glad we addressed it. That’s why I made a public apology.”

But the problem didn’t stop with her. Adding to the perfect storm of controversy on Wednesday night’s show was Dance’s other Emmy-nominated choreographer, Wade Robson. He had fashioned the 10 identical solo dances around an antiwar theme. Set to the music of John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change,” the dancers wore peace symbols and printed slogans.

Lt. Col. Patrick, a milblogger at Duty in the Desert, responds [9:03pm Eastern 7/31 CORRECTION - he's quoting Webloggin's Terry Trippany here]:

I accept the fact that perhaps Michaels’ didn’t realize how strongly people would feel about the issue but this goes beyond a simple upside down emblem. The dress blues themselves are sacred to the men and women who have earned the right to wear them. Military personnel follow strict guidelines pertaining to dress codes. Even more importantly, fallen Marines are often buried in their dress blues. The uniform is important to the families and members of the U.S. military and it should be respected.

The fact that Mia Michaels wore the blouse (not jacket) with an upside down Marine emblem on the same night that Wade Robson choreographed an anti-war dance solo is not some mere coincidence in my estimation.

Robeson has a blubbering statement on his website about his anti-war pieces non-apologizing:

“This was a cry for peace and nothing more.

In the video package they had a clip of Wade Robson saying that this was “antiwar.” We want to make sure that it is clear that Wade’s statement was in no way meant to be disrespectful to our men and women in the military, putting their lives on the line everyday for a lot of us. Wade and Amanda strongly believe that the selfless sacrifices of every one of the military’s men and women are incomprehensibly courageous.

If Wade’s statement did offend anybody in any way, we sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding.

All we were trying to say in this piece is that we don’t want anymore innocent lives to be lost on either side.

That being said, this statement is not an apology in any way for the number and its message. It is a clarification of its intention.

Peace & Love.”

Yours truly,
Wade & Amanda Robson.

To paraphrase Laura Ingraham: Shut up and dance.

Item number two: Via Ace comes news of this anti-war nutball in the Pacific Northwest

A college student was arrested Sunday in the slashing of 42 tires on 13 government vehicles in an Army recruiting office parking lot, saying he was angry about the war in Iraq, authorities said.

Following a number of calls about a man wearing black and slashing tires, two deputies stopped a 19-year-old college student from Colorado as he tried to run from the lot shortly after midnight Sunday, a Kitsap County sheriff’s office report said.

The man put up his hands, dropped a knife and, after being made to lie on the ground and being read his rights, asked, “Is this the time where I can confess?” deputies wrote.

On a portable breath test, his blood alcohol level registered .168, more than twice the legal threshold for intoxication, according to the report.

He told deputies he decided to slash the tires of Army recruiting vehicles because he “hated the military and the government and the war we were in.”

He’ll get a slap on the wrist, and despite his confession of hate, bigotry, and threatened violence against a specific group, he of course won’t be charged with a hate crime.

Now, if he had slashed 42 Korans

    That’s hate speech?

It just goes to show you how dangerous hate speech laws are. I’m so glad that Michelle spoke about how utterly counter-constitutional hate speech laws on O’Reilly tonight. First amendment anyone?

“You should be ashamed” becomes hate speech, becomes a crime.

That’s a heck of a wardrobe malfunction, lady. Being told ’shame on you’ is really awful? She hasn’t been to the Daily Kos or MoveOndotorg, has she? Clueless celebrity? Gormless twit? Maybe.

Most television shows have advisors and
if she wore it as a costume rather than her personal wardrobe choice someone had to alter the uniform so it would not appear as if she was wearing the rank or emblem correctly. Putting it upside down is one way to show it is
‘out of service’ as it were; but still showing the connection to the armed forces.

I can’t believe she wore it as a costume and wasn’t told that, or bought it as a coat and was told the reason for the upside down emblem was to show she was not a servicemember or entitled to wear it properly.

If you watch “A Few Good Men,” Kevin Bacon’s Marine captain’s uniform has about three pairs of captain’s bars, and the uniforms the actors are wearing are subtlely ‘rearranged.’

    I go for gormless.

    Yeah, pretty much, wolfpangloss.

The liberals’ definition of “hate speech” is anything they disagree with - telling them to feel ashamed is an affront to their self-esteem and belief that they should be able to do whatever, whenever, and with whomever they please.

I think someone should write to her and say it’s okay for her to insult our troops - but to remember they’re the only ones keeping her from being shrouded in a burqua, and keeping dancing from being outlawed under shari’a law.

I think we need to start a campaign that rounds up people like this, puts them on a plane to the Middle East, and makes them live in a Muslim nation - a STRICT Muslim nation - for two months. Then watch these ingrates come back and kiss American soil.

Please define “peace”. Is it when no one’s shooting anyone and nobody ever gets hurt so everyone’s happy and dancing the maypole because of that? My dear misguided woman, Peace is NOT a state of non-war or bliss from bullets. One of the most moving times in my life was visiting friends in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn in the mid-70’s when suddenly this little supermarket had a rush of people toward it, like there was some accident, and we thought there was because this elderly woman had fallen to her knees hysterically sobbing. Relatives were comforting her, told everyone that everything was alright, that she just came from Estonia and never saw so much food in one place before. Folks, this was no Pathmark or Safeway, this was just an average corner supermarket. As bad as the food lines and crisis was over in Estonia, the paranoia was even worst, they interpreted. If a policeman ever knocked on your door you instantly thought it was the end of the line, not a traffic ticket. They said had Estonians the arms they would’ve tried to overthrow the Soviets then and there and gotten the misery and terror over with, whatever the price — and they paid a terrible one for over thirty years for their “peace”. Americans are far too isolated and “soft” to appreciate this. There are sometimes life circumstances worst than war, believe it or not, I’m afraid. That’s why I so fear for the well-being of those enlightened and westernized women and girls in Iraq and Afghanistan if those if the style of “peace” of the Taliban and religious fanatics and other murderous zealously-macho bigots win over there.

I turned the show off after a couple of dancers and didn’t even bother to watch the elimination show the following night. Oh what a wonderful world it would be if all it took to protect ourselves and our country was love, harmony, and giving Osama a great big bear hug. Someone should really tell this to the thugs who are threatening to murder all those South Korean Christians for the crime of daring to help their fellow man in Afghanistan. You need to align your perspective better.

This veteran is a little more than upset over these deliberate insults to our troops. I expect it from the malcontent America haters in Hollywood. The college kid from Colorado owes the US Government approximately $1,470.00 (42 tires at $35.00 each) in property damages he caused. It really begins to add up when you look at lost time due to inoperable vehicles allowing recruiters to follow-up leads of willing volunteers. I guarantee the Army recruiting station does not have the funding in their austere annual Budget to cover this act of vandalism. A proper punishment for this young man would be to pay for the tires and be required to wash and wax each vehicle in the Army Recruiting Stations vehicle fleet. While wearing a T-Shirt, “I destroyed Government property wasting thousands of your tax dollars.” A little humility can be a good thing and the kid just might learn something about responsibility for his actions. I know wishful thinking. I put up with being spit on in the 70s, but this behavior from our protected class of citizens not forced to serve in the Military by a draft is appalling. They do not support the troops and should come out and say so.

I’d love to see a choreographed piece where the women throw off hajib and the men tear off shirts bearing an image of a mullah with a cirle and slash over it. Now that would get ratings!

Yeah, that seems appropriate. Maybe toss in a fine for drunk and disorderly and a couple years of probation.

But ‘hate crime’? Might as well charge me with a hate crime, because I procrastinated on paying my community college parking ticket as a result for my very strong contempt for the campus police there.

The college kid from Colorado owes the US Government approximately $1,470.00 (42 tires at $35.00 each) in property damages he caused. It really begins to add up when you look at lost time due to inoperable vehicles allowing recruiters to follow-up leads of willing volunteers.

How about having him do some time where he might have to have lunch with vets or take long walks in the yard with them? He could go into detail about what he meant by slashing the tires and saying who he would kill if he was in Iraq.

It would be very educational for the school boy.

The tire slasher should pay restitution and replace the tires he slashed. Then he should be sentenced to 12 months emptying the bedpans of our wounded troops at Walter Reed.

Further, as a convicted felon (the damages qualify), his student financial aid should be revoked and his existingl loans called in. And he should be expelled from college as well.

And everytime he applies for a job he can explain to his potential employer that he was conficted of a felony and what that felony was.

I think any Marine would totally agree with that thinking … as well as the following Marine Corps Rules of Engagement …

    US Marine Corps Rules:

    1. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

    2. Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.

    3. Have a plan.

    4. Have a back-up plan, because the first one probably won’t work.

    5. Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

    6. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with at least a “4.”

    7. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.

    8. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal preferred.)

    9. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

    10. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

    11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

    12. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

    13. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating your intention to shoot.

More of that approach and less “dancing for peace” and we can take Al-Qaeda out once and for all …

I would add a couple personal favorites.

    - There is no overkill. There is only “open fire” and “I need to reload”.

    - If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.

And for Boomer - so only $1,470.00?

I think it’s probably more than that. I would guess it would be over $1,500…

In which case… Class B Felony.
